Chương 5

"Who?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Your husband."
The answer felt impossible even though everyone already knew the truth was painful.
Eleanor shook her head.
"You said he was gone."
"He is."
"Then why are you still protecting him?"
Daniel looked down.
"Because I was afraid to accept that the man I admired was not the man I thought he was."
Eleanor stared at her son.
For a moment, she saw the little boy she had raised.
The child who used to follow his father around the house.
The child who believed every word his father said.
She realized Daniel had not only inherited his father's name.
He had inherited his father's silence.
"Show me the message."
Daniel slowly unlocked the phone again.
His fingers moved carefully across the screen.
He opened the final conversation.
The last message from Rebecca appeared.
Eleanor took the phone.
She read silently.
Her face changed after the first line.
Clara watched as the older woman's confidence disappeared completely.
"What does it say?" Clara asked.
Eleanor did not answer.
She continued reading.
Then she whispered.
"She knew."
Daniel looked at her.
"Yes."
"She knew everything."
Her voice became quieter.
"She knew my husband was hiding Noah."
Daniel nodded.
Eleanor looked at the phone again.
"She knew he was afraid of me finding out."
Nobody spoke.
The ballroom remained frozen.
Then Eleanor reached the final sentence.
Her hand moved toward her mouth.
"What?"
Daniel stepped closer.
"Mother?"
She looked at him with tears forming in her eyes.
"She wrote that she tried to come to me."
Daniel's face fell.
"When?"
"The night she disappeared."
Clara looked at Daniel.
"What happened that night?"
Daniel did not answer.
Eleanor turned toward him.
"What happened?"
Daniel looked like he had been carrying this moment his entire life.
"I don't know everything."
"Then tell me what you know."
Daniel took a deep breath.
"Rebecca came to the house."
Eleanor looked confused.
"My house?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because she wanted to tell you the truth herself."
The older woman closed her eyes.
She imagined the scene she had never known.
A woman standing outside her home with the truth in her hands.
A daughter she never knew existed.
A child who needed protection.
And she had never opened the door.
"What happened?"
Daniel looked away.
"My father found out she was coming."
Eleanor's eyes opened.
"And?"
"He stopped her."
Clara stepped forward.
"How?"
Daniel hesitated.
"He threatened to take Noah away."
Clara looked down at the boy.
Noah was still standing close to her, listening to words he did not fully understand.
Eleanor noticed.
She immediately lowered her voice.
"Not another word about this in front of him."
Daniel nodded.
But Noah spoke before anyone could move.
"I want to know."
Everyone looked at him.
The little boy's voice was soft.
But there was a strength in it that surprised them.
"I keep hearing people say things about me."
He looked at Eleanor.
"I want to know why."
Clara knelt beside him.
"Noah..."
"I am scared."
His honesty broke through every wall in the room.
"But I am more scared when nobody tells me anything."
Eleanor looked at him.
She understood that feeling better than anyone.
She had spent years living inside a beautiful lie because nobody thought she could handle the truth.
She reached for his hand again.
"Then you deserve the truth."
Daniel looked uncertain.
Eleanor turned to him.
"Tell us."
Daniel nodded.
"Rebecca came to the house that night because she wanted to explain everything."
He looked at Noah.
"She wanted to make sure you were safe."
Noah listened carefully.
"But my father stopped her."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Daniel's face filled with regret.
"Because he believed the truth would destroy his life."
Eleanor looked away.
She finally understood.
Her husband had not been protecting their family.
He had been protecting himself.
"What happened after that?"
Daniel looked at the floor.
"My father told me to handle it."
Eleanor froze.
"Handle it?"
Daniel nodded.
"He told me to convince Rebecca to leave."
Clara's expression hardened.
"And you did?"
Daniel looked ashamed.
"I tried."
The answer was painful.
"But she refused."
"What did she say?"
Daniel looked toward the phone.
"She said Noah was not a problem to hide."
He paused.
"She said he was a person who deserved to know where he came from."
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
The words sounded like something she wished she had understood years earlier.
"What happened to her?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I don't know."
"You said she disappeared."
"Yes."
"After you spoke to her?"
Daniel nodded.
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Clara stared at him.
"Daniel."
He looked at her.
"What are you not saying?"
Daniel's face tightened.
"I found her car the next morning."
Eleanor went still.
"Where?"
"Near the old Whitmore property."
The old property.
A place that had been abandoned for years.
A place nobody in the family discussed.
"Was she inside?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"Then what?"
Daniel looked toward Noah.
"Her bag was there."
Clara's eyes widened.
"Her bag?"
"With documents."
"What documents?"
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
"Documents proving Noah's identity."
The older woman understood immediately.
"She wanted me to find them."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
Eleanor looked down at Noah.
The child who had spent his entire life without answers.
The child who should have been welcomed into the family from the beginning.
Instead, he had been hidden because powerful adults were afraid of consequences.
She turned back to Daniel.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"Because when I found the documents, my father was still alive."
Eleanor stared at him.
"And after he died?"
Daniel looked away.
"After he died, I had spent so many years lying that telling the truth felt impossible."
Clara shook her head.
"That is not a reason."
"I know."
"No."
Her voice became stronger.
"You need to understand this."
She looked at Noah.
"Every year he wondered why he felt different."
May you like
Daniel lowered his head.
"Every year I knew why."
