Chương 2

The confusion on his face was worse than before.

He was old enough to understand that people were hiding things from him.

He was not old enough to understand why.

Eleanor watched him carefully.

The anger she had carried into the ballroom began to break apart.

She remembered holding Daniel as a baby.

She remembered promising her husband that she would always protect their family.

She remembered every sacrifice she had made to keep the Whitmore name respected.

And now she wondered if protecting a name had caused her to forget protecting people.

She slowly walked closer.

Clara immediately became tense.

But Eleanor stopped several feet away.

"I owe you an apology," Eleanor said.

The entire room went silent.

Noah blinked.

"Me?"

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes, you."

Her voice trembled.

"I looked at you and saw a secret."

She took a breath.

"But I should have seen a child who was scared."

Noah did not know what to say.

Children were not prepared for adults to admit they were wrong.

Clara reached down and squeezed his hand gently.

Eleanor looked at Clara next.

"I was angry because I believed someone stole my family from me."

Clara held her gaze.

"And I was angry because someone forgot that he was part of the family."

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

They stood surrounded by flowers, wedding decorations, and people who had come to celebrate love.

Yet the most important thing happening in the room was not a wedding.

It was the beginning of the truth.

Eleanor looked back at the red smartphone.

"There is still something you all need to know."

Daniel's face changed immediately.

The fear returned.

Clara noticed.

"What is it?"

Eleanor stared at the screen.

Her expression became serious again.

"This phone does not only reveal what happened to Noah."

She paused.

"It reveals who started it."

The ballroom became completely silent.

Noah looked up at Clara.

Clara looked at Eleanor.

And Daniel looked like a man who had just realized the past he buried was finally coming back for him.

Daniel looked like a man who had just realized the past he buried was finally coming back for him.

Eleanor stared at him for several seconds, searching his face for the son she thought she knew.

The confident businessman who had stood beside her at countless charity events was gone.

In his place was a frightened man carrying a secret that had grown too heavy to hide.

"What did you do, Daniel?" Eleanor asked.

Her voice was not angry anymore.

It was worse.

It was the voice of a mother who was afraid of the answer.

Daniel looked around the ballroom.

The guests who had come to celebrate a marriage were now witnesses to the collapse of a family.

He took a slow breath.

"I did not create the lie."

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

"But you protected it."

Daniel lowered his head.

"Yes."

The single word landed harder than any explanation could have.

Clara held Noah closer.

She could feel the boy's hand becoming colder in hers.

"Tell the truth," she said.

Daniel looked at her.

"I should have done it years ago."

"Then do it now."

The man looked toward Noah.

The child's eyes were still fixed on him.

There was no anger there.

Only confusion.

That made everything more painful.

"Your mother never wanted you to know what happened," Daniel said quietly.

Clara froze.

"My mother?"

Daniel nodded.

"She was afraid of what my family would do if the truth came out."

Eleanor looked shocked.

"Who was his mother?"

Nobody answered immediately.

The silence itself became an answer.

Clara's face changed as a terrible thought entered her mind.

"No."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Clara..."

"No."

Her voice became sharper.

"You are not going to stand there and tell me that after everything tonight."

Noah looked up at her.

"Mom?"

Clara immediately looked down.

She forced herself to stay calm for him.

"I am here."

But her eyes were already filled with fear.

Eleanor noticed.

"You knew something."

Clara shook her head.

"Not this."

Her voice trembled.

"I knew there were things people refused to tell me."

Daniel looked away.

"But I never knew this."

Eleanor stepped closer.

"Then what did you know?"

Clara swallowed.

"I knew Noah's father was not who everyone believed."

The guests exchanged shocked looks.

The room felt smaller with every secret being revealed.

Eleanor gripped the phone again.

"Then you knew enough to keep me away from the truth."

"No," Clara replied.

"I knew enough to protect my son."

The words stopped Eleanor.

The older woman looked at Noah again.

Protect my son.

Those three words changed something inside her.

She had spent years thinking about family as a legacy.

A name.

A reputation.

But Clara was talking about family as a person.

A child who needed someone to stand between him and the pain of adults.

Daniel slowly walked toward them.

"I made a mistake."

Clara looked at him with disbelief.

"A mistake?"

Her voice became quieter.

"You call hiding a child's identity for eight years a mistake?"

Daniel had no defense.

"I was trying to protect everyone."

"No."

Clara shook her head.

"You were trying to protect yourself."

Daniel looked like he wanted to argue.

But he stopped.

Because he knew she was right.

Eleanor turned the phone screen toward herself.

Her thumb hovered over the display.

"There is one message here I do not understand."

She looked at Daniel.

"Who is Rebecca?"

The color disappeared from his face.

Noah looked between them.

"Who is Rebecca?"

Nobody answered him.

Clara immediately noticed his expression.

She crouched down beside him.

"Hey, look at me."

Noah looked at her.

"Everything is okay."

"But everyone keeps saying names I don't know."

Clara's heart broke.

She touched his cheek gently.

"Sometimes adults make things complicated."

"Is it because of me?"

"No."

Her answer came instantly.

"Never because of you."

May you like

Eleanor watched the exchange quietly.

For years, she had believed protecting children meant hiding painful truths from them.
