Chương 5

The first line immediately made his breath stop.
"My son, if you are reading this, then I have failed to protect the people I love."
Daniel continued reading silently.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his expression changed.
Because the next sentence revealed the one secret nobody had prepared him for.
"Your uncle is not the only person who betrayed our family."
Daniel read the sentence again.
The words seemed impossible.
"Your uncle is not the only person who betrayed our family."
His fingers tightened around the letter.
For a moment, he wondered if he was misunderstanding what he was seeing.
His father was supposed to be the person who knew everything.
His mother was supposed to be the person who protected everyone.
His uncle was supposed to be the only person responsible.
But now even that belief was disappearing.
Emma noticed the change in his expression.
"What does it say?"
Daniel did not answer immediately.
He continued reading.
"My son, I spent years trying to fix what I broke."
"I thought I could protect everyone by keeping the truth hidden."
"But silence only gave power to the people who used it."
Daniel's breathing became slower.
His father was admitting what he had done.
Not through excuses.
Not through explanations.
Through regret.
"I made a choice before I met your mother that changed many lives."
"I believed I could control the consequences."
"I was wrong."
Daniel lowered the letter slightly.
His eyes were filled with disappointment.
"My father knew."
Emma nodded.
"He knew he made mistakes."
Daniel looked at her.
"Then why did everyone make my uncle the villain?"
Emma looked down.
"Because he was one."
"But?"
She took a breath.
"But he was not the beginning of the story."
Daniel continued reading.
"I need you to understand something, Daniel."
"The necklace your mother gave you was never just a family object."
"It was a promise."
"A promise that one day the truth would return to the people who deserved it."
Daniel looked at the baby.
The small necklace rested against the blanket.
A symbol of a family that had been divided by secrets.
The letter continued.
"Lily was my daughter."
"I failed her."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Hearing his father admit it felt different from hearing Emma explain it.
Because this was not a rumor.
This was the confession of a man who knew he had caused pain.
"I searched for her after I learned what happened."
"But by then, too much damage had been done."
"I wanted to bring her home."
"But your uncle convinced me that the scandal would destroy everything."
Daniel stopped reading.
He looked at Emma.
"My father knew Lily was alive."
"Yes."
"And he did nothing?"
Emma's expression softened.
"He tried."
Daniel looked away.
"Trying isn't enough."
Emma did not argue.
Because she knew he was right.
Daniel had spent his entire life admiring his father.
Now he was discovering that admiration came with a painful truth.
The people he loved were not heroes.
They were human.
They made choices.
They hurt others.
And sometimes those choices changed lives forever.
He continued reading.
"Your mother found out everything."
"She was furious with me."
"She told me that protecting a family name was never more important than protecting a person."
Daniel felt a strange sadness.
That sounded exactly like his mother.
She had always been the strongest person he knew.
"She wanted to tell you."
"But I was afraid."
"I thought losing the company would destroy your future."
Daniel shook his head.
"My future."
The words came out bitterly.
"My entire life was built on a lie."
Emma stepped closer.
"Daniel..."
He looked at her.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"But I need to hear this."
He looked back at the letter.
"I need to know everything."
He continued.
"The greatest mistake I made was trusting the wrong person."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
The next line answered him.
"I trusted your uncle because he was my brother."
Daniel froze.
The letter continued.
"But there was someone else who helped him."
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
Someone else.
Another person.
Another betrayal.
"I did not discover the truth until it was too late."
"Someone inside our family helped hide Lily."
Daniel looked up.
Emma's face showed the same fear.
"You know who it is," Daniel said.
Emma hesitated.
"Emma."
She slowly nodded.
"Yes."
"Who?"
She looked toward the letter.
"Your mother."
Daniel felt like the floor moved beneath him.
"No."
The denial came instantly.
"No, that can't be true."
Emma's eyes filled with sadness.
"Daniel..."
"My mother would never do that."
"I know what she meant to you."
"Then you know this is impossible."
Emma looked down.
"She didn't hide Lily because she wanted to hurt her."
Daniel stared at her.
"Then why?"
"Because she was trying to protect someone."
Daniel looked confused.
"Who?"
Emma did not answer.
The silence became unbearable.
Daniel looked back at the letter.
His father's handwriting continued.
"Your mother made a choice that she regretted every day."
"She believed she was saving someone from a danger she could not explain."
Daniel's hands trembled.
He kept reading.
"But in protecting one person, she hurt another."
The words felt heavier than anything before.
His mother.
The person who taught him compassion.
The person who told him family mattered more than wealth.
The person whose voice had just asked him to trust Emma.
She had also kept secrets.
"Who was she protecting?" Daniel whispered.
Emma walked closer.
"The answer is in the letter."
Daniel looked down again.
The next sentence waited.
"The person your mother protected was you."
Daniel stopped.
His eyes moved slowly across the words.
Me.
The word felt impossible.
"What does that mean?"
Emma sat down quietly.
"I don't know everything."
"But I know your mother believed you were in danger."
Daniel looked at her.
"From my uncle?"
Emma shook her head.
"No."
The answer frightened him more.
"From your father."
Daniel stared.
The room became silent.
May you like
"My father?"
Emma nodded slowly.
