Chương 2
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He said it before he even understood why.
"No, my mother would have told me."
Emma looked at him sadly.
"She wanted to."
"She tried."
"Someone stopped her."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Emma looked toward the hallway leading deeper into the apartment.
For a moment, she seemed afraid someone else might hear them.
Then she whispered a name Daniel never expected.
"Your uncle."
The name echoed in the quiet room.
Daniel had spent years believing his uncle was the only member of his family who truly supported him.
He remembered the man teaching him business.
He remembered the advice.
He remembered the comforting words after his parents died.
But now every memory felt different.
"Why would he hide something from me?"
Emma looked at the baby.
"Because if you knew the truth, he would lose everything."
Daniel stared at her.
The anger in his face slowly disappeared, replaced by a deeper emotion.
Betrayal.
He walked toward the window and looked down at the city below.
Thousands of people moved through the streets, unaware that his entire understanding of his own family was breaking apart.
"Why didn't you tell me five years ago?" he asked.
Emma's eyes filled with pain.
"Because five years ago, I was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
"Afraid they would take the baby away."
Daniel turned around quickly.
"The baby?"
Emma nodded.
"I spent years protecting this child."
Daniel looked at the newborn again.
Something about the tiny face made his anger disappear for a second.
He saw innocence.
He saw someone who had no idea how many secrets surrounded them.
"Is the baby mine?" he asked.
Emma did not answer immediately.
That silence was the answer he feared most.
Daniel's breathing became heavier.
The woman he loved was standing in front of him.
The child who carried his mother's necklace was in her arms.
And somewhere between the past and the present was a truth that could destroy everything he built.
Emma finally spoke.
"Daniel, before I tell you anything else, you need to know one thing."
She stepped closer.
"This baby is the reason your mother left you that necklace."
Daniel looked at the small piece of jewelry again.
"What does that mean?"
Emma reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.
Her hand trembled as she unlocked the screen.
"I saved something for the day you finally discovered the truth."
Daniel watched as she opened an old recording.
The screen showed a video dated years earlier.
And when his mother's voice filled the room, Daniel stopped breathing.
"Daniel, if you are watching this, it means the secret I protected is no longer hidden."
The voice of the woman he lost came from the phone.
A voice he never thought he would hear again.
"I need you to know that everything you believed about your family was a lie."
Daniel stood completely still.
Emma looked at him with tears in her eyes.
The baby slept peacefully between them as the voice continued.
"Your life was built on a secret I was never allowed to reveal."
Daniel stared at the screen.
For the first time in years, the powerful man who feared nothing felt afraid.
Because his mother's final message was not an apology.
It was a warning.
Daniel could not move.
The sound of his mother's voice filled the room, but it felt like it was coming from another world.
For years, he had imagined what he would say if he ever heard her again.
He imagined asking why she left so many unanswered questions behind.
He imagined asking why she never trusted him with the truth.
But now that moment had arrived, and he could only stand there in silence.
Emma watched his face carefully, seeing the pain he tried so hard to hide.
The recording continued.
"Daniel, I know you will feel betrayed when you hear this."
"But I need you to understand that every choice I made was to protect you."
Daniel's hands slowly tightened into fists.
His mother had always been the person who believed in honesty above everything.
The idea that she had hidden such a massive secret felt impossible.
The recording played on.
"There is a child who carries a part of our family history."
"A child who was never supposed to become a weapon in someone else's fight."
Daniel looked at Emma.
His eyes searched for an answer she could not give him.
The baby remained asleep, unaware of the storm surrounding them.
"My son," his mother's voice continued.
"If you are listening to this, then I am no longer here to explain everything myself."
"You must trust Emma."
Daniel immediately looked at the woman holding the baby.
His expression changed.
"Trust her?"
The words came out quietly, almost like he was speaking to himself.
Emma lowered her eyes.
"I know how it sounds."
Daniel looked back at the phone.
His mother's voice continued.
"Emma was the only person who tried to protect the truth when everyone else wanted it buried."
Daniel felt a painful confusion growing inside him.
He had spent five years believing Emma abandoned him.
Now his own mother was telling him that Emma had been protecting him.
"Why?" Daniel whispered.
"Why would everyone lie to me?"
Emma stepped closer but stopped when she saw the hurt in his eyes.
"Because your family knew what would happen if you discovered the truth."
Daniel looked at her.
"Then tell me."
His voice was calm, but the emotion underneath it was impossible to hide.
"No more secrets."
Emma nodded slowly.
She knew this moment had been coming for years.
She took a deep breath and sat down on the edge of the sofa, keeping the baby safely in her arms.
Daniel remained standing.
He was not ready to sit.
Not ready to accept that the life he knew was changing.
"Five years ago, before I left, I found documents hidden in your father's office," Emma said.
May you like
"Documents about your family."
Daniel listened carefully.
