Chương 3

"At first, I thought they were business records."

"But then I saw names."

"Names I recognized."

She looked at him.

"Your mother's name."

"Your father's name."

"And mine."

Daniel's face hardened.

"What kind of documents?"

Emma hesitated.

"The kind that proved your father had been hiding something from everyone."

The room became silent again.

Daniel walked slowly toward the sofa.

"What did they prove?"

Emma looked down at the baby.

"They proved that your father had another family connection before he met your mother."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means there was someone else connected to your family."

"Someone who knew about this child."

Daniel's eyes moved toward the baby.

"Who?"

Emma looked at him with sadness.

"Your father's first child."

Daniel froze.

The words felt unreal.

"My father had another child?"

Emma nodded.

"But your mother knew."

Daniel looked away.

A thousand memories rushed through his mind.

Family dinners.

Holiday gatherings.

Conversations where certain names were never mentioned.

The strange tension between his parents and his uncle.

All those moments he ignored suddenly felt important.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

"Because your uncle believed the truth would destroy the company."

Daniel looked confused.

"My uncle?"

Emma nodded.

"He thought your father’s first child would challenge your inheritance."

Daniel's expression changed.

"So this was about money?"

"At first, yes."

Emma paused.

"But then it became about control."

Daniel looked at the baby again.

"And this child?"

Emma gently touched the baby's blanket.

"This child is connected to that secret."

Daniel felt his heart sink.

"How?"

Emma looked at him.

"Because this baby's mother was the person who discovered the truth."

Daniel's eyes widened.

"Who is she?"

Emma stayed quiet.

Daniel immediately understood something was wrong.

"Emma."

Her eyes filled with emotion.

"I need you to understand why I couldn't tell you."

"Five years ago, when I discovered everything, I went to your uncle."

Daniel's expression darkened.

"You went to him?"

"Yes."

"What happened?"

Emma looked toward the window.

The city lights blurred through her tears.

"He told me that if I exposed the truth, he would destroy both of us."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"He threatened you."

Emma nodded.

"He said no one would believe me."

Daniel took a step closer.

"Why didn't you come to me?"

Emma looked directly at him.

"Because I did."

The answer shocked him.

"What?"

"I came to your office that night."

Daniel's face changed.

He remembered that night.

The night Emma disappeared.

The night he arrived home and found her gone.

"I waited for you," she said.

"I waited for hours."

Daniel swallowed.

"But you never came."

Emma shook her head.

"You were never supposed to be there."

Daniel stared at her.

"What are you talking about?"

Emma looked at the phone still playing the recording.

"Your uncle changed your schedule."

Daniel felt a cold feeling spread through him.

"Why?"

"Because he knew I was going to tell you everything."

The recording suddenly paused.

The room became completely silent.

Daniel looked at the frozen screen.

His mother's final message remained waiting.

Emma reached for the phone.

"There is more."

Daniel looked at her.

"Play it."

Emma pressed the screen.

His mother's voice returned.

"Daniel, if you have reached this point, then you know your uncle was involved."

Daniel's breathing became heavier.

"But there is something you need to understand."

"He was not the only one who hid the truth."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The recording continued.

"Your father made mistakes."

"But before he died, he tried to fix them."

Daniel slowly sat down.

For the first time, he looked exhausted.

His entire identity had been built around the image of a perfect family.

Now every piece was breaking apart.

"He left something for you," his mother's voice said.

"Something that will explain why this baby has the necklace."

Daniel looked at the newborn.

Emma held the child closer.

"Where is it?" Daniel asked.

Emma reached into the small bag beside her.

She pulled out an old envelope.

The paper looked worn, as if it had been hidden for years.

Daniel stared at it.

His name was written across the front.

In his father's handwriting.

A handwriting he recognized instantly.

His fingers trembled as he reached for it.

He had spent years believing his father left him nothing but memories.

But now, holding the envelope, he realized there had been one final message waiting for him all along.

And whatever was inside would finally reveal why everyone had been willing to destroy everything to keep it hidden.

Daniel stared at the envelope for several seconds before touching it.

The faded paper looked fragile, almost like it had survived only because someone desperately wanted it to reach him.

His father's handwriting was unmistakable.

Every curve of every letter brought back memories of a man Daniel had spent years trying to understand.

He remembered his father's strong voice.

He remembered the way he would place a hand on Daniel's shoulder and tell him that a family was built on trust.

Now those memories felt painful.

Because Daniel no longer knew which parts of his childhood were real and which parts had been carefully created to hide the truth.

Emma watched him silently.

She knew the envelope carried answers.

She also knew those answers could hurt him more than any secret she had already revealed.

Daniel slowly turned the envelope over.

There was no address.

No date.

Only his name.

"How long have you had this?" he asked.

Emma looked down.

"Since the night I left."

Daniel looked at her sharply.

"You had this the entire time?"

"I was protecting it."

"You were protecting it from me?"

Emma shook her head.

"No."

Her voice became softer.

"I was protecting it until you were ready to know the truth."

Daniel looked away.

Part of him wanted to be angry.

He wanted to blame Emma for every moment of confusion and pain.

But another part of him remembered his mother's words.

May you like

Trust Emma.

Those words were the only thing keeping him from walking away.
