Chương 4

The expensive decorations.
The perfect garden.
Everything that represented success now felt like a place built on secrets.
David looked at the front entrance.
"Inside."
Victoria raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
"We are going inside."
Emily looked nervous.
David noticed.
"It's okay."
She looked at him.
"No matter what we find, you won't face it alone."
Those words gave her the courage to move.
The three of them walked toward the mansion together.
But they were no longer a family walking home.
They were people entering a place where the truth had been hidden for years.
The massive front doors opened slowly.
Inside, everything looked exactly the same.
The polished floors.
The expensive artwork.
The grand staircase.
But Emily remembered a different version of this place.
A place where she had felt invisible.
A place where she had learned to stay quiet.
David walked into the hallway where Emily had once stood with her suitcase.
He stopped.
His eyes moved across the floor.
"You left from here."
Emily nodded.
"I waited for you."
David closed his eyes.
The pain on his face was impossible to hide.
"I was in my office."
Emily looked away.
"I know."
"What did Victoria tell you?"
Emily took a breath.
"She said you were tired of fighting with me."
David looked toward Victoria.
"I never said that."
"I know now."
Emily's voice became softer.
"But back then, I believed her."
David looked broken by the realization.
A father could survive many things.
But discovering that his child suffered because of a lie was something he could barely accept.
Victoria walked past them toward the library.
"If we are going to do this, then you should see everything."
David followed.
Emily stayed close beside him.
The library was one of the oldest rooms in the mansion.
Dark wooden shelves covered every wall.
Thousands of books surrounded an enormous desk.
Victoria walked to a hidden drawer beneath the desk.
David watched carefully.
"You kept something here."
Victoria did not answer.
She opened the drawer.
Inside was an old envelope.
Emily immediately recognized it.
Her breathing changed.
"That's it."
David looked at her.
"Are you sure?"
She nodded.
"I saw that envelope before."
Victoria picked it up slowly.
For the first time, her hands were not completely steady.
David noticed.
"You are afraid."
Victoria looked at him.
"No."
But her voice betrayed her.
David reached for the envelope.
Victoria held onto it.
"Before you open this, you need to understand something."
David stared at her.
"What?"
"Your wife was not only investigating me."
Emily looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria released the envelope.
"It means she was investigating you too."
David froze.
The room became silent.
Emily looked at her father.
"Why would Mom investigate Dad?"
Victoria looked directly at David.
"Because she believed you were keeping something from her."
David's face changed.
For the first time, uncertainty appeared in his eyes.
Emily noticed.
"What is she talking about?"
David did not answer immediately.
That hesitation created a new fear inside Emily.
She had spent years believing Victoria was the only person hiding things.
Now she wondered if there were secrets on both sides.
David opened the envelope carefully.
Inside were several old photographs and handwritten notes.
His hands became still when he saw the first page.
Emily looked at him.
"Dad?"
He did not respond.
The color drained from his face.
"What does it say?"
David slowly lowered the paper.
His voice was quiet.
"It says your mother discovered something about my family."
Emily stepped closer.
"What thing?"
David looked at the old documents.
Then he looked at his daughter.
A painful realization appeared in his eyes.
"Something I was never supposed to find out."
Victoria watched them both.
The confidence returned slightly.
Because she knew the truth inside that envelope could destroy more than one person.
It could change everything Emily believed about where she came from.
What should the next reveal focus on: David’s family secret, Emily’s mother’s investigation, or Victoria’s betrayal?
David stared at the old documents.
Then he looked at his daughter.
A painful realization appeared in his eyes.
"Something I was never supposed to find out."
The words stayed in the room long after he spoke them.
Emily watched her father carefully.
She had spent years searching for answers, but now the truth seemed more complicated than she ever imagined.
"Read it," she whispered.
David looked down at the papers again.
His hands trembled slightly as he unfolded the first page.
The handwriting belonged to his first wife, Sarah.
He knew that handwriting better than anyone.
He remembered the notes she used to leave on the kitchen counter.
He remembered the letters she wrote when he traveled for work.
Seeing it again after so many years felt like hearing a voice from the past.
"My love," David read quietly.
Emily moved closer.
Victoria remained near the bookshelf, watching every reaction.
"I have spent weeks trying to understand what is happening inside this family."
David stopped.
His eyes moved across the words.
"Sarah wrote this?"
Emily nodded.
"Yes."
David continued reading.
"I know you believe everything is under control, but there are things happening around you that you cannot see."
His expression became more serious.
"What things?" Emily asked.
David kept reading.
"Someone has been moving money from accounts connected to the family business."
The room became silent.
Victoria looked away.
David noticed.
He immediately looked at her.
"You knew about this."
Victoria did not answer.
"Victoria."
Her lips pressed together.
"I knew there were financial problems."
"Financial problems?"
David's voice became colder.
"This says someone was stealing from us."
Victoria stepped forward.
"Careful, David."
"No."
He held up the papers.
"You wanted the truth."
His eyes hardened.
"Now I want all of it."
Emily looked between them.
She could feel the tension changing.
This was no longer only about what happened to her.
This was about a much larger secret that had been hidden for years.

David continued reading.
"Sarah believed someone close to us was using my name to hide illegal transactions."
