Chương 2

For the first time in a long time, Emily felt like she was not completely alone.

Then the sound of a door opening echoed across the garden.

Both of them turned toward the mansion.

A woman stood in the doorway.

She was elegant, composed, and completely calm.

Victoria Carter wore a dark red luxury dress that matched her powerful presence.

Her blonde hair was perfectly styled, expensive jewelry reflected the sunlight, and her sunglasses hid the emotion in her eyes.

She looked at David and Emily as if she had been expecting this moment.

David's hand remained on Emily's shoulder.

His protective instincts immediately returned.

"Victoria," he said coldly.

The older woman slowly walked down the steps.

Her heels clicked against the stone pathway.

She did not appear frightened.

She did not appear surprised.

She only looked confident.

Emily moved slightly closer to David.

The fear on her face returned.

David noticed.

He stepped forward, placing himself between them.

"What did you do?" he asked.

Victoria tilted her head and gave a small, controlled smile.

"Interesting question."

David stared at her.

"I asked what you did."

The garden became silent.

Even the wind seemed to disappear.

Victoria removed her sunglasses slowly.

Her eyes moved from David to Emily.

"I didn't expect you to come home today."

Emily looked terrified.

David looked confused.

But beneath the confusion was something more dangerous.

The feeling that he was finally seeing the truth about the family he thought he knew.

Victoria continued walking toward them with complete confidence.

"You always were good at finding the truth when it was too late."

David's expression hardened.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria stopped a few feet away.

She looked at Emily, then back at him.

"It means there are things your daughter never told you."

Emily's breathing stopped.

David looked at his daughter.

The fear in her eyes told him everything.

There was another secret.

A secret that had been waiting inside the mansion for years.

And now it was finally coming out.

Emily's hands tightened around the edge of David's suit jacket as Victoria's words settled over the garden like a warning.

David looked from his daughter to his wife, trying to understand the years of silence that suddenly felt like a carefully constructed trap.

"What things?" he asked.

Victoria remained calm, almost amused by his anger.

"The things she never wanted you to know."

Emily immediately shook her head.

"That's not true."

Victoria's eyes moved toward her.

"Isn't it?"

David noticed the fear returning to Emily's face, and his expression hardened.

"Stop talking in circles."

Victoria slowly walked closer.

"You always hated uncertainty, David."

"Because uncertainty is what people use when they are hiding the truth."

A faint smile disappeared from Victoria's face.

For the first time, a small crack appeared in her confidence.

Emily saw it.

David saw it too.

The woman who had always controlled every conversation suddenly looked like someone who had lost control of the story.

"Tell me what happened," David said.

Victoria crossed her arms.

"You really want to know?"

"Yes."

"Even if it changes everything?"

David looked at Emily standing beside him.

His answer came immediately.

"I already lost years with my daughter because someone decided I didn't deserve the truth."

His voice became colder.

"I won't lose another minute."

Emily lowered her head.

She had imagined telling him the truth countless times.

She had imagined anger.

She had imagined rejection.

She had imagined him walking away.

But she never imagined him standing beside her.

Victoria studied David carefully.

"You always were protective of her."

"Because she's my daughter."

The words were simple, but they carried the weight of years of regret.

Emily looked at him, and something inside her broke.

She had spent so long believing she was unwanted that hearing him claim her so easily felt almost impossible.

Victoria sighed quietly.

"Fine."

She removed her sunglasses completely and held them in her hand.

"You want the truth?"

David said nothing.

"Then you need to hear everything."

The garden became completely silent.

Victoria looked toward the mansion.

"The night Emily left this house was not because she wanted to leave."

David's eyes narrowed.

"What are you saying?"

"I am saying she was pushed away."

Emily closed her eyes.

She did not want to hear the memory again.

She had carried it for years.

The feeling of standing in the hallway with a suitcase.

The feeling of hearing someone say she was destroying the family.

The feeling of believing nobody would come after her.

David turned toward Emily.

"Is that true?"

Emily struggled to speak.

"I tried to tell you."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"But every time I got close, something happened."

David's face changed.

"What kind of things?"

Emily looked toward Victoria.

The fear in her eyes was obvious.

Victoria answered before Emily could.

"She believed you were angry with her."

David stared at his wife.

"Because you told her that."

Victoria did not deny it.

That silence was enough.

David stepped back slightly.

He looked like someone who had just discovered that the foundation of his entire life was built on a lie.

"Why?"

The question came out quietly.

Victoria looked away for the first time.

"Because I was protecting this family."

"No."

David's voice became stronger.

"You were protecting yourself."

Victoria's jaw tightened.

"You have no idea what I had to do."

Emily finally spoke.

"No."

Both of them looked at her.

She wiped her tears and forced herself to stand taller.

"You don't get to say that."

Victoria looked surprised.

Emily had spent years avoiding confrontation.

But something had changed.

She was no longer the frightened young woman standing outside with two bags.

She was the daughter who had finally been heard.

"You made me believe my own father hated me."

Emily's voice shook, but she continued.

"You made me believe I was the reason everyone was unhappy."

Victoria's expression remained controlled.

"You were young and emotional."

May you like

"I was seventeen."

Emily stepped forward.
