Chương 7
Clara looked down.
"And he failed."
The words carried years of pain.
Outside, thunder moved across the sky.
Inside, the mansion felt like it was finally revealing its buried memories.
Rebecca took a step closer.
"There is one more thing."
Clara looked at her.
"What now?"
Rebecca reached into her coat and removed a small key.
She placed it beside the envelope.
"Your father left this for you."
Clara stared at it.
"What does it open?"
Rebecca looked toward the old wooden hallway leading deeper into the mansion.
"The room he told everyone never to enter."
Daniel's face changed instantly.
"No."
Clara noticed.
"What?"
Daniel looked at her with fear.
"That room should stay closed."
Clara looked at the key.
Then at Daniel.
After everything she had learned, his warning no longer sounded protective.
It sounded like another attempt to keep the truth away from her.
She picked up the key.
"Then I think it is time I finally see what my family has been hiding."
Which next scene should follow: the locked room discovery or Victor’s confrontation?
Clara walked toward the old hallway at the back of the mansion with the key tightly held in her hand.
Every step felt heavier than the one before.
The room had existed inside her childhood memories without her ever truly knowing it.
She remembered seeing that door when she was younger.
She remembered being told it was only storage.
A place filled with old family belongings.
But now she understood.
It had never been storage.
It had been a place where the truth was hidden.
Daniel followed behind her slowly.
Lily and Rebecca stayed close together, while Eleanor remained near the entrance of the main hallway.
Nobody spoke.
The sound of the rain against the windows was the only thing filling the mansion.
Clara stopped in front of the door.
The dark wooden surface looked exactly like she remembered.
But now it felt different.
It felt like a warning.
She inserted the key into the lock.
For a moment, her hand froze.
She thought about her father.
She thought about the man she loved.
The man she believed she understood.
Then she turned the key.
The lock clicked.
The door opened slowly.
A cold, dusty smell escaped from inside.
Clara stepped forward.
The room was smaller than she expected.
There were shelves along the walls.
Old boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
A wooden desk near the window.
Everything had been preserved carefully.
Not abandoned.
Protected.
Daniel stood at the doorway.
"I never entered after your father left."
Clara looked back at him.
"Why?"
Daniel looked into the room.
"Because he asked me not to."
Clara turned toward him.
"And you listened?"
Daniel nodded.
"I thought respecting his last request was the only thing I could do."
Clara looked around the room.
"Or maybe it was another secret you were comfortable keeping."
Daniel accepted the accusation.
"Maybe."
The honesty surprised her.
She turned back and continued searching.
On the desk was a small wooden box.
Unlike everything else in the room, it looked recently touched.
Clara opened it carefully.
Inside were several letters.
The first one had her name written on it.
Her breath caught.
She picked it up.
"These are all for me."
Rebecca stepped closer.
"Your father wrote them after he disappeared."
Clara looked at her.
"After he disappeared?"
Rebecca nodded.
"He wanted you to have them someday."
"Then why didn't I?"
Nobody answered.
Clara already knew.
Because another person decided she was not ready.
She opened the first letter.
My dear Clara.
If you are reading this, then the people around you finally decided that you deserved the truth.
Her eyes moved slowly.
I spent many years believing I could protect you by controlling what you knew.
I was wrong.
Clara felt tears forming.
Her father had always been a man of confidence.
Seeing his fear written on paper felt almost impossible.
The letter continued.
There are things about me that will disappoint you.
There are things about me that I wish I could erase.
But I need you to know one thing.
I never stopped loving you.
Clara closed her eyes.
For a moment, the anger disappeared.
Only the memory of her father remained.
Daniel watched silently.
He understood that this moment belonged to her.
She opened another letter.
This one was shorter.
It mentioned Victor.
It mentioned the company.
It mentioned the fear that someone close to the family had become dangerous.
Then Clara saw a name.
Daniel.
She looked up.
"Your name is here."
Daniel stepped closer.
"What does it say?"
Clara read silently.
Then she handed him the letter.
Daniel's hands shook as he took it.
Your father was afraid you would blame yourself for what happened.
He wanted you to understand that Daniel was not your enemy.
He made mistakes, but he was also one of the few people who tried to protect you.
Daniel looked away.
The emotion on his face was impossible to hide.
Clara noticed.
For the first time that night, she saw not a man defending himself.
She saw someone carrying years of guilt.
Lily walked toward the shelves.
"There is something else."
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed toward a hidden compartment behind several books.
Clara moved closer.
Inside was a small recording device.
Daniel immediately recognized it.
"That is your father's."
Rebecca looked surprised.
"He kept that?"
Clara picked it up.
"What is it?"
Daniel stared at it.
"Something he recorded before he left."
The room became silent.
Clara pressed the button.
At first, there was only static.
Then a familiar voice filled the room.
Her father's voice.
Clara froze.
"If you are hearing this, then something happened that prevented me from telling you myself."
Her hand covered her mouth.
Hearing him after so many years felt impossible.
"I need you to listen carefully."
The recording continued.
"The biggest mistake I made was believing secrets could protect people."
May you like
Everyone in the room listened.
"I hurt people by trying to control the truth."
