Chương 2

"This is why I came back."
Clara stared at the envelope.
"What is it?"
Daniel looked at her with exhausted eyes.
"The proof that everything you believed about our family was incomplete."
The words made the room feel smaller.
Clara did not take the envelope.
Not yet.
She looked at the man standing in front of her and wondered how someone could feel like a stranger after so many years together.
Daniel slowly lowered his hand.
"I know you hate me right now."
Clara said nothing.
"I know you think I betrayed you."
Still nothing.
"But before you decide who I am, you need to know why I made those choices."
Clara wiped her tears.
Her anger had not disappeared.
Her pain had not disappeared.
But beneath everything was a question she could no longer ignore.
"What happened?"
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
The older woman nodded slowly.
It was time.
Daniel opened his mouth, ready to reveal the secret that had controlled their family for decades.
But before he could speak, the sound of something falling upstairs echoed through the mansion.
Everyone turned toward the dark hallway.
The sudden noise changed the atmosphere instantly.
Daniel's face lost its color.
Eleanor whispered a name under her breath.
Clara noticed their reactions.
She realized there was someone else in the house.
Someone who had been listening.
Someone who knew the truth.
And as footsteps slowly approached from the upper floor, Clara understood that the secret she had uncovered was only the beginning.
The footsteps grew louder as they descended the wooden staircase.
Clara stood motionless, her eyes fixed on the shadow moving across the hallway wall.
Daniel's expression told her more than his words ever had.
He knew exactly who was coming.
Eleanor gripped the edge of a nearby table, her face filled with a mixture of fear and resignation.
The person who appeared at the bottom of the stairs was someone Clara never expected to see.
A young woman stood there, holding the railing tightly as if she needed it to remain standing.
She was in her late twenties, with dark hair falling over her shoulders and tear-filled eyes that immediately searched for Daniel.
Clara looked at her in confusion.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The silence between the four people in the mansion felt heavier than any accusation that had already been made.
Daniel slowly stepped forward.
"You should not have come down here."
The young woman looked at him with sadness.
"I heard everything."
Clara's heartbeat quickened.
She looked between Daniel and the stranger.
"Who is she?"
Daniel opened his mouth, but no words came out.
That hesitation hurt Clara more than any answer could have.
The young woman lowered her eyes.
"My name is Lily."
Clara waited.
She expected a last name.
She expected an explanation.
But the young woman remained silent.
Daniel finally spoke.
"She is my daughter."
The words seemed to freeze the entire room.
Clara stared at him.
She almost laughed because the truth felt too impossible to accept.
But Daniel's face showed that he was not lying.
Eleanor looked away.
That small movement confirmed everything.
Clara took a step backward.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"No, that is not possible."
Daniel looked at her with pain.
"Clara..."
"Do not say my name like that."
The anger returned instantly.
"You stood in front of me for years and never told me you had another daughter?"
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
"I did not know either."
Clara turned toward her.
The young woman's words stopped her for a moment.
"What do you mean?"
Lily looked at Daniel.
"I found out the truth only a few months ago."
Daniel closed his eyes.
The secret that had controlled his life was finally standing in front of everyone.
"I was young when Lily was born," he said.
"I made choices that hurt people."
Clara crossed her arms, trying to hold herself together.
"That explains nothing."
Daniel nodded.
"You are right."
He looked at Lily.
"Her mother and I were never married."
Clara's expression hardened.
"So you hid an entire person from me."
"No," Daniel said quickly.
"I hid my failure from you."
The words surprised her.
Daniel continued.
"I was twenty-two years old when I learned Lily existed."
Lily looked down.
"Her mother left before I had the chance to become the father I should have been."
Clara shook her head.
"And you never looked for her?"
Daniel's eyes filled with regret.
"I did."
"Then why did she grow up without you?"
The question was painful because there was no easy answer.
Daniel looked at Lily.
"Because I was too late."
Lily wiped a tear from her cheek.
"He tried to find me."
Her voice was soft.
"But by the time he did, my mother had already told me a different story."
Clara looked at her carefully.
"What story?"
Lily hesitated.
"That my father abandoned me."
The mansion became silent again.
Daniel looked down.
"I spent years believing I had lost the right to enter her life."
Clara looked at him with disbelief.
"And you thought the solution was to keep another secret?"
Daniel accepted the accusation.
"Yes."
The honesty caught her off guard.
"I thought if I told you, you would see me as someone who destroyed another family before he built ours."
Clara's eyes moved toward the photographs on the walls.
The perfect family memories suddenly looked different.
Every smile.
Every celebration.
Every moment she believed was complete.
Now carried questions.
"I loved you," she whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
"I know."
"No, you don't."
Her voice trembled.
"If you knew, you would have trusted me with the truth."
Daniel had no answer.
Because she was right.
Lily slowly stepped forward.
"I do not want to be the reason your family falls apart."
Clara looked at her.
For the first time, she noticed that Lily was not angry.
She was scared.
Scared of being rejected.
May you like
Scared of being blamed for something she never chose.
"You think I blame you?"
