Chương 4
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
The older woman closed her eyes.
She had carried this secret for too long.
"Rebecca was your father's daughter."
Clara felt the room spin.
Another daughter.
Another hidden life.
Another person erased from the family story.
"No."
Her voice was barely audible.
"My father had another child too?"
Daniel nodded.
"And Lily's mother knew about her."
Clara looked at him.
"How?"
"Because your father was connected to Rebecca's mother before he married yours."
Clara stepped away from the table.
The mansion suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Every room.
Every memory.
Every family celebration.
Everything she had trusted seemed to have another version hidden underneath.
"How many people knew?"
Daniel answered honestly.
"Too many."
Clara looked at Eleanor.
The older woman looked ashamed.
"I tried to make him tell you."
"But you stayed silent."
Eleanor lowered her head.
"Yes."
Clara closed her eyes.
She wanted to be angry at everyone.
She wanted someone to blame.
But every person standing in that hallway carried their own wounds.
Daniel.
Eleanor.
Lily.
Even the father she had lost years ago.
"Where is Rebecca now?"
Daniel looked at the floor.
"I don't know."
The answer shocked her.
"You don't know?"
"I spent years trying to find her."
"And?"
"I found only pieces."
Clara looked back at the documents.
"Then why bring this to me now?"
Daniel's face changed.
Because that was the question he had been avoiding.
"Because Rebecca contacted me."
The air disappeared from Clara's lungs.
"She's alive?"
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Lily stepped forward.
"She was the one who gave him these documents."
Clara looked between them.
"Then where is she?"
Daniel looked toward the front doors.
"She is waiting."
The words created a new silence.
Clara stared at the entrance of the mansion.
Someone else was outside.
Someone who carried a piece of their family's history.
Someone who had been missing from their lives for decades.
Daniel moved toward the door.
Clara immediately stopped him.
"No."
He turned around.
She held the photograph tightly.
"You don't get to control how this happens anymore."
Daniel stopped.
Clara walked past him and placed the documents back on the table.
"If she is coming here, she comes in and tells me herself."
Daniel nodded.
For the first time that night, he accepted her decision without argument.
The older woman near the door stepped forward.
"Clara."
Clara looked at Eleanor.
"I know you are hurt."
Clara gave a small, bitter smile.
"Hurt is a simple word for this."
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
"You have every right to be angry."
Clara looked at the people around her.
"I spent my entire life believing my family was built on truth."
She paused.
"Now I don't even know what parts of my own memories are real."
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
A few moments later, the sound of a car stopping outside broke through the silence.
Everyone looked toward the entrance.
Daniel's face became tense.
Lily reached for the edge of the table.
Eleanor whispered softly.
"She is here."
Clara stood still.
Her heart raced.
She had spent the last hour discovering that the people closest to her had hidden entire lives from her.
Now another person was about to walk through those doors.
A stranger who shared her blood.
A stranger who knew things her own family had buried.
The front door slowly opened.
A woman stepped inside.
She appeared to be in her early forties.
Her eyes immediately found Clara.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then the woman looked at Daniel.
"You finally told her."
Daniel lowered his head.
"Yes."
The woman looked back at Clara.
There was sadness in her expression, but also something else.
Recognition.
"My name is Rebecca."
Clara felt tears forming again.
Not because she was angry.
Not because she was afraid.
Because after years of believing her family was complete, she was finally meeting someone who had always been missing.
Rebecca took a small step forward.
"I know this is a lot to accept."
Clara said nothing.
Rebecca held out a small envelope.
"This belonged to your father."
Clara looked at the envelope but did not take it.
"What is inside?"
Rebecca's expression became serious.
"The reason he hid all of us."
The mansion fell silent once more.
Clara looked at the envelope, knowing that opening it could change everything she had ever believed.
Continue with the envelope reveal or Rebecca’s full confession?
Clara stared at the envelope in Rebecca's hand, unable to move.
The entire mansion seemed to hold its breath.
For years, she had searched for answers about her family without ever knowing the questions were much bigger than she imagined.
Now the truth stood in front of her in the form of a woman she had never met but somehow recognized.
Rebecca slowly lowered the envelope.
"I know you have every reason not to trust me."
Clara looked at her carefully.
"I do not know you."
Rebecca nodded.
"That is exactly why I came."
Daniel remained near the doorway, silent and tense.
Clara noticed his expression.
He was not afraid of Rebecca.
He was afraid of what she would reveal.
"Everyone keeps saying they want me to know the truth," Clara said.
"But every truth seems to come with another secret."
Rebecca accepted the words without defending herself.
"Because the first secret was never the real one."
Clara looked at the envelope again.
"What is inside?"
Rebecca looked down at it.
"A letter your father wrote before he disappeared from your life."
The mention of her father made Clara's expression change.
She had spent years remembering him as a loving man who worked hard to provide for his family.
He was the person who taught her how to ride a bicycle.
The person who stayed awake during storms because he knew she was afraid of thunder.
The person who promised her that family would always protect each other.
Now she wondered how much of that promise had been real.

"Why did you have it?"
Rebecca took a slow breath.
