Chương 7

Daniel did not avoid it.

“I was afraid.”

Michael nodded slowly.

“I figured.”

“I thought staying away would hurt less.”

“Did it?”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

Michael looked down.

“Good.”

The word surprised Daniel.

“Good?”

“Yes.”

Michael looked back at him.

“Because I spent years thinking you left because you did not care.”

Daniel felt the pain of that sentence.

“I cared.”

“Then why?”

Daniel took a breath.

“Because I was scared and selfish.”

Michael studied him.

At least the answer was honest.

And for the first time, that seemed to matter.

“I do not know what happens next,” Michael said.

Daniel nodded.

“Neither do I.”

“But I wanted to see if you were real.”

Daniel looked confused.

“What do you mean?”

Michael gave a small shrug.

“I spent years imagining who you were.”

He paused.

“I needed to know if the person in my head matched the person standing here.”

Daniel looked down.

“And?”

Michael looked at him for a long moment.

“I am still deciding.”

Daniel nodded.

“That is fair.”

The three of them sat together for the first time.

Not as a perfect family.

Not as if the missing years could be returned.

But as people willing to face what had happened.

And for Daniel, that was the first real step toward repairing what he had once abandoned.

And for Daniel, that was the first real step toward repairing what he had once abandoned.

The conversation that followed was not easy.

There were no perfect words that could erase twenty-two years of absence.

There was no apology powerful enough to return missed birthdays, lost memories, or ordinary moments that could never happen again.

But Daniel stayed.

That was the difference.

For the first time, he did not run from the discomfort.

He did not search for an excuse.

He simply listened.

Michael asked questions slowly at first.

Some were simple.

Some were painful.

“Did you ever think about me?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Every day.”

Michael’s expression remained guarded.

“Even when you were building a different life?”

“Yes.”

“Did Claire know?”

Daniel glanced toward Claire.

She gave him a small nod.

“Not until recently.”

Michael looked between them.

“She found out because of the letter?”

“Yes.”

Michael leaned back slightly.

“I guess that was a lot for both of you.”

Claire answered quietly.

“It was.”

Michael studied her.

“I’m sorry you found out that way.”

Claire appreciated the sincerity in his voice.

“Thank you.”

She paused.

“But I am glad the truth came out.”

Michael looked surprised.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Secrets do more damage when they stay hidden.”

Michael nodded slowly.

That was something he understood.

He had lived with unanswered questions his entire life.

The afternoon passed with small pieces of conversation.

Michael talked about his childhood.

He talked about the mother who raised him.

He talked about the questions he carried.

Daniel listened to every word.

Even when the words hurt.

Especially when they hurt.

“I used to think there was something wrong with me,” Michael admitted.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Why would you think that?”

“Because kids always wonder why someone leaves.”

The sentence was quiet.

But it hit Daniel harder than anger ever could.

Michael looked down at his hands.

“My mom never told me you were a bad person.”

Daniel looked at him.

“She didn’t?”

“No.”

Michael shook his head.

“She said you were someone who made a choice you regretted.”

Daniel swallowed.

“She was right.”

Michael looked at him.

“That might be the first thing you said today that actually helps.”

Daniel gave a small nod.

“I deserve that.”

Michael looked toward Claire.

“You two seem different than I expected.”

Claire raised an eyebrow.

“What did you expect?”

Michael thought for a moment.

“I don’t know.”

He smiled slightly.

“Maybe more anger.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“There was anger.”

Michael noticed the honesty.

“But there was also love,” Claire continued.

“And that made everything more complicated.”

Michael nodded.

He seemed to understand.

Because complicated was the word that described all of their lives.

Nothing about the situation fit into a simple category.

Nobody was completely innocent.

Nobody was completely without pain.

When they left the restaurant, Michael did not hug Daniel.

Daniel did not expect him to.

They were not at that point.

Instead, Michael stood outside and looked at him.

“I think I need time.”

Daniel nodded.

“You have it.”

“Are you going to disappear again?”

The question stopped Daniel.

He looked directly at him.

“No.”

Michael watched him carefully.

“I can’t promise everything will be easy.”

“I know.”

“But I will not disappear.”

Michael nodded.

“That matters.”

It was not forgiveness.

But it was a beginning.

On the drive home, Claire looked out the window.

Daniel kept both hands on the steering wheel.

Neither of them spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Daniel broke the silence.

“I don’t know if I handled that right.”

Claire turned toward him.

“You showed up.”

“Yes.”

“You listened.”

“Yes.”

“You answered when it was uncomfortable.”

Daniel nodded.

“Then you did something right.”

He looked at her.

“Thank you.”

Claire looked away.

“Don’t thank me yet.”

Daniel understood.

There was still work to do.

Their marriage was not magically repaired because the truth was revealed.

Trust was not rebuilt in a single conversation.

Healing was not something that happened because people wanted it to.

It required patience.

Consistency.

And time.

The following weeks were difficult.

Daniel began meeting with Michael regularly.

Sometimes they talked for hours.

Sometimes they only shared a meal and sat quietly.

There were moments when Michael was angry.

There were moments when he asked questions Daniel did not know how to answer.

But Daniel stayed.

Every time.

He showed up.

Claire watched the changes carefully.

She saw something she had never seen before.

Daniel was no longer trying to escape his past.

He was finally facing it.

One evening, Claire found him sitting alone in the living room, looking through old photographs.

May you like

“What are you doing?”

Daniel looked up.
