Chương 4

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.”

“And you knew about him?”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

The answer surprised her.

“What do you mean?”

“Emily never told me where they went.”

Daniel’s voice became heavier.

“She said she needed time.”

Claire shook her head slightly.

“And you never tried to find them?”

Daniel did not answer immediately.

That silence told her there was more.

“I tried once.”

“Once?”

“Yes.”

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“And then?”

“I stopped.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid.”

The honesty was painful.

Not because it made him look cruel.

Because it made him look human.

“I was afraid that after all those years, I had no right to appear in their life.”

Claire looked at him.

“You were afraid of hurting someone you already hurt.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

The answer was difficult to accept.

But she understood what he meant.

A person could run from guilt for years.

But guilt never truly disappeared.

It waited.

It followed.

It returned when the past finally found a way back.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Daniel looked at her.

“That is the part I regret most.”

“Why?”

“Because when I met you, I wanted to tell you.”

Claire stayed quiet.

“But every time I tried, I imagined losing you.”

Her expression changed slightly.

“Daniel.”

“I know.”

He interrupted himself.

“I know that sounds selfish.”

“It does.”

He accepted it.

“I was afraid that you would see me differently.”

Claire looked down.

“Maybe I would have.”

Daniel nodded.

“But I would have respected you more for telling me.”

The words hurt because he knew they were true.

“I kept waiting for the right moment.”

Claire gave a small, sad laugh.

“The right moment never comes when you are hiding something.”

Daniel had no argument.

She was right.

“Then why did Emily send the letter now?”

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“She said our son wanted answers.”

Claire looked at him carefully.

“Our son?”

Daniel nodded.

“His name is Michael.”

The name was spoken with emotion.

Not just regret.

Something deeper.

A connection he had never allowed himself to feel.

“Have you met him?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not yet.”

Claire studied him.

“Do you want to?”

Daniel looked toward the floor.

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

“And that scares you.”

“Yes.”

“Because you don’t know what he will think of you.”

Daniel nodded.

“Because I don’t know if I deserve the chance.”

Claire was silent.

She had imagined many explanations for the envelope.

Many possibilities.

But she had never imagined this.

The anger she felt earlier was still there.

The feeling of betrayal was still real.

But now it existed beside something else.

Understanding.

“You should have told me,” she said again.

“I know.”

“You should have trusted me.”

“I know.”

“And you should have let me decide if this was something we could face together.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I know.”

Claire took a slow breath.

The answer she had wanted all night was not an apology.

It was accountability.

And finally, she was hearing it.

She picked up the letter again.

“Does Emily want anything from you?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Money?”

“No.”

“An apology?”

Daniel paused.

“Yes.”

Claire looked at him.

“She deserves one.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

“And Michael?”

Daniel’s eyes became emotional.

“I don’t know what he wants.”

Claire looked at the man she loved.

For the first time that night, she saw not only the husband who had hidden something.

She saw the person who had spent decades carrying a mistake he never knew how to repair.

But seeing his pain did not erase hers.

It only made the truth more complicated.

“Tomorrow,” Claire said.

Daniel looked at her.

“Tomorrow?”

“We talk more.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

“But tonight, I need space.”

The words were gentle.

Not a punishment.

Not a threat.

A boundary.

Daniel accepted it.

“I understand.”

Claire looked at the hanger resting on the table.

Then she looked at him.

“I picked that up because I was angry.”

Daniel gave a faint, sad smile.

“I know.”

“But I never wanted to hurt you.”

“I know.”

The two of them stood quietly in the center of the room.

The secret that had separated them was finally spoken.

But the damage it caused was still there.

And now they had to decide whether the truth would destroy what they built or become the beginning of something more honest.

And now they had to decide whether the truth would destroy what they built or become the beginning of something more honest.

Daniel remained standing near the center of the room, unsure if he should say anything else.

For the first time in years, he had nothing left to hide behind.

No carefully prepared explanation.

No convenient excuse.

No version of the story that made him look better.

Only the truth.

Claire walked slowly toward the window, looking out at the quiet street below.

The reflection of the room appeared faintly on the glass.

She could see Daniel behind her.

She could see the distance between them.

“I need you to understand something,” she said.

Daniel waited.

“I am not angry because you had a past.”

He nodded.

“I am angry because you decided I could not be trusted with the truth.”

Her words were calm, but they carried the weight of everything she had felt that evening.

Daniel looked down.

“I know.”

“You built a life with me while keeping an entire person hidden from me.”

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

“I know.”

“You let me believe I knew everything about you.”

“I was wrong.”

Claire turned around.

The directness of his answer surprised her.

There was no defense.

No attempt to shift blame.

Only regret.

“That does not fix it,” she said.

“I know.”

“But it matters that you finally admit it.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I should have done this years ago.”

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

He accepted it.

“I don’t know what happens now.”

Claire looked at him for a moment.
