Chương 5

“Neither do I.”

The honesty between them felt different from the honesty that had existed before.

It was painful.

But it was real.

Daniel moved toward the sofa and sat down slowly.

The confidence he carried outside their home was gone.

He looked like someone who had finally stopped running.

Claire remained near the window.

She needed the space.

Not because she hated him.

Because she needed to understand what she was feeling.

She had spent the last several hours moving between anger and confusion.

She had imagined betrayal.

She had imagined lies.

But she had not imagined a forgotten family waiting somewhere beyond the life they shared.

“I keep thinking about Michael,” Daniel said quietly.

Claire looked at him.

“Do you know anything about him?”

“Only what Emily wrote.”

“What did she say?”

Daniel looked at the letter.

“She said he is kind.”

A small emotion crossed his face.

“She said he asks questions about me.”

Claire listened.

“She told him the truth about who I was.”

Daniel’s voice became softer.

“She told him I was young and scared.”

“And what did she tell him about you leaving?”

Daniel looked away.

“She told him I made a mistake.”

Claire absorbed that.

Not because it was surprising.

Because it was the first time she heard Daniel describe his own actions without trying to soften them.

“Do you think he hates you?”

Daniel was quiet for a moment.

“I think he has every reason to.”

Claire looked at him.

“That is a heavy thing to carry.”

“It is.”

“Have you carried it all these years?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why did you never talk about it?”

He looked at her.

“Because every time I thought about saying it, I felt like I was bringing a shadow into the life we created.”

Claire’s expression softened slightly.

“You already brought the shadow.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“It was just invisible to me.”

The words stayed with him.

Because that was exactly what had happened.

The secret had not disappeared.

It had simply existed in silence.

“I am sorry,” Daniel said.

Claire did not answer immediately.

She had heard apologies before.

But this one sounded different.

It was not an attempt to make the pain disappear.

It was an acceptance that the pain existed.

“I believe you are sorry,” she finally said.

Daniel looked up.

“But I still need time.”

“I understand.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

Claire studied him.

“You have spent twenty-two years avoiding one conversation.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

“I cannot solve my feelings in one night.”

“You shouldn’t have to.”

The response made her pause.

She looked at the man she had loved for years.

The man who had hurt her.

The man who was also hurting.

Life was rarely simple enough to place someone completely on one side of a story.

Sometimes people could be wrong and still deserve compassion.

Sometimes people could be loved and still cause pain.

Claire walked back toward the table and picked up the envelope.

“I want to meet him.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“What?”

“Michael.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because he is part of this now.”

Daniel stood slowly.

“Claire, you don’t have to do that.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

She looked at the letter.

“Because if we are going to face this, we face all of it.”

Daniel felt emotion rise in his chest.

He had expected anger.

He had expected distance.

He had not expected this.

“But I don’t even know if he wants to meet me,” Daniel said.

“Then you find out.”

“And if he doesn’t?”

Claire looked at him.

“Then you respect that.”

Daniel nodded.

The answer was difficult.

But it was right.

For the first time that night, they were not talking about hiding.

They were talking about consequences.

They were talking about choices.

They were talking about moving forward.

The clock on the wall continued ticking.

Neither of them noticed how much time had passed.

The room that had started with anger had slowly transformed into a place where painful truths could finally exist.

Claire sat down on the sofa.

Daniel remained standing for a moment before sitting across from her.

The distance between them was still there.

But it no longer felt impossible to cross.

“Tell me about the day you left,” Claire said.

Daniel looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because I need to understand who you were then.”

He thought for a moment.

“Not because I want to excuse what happened.”

“I know.”

“But because I need to understand how someone I love could make a choice like that.”

Daniel nodded.

He looked toward the floor.

“It was raining that day.”

Claire listened.

“I remember sitting in my car outside her apartment.”

His voice became quieter.

“I had a bag packed.”

“You were leaving?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Claire’s expression changed.

“I left before she woke up.”

The sadness in his voice was impossible to miss.

“I thought leaving would make things easier.”

“And did it?”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“It made everything harder.”

He took a breath.

“I spent years telling myself that I had made the right choice.”

“And when did you stop believing that?”

Daniel looked at the letter.

“The moment I realized time passing did not erase what I did.”

Claire remained silent.

The truth was painful.

But it was also the first complete version of his story she had ever heard.

“I cannot change what happened,” Daniel said.

“But I can decide what I do now.”

Claire looked at him.

“That is the part we need to figure out.”

Daniel nodded.

Together, they sat in the quiet room.

Not healed.

Not fixed.

Not back to normal.

But no longer pretending.

And for the first time since Claire discovered the letter, the future did not feel completely lost.

The following morning arrived quietly.

The sunlight entered through the tall windows of the house, touching the same elegant room where everything had changed the night before.
