Chương 4

Colonel Reeves did not react.

“Claire discovered it.”

Daniel looked toward our father.

“Mom knew?”

“Yes.”

The colonel continued.

“She was preparing to report it.”

The room felt heavy.

I remembered being a child.

I remembered my mother packing a suitcase one night.

I remembered my father telling us she was being dramatic.

I remembered Daniel crying at the window after she left.

For years, we believed she abandoned us.

But maybe she had been trying to save herself.

Maybe she had been trying to save us too.

My father shook his head.

“You have no idea what you are saying.”

Emily looked at him.

“Then why are you scared?”

That question stopped him.

Because it was the only question nobody had ever asked him.

Why are you scared?

He had spent years making everyone else afraid.

But now the fear belonged to him.

Colonel Reeves opened another folder.

“There is also a witness statement.”

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

The colonel looked at the doorway.

Everyone followed his gaze.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Tired.

Holding a small bag.

My heart stopped.

I recognized her.

She had worked for our family years ago.

Her name was Maria.

She had been our mother’s assistant.

She had disappeared shortly after Claire vanished.

Daniel whispered her name.

“Maria?”

The woman stepped inside slowly.

“I should have come sooner.”

My father stared at her.

“You.”

Maria looked at him.

“Yes.”

His face became furious.

“You have no right to be here.”

Maria’s voice shook.

“But I do.”

She looked at Daniel and me.

“I owe your mother the truth.”

Emily moved closer to her.

“What happened?”

Maria looked toward the floor.

“Your mother found out your father was not just hiding money.”

She paused.

“He was hiding people.”

The sentence made everyone go quiet.

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Maria looked at Colonel Reeves.

He nodded.

“Tell them.”

Maria gripped the strap of her bag.

“Claire discovered that Richard had been using his influence to threaten employees, silence witnesses, and destroy anyone who challenged him.”

My father’s face turned red.

“That is enough.”

Maria flinched.

But she continued.

“She kept copies.”

She looked at the document holder.

“She planned to expose everything.”

Daniel looked at my father.

“Did you hurt her?”

The question came out quietly.

But it carried years of pain.

My father stared at him.

“I loved your mother.”

Nobody moved.

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s not an answer.”

My father looked away.

Colonel Reeves stepped forward.

“We are not here to decide everything tonight.”

He looked at the documents.

“But the truth is finally moving forward.”

My father suddenly grabbed the edge of the counter.

His breathing became heavier.

“You think you can destroy me?”

Nobody answered.

He looked at Daniel.

“You are my son.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with emotion.

“And you were supposed to protect us.”

The words broke something inside the room.

My father looked away.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not dangerous.

Just old.

Emily lowered the object she had been holding.

The fear in her eyes was still there.

But now there was relief too.

She had spent months believing she was fighting alone.

She was not.

Colonel Reeves gathered the documents.

“We need to leave before anything else happens.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What else?”

The colonel hesitated.

That hesitation made everyone nervous.

“What?”

Colonel Reeves looked at the envelope again.

“There is one more name connected to the investigation.”

My father’s eyes moved toward him.

“Whose?”

The colonel looked directly at him.

“Yours.”

The room became silent.

Then he continued.

“But not in the way you think.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Colonel Reeves pulled out another paper.

“This investigation started because someone inside your father’s organization came forward.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“Who?”

The colonel placed the paper down.

The name was visible.

Daniel read it.

Then he stepped backward.

“No.”

I looked at the paper.

My heart sank.

Because the person who had exposed Richard Hale was someone none of us expected.

It was my father’s closest friend.

The man who had defended him for thirty years.

The man who had been beside him through everything.

And the name written on that page was Thomas Hale.

My father’s own brother.

My father stared at the name on the page as if it had physically struck him.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The rain outside continued tapping against the windows, but inside the kitchen, the silence was overwhelming.

Thomas Hale.

His younger brother.

The one person my father always claimed was the only person in the world who truly understood him.

Daniel looked between the paper and our father.

“Uncle Thomas?”

Colonel Reeves nodded.

“Yes.”

My father finally found his voice.

“That’s impossible.”

Maria looked at him sadly.

“No, Richard.”

She shook her head.

“It was always possible.”

My father turned toward her.

“You knew?”

Maria lowered her eyes.

“I knew he was watching.”

The anger returned to my father’s face.

“Watching what?”

“The truth.”

Those two words seemed to hit harder than an accusation.

My father stepped backward.

“You all planned this.”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

He held up the paper.

“This started before tonight.”

My father looked toward the document holder.

His confidence was slowly disappearing.

Colonel Reeves noticed.

“You were so focused on controlling everyone around you that you never considered the people closest to you were the ones keeping records.”

My father clenched his jaw.

“My brother is loyal.”

Maria answered quietly.

“He was.”

My father looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

Maria took a deep breath.

“It means he spent thirty years believing you could change.”

Nobody spoke.

She continued.

“He defended you when people questioned your decisions.”

She looked at the floor.

“He defended you when Claire confronted you.”

Daniel looked shocked.

“Mom confronted him?”

Maria nodded.

“Many times.”

My father’s expression tightened.

“She was my wife.”

Maria looked at him.

May you like

“She was also a person.”

The words were simple.
