Chương 2

The colonel calmly replied.
“I know exactly what I am involved in.”
Emily’s lips trembled.
She looked like she was trying not to cry.
“I spent months collecting everything because I knew nobody would believe me.”
Daniel looked hurt.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Emily looked down.
“Because every time someone challenged him, they disappeared from our lives.”
The sentence hit harder than any scream could have.
Nobody spoke.
Even my father became quiet.
Colonel Reeves opened the document holder.
He removed the first paper.
“This shows the accounts that were hidden from the family.”
He placed it on the counter.
“This shows the messages where threats were made.”
Another paper followed.
“And this shows the reports that were ignored because people were afraid of him.”
My father’s face turned red.
“You don’t understand anything.”
Colonel Reeves looked at him.
“No.”
He paused.
“I understand everything.”
My father moved forward again.
His fists tightened.
His body language became aggressive.
“You walk into my house and accuse me?”
The colonel did not move.
“This ends right now.”
The words were calm.
But they carried the weight of a final warning.
My father took another step forward.
Daniel immediately stepped between them.
“Dad, stop.”
My father looked at him with disbelief.
“You’re choosing them?”
Daniel’s voice shook.
“I’m choosing the truth.”
For a moment, nobody moved.
Emily stood behind Daniel, still frightened but no longer alone.
My father looked around the kitchen.
At his son.
At Emily.
At the colonel.
At the papers that could destroy everything he had built.
The man who had always controlled the room suddenly had no control at all.
Colonel Reeves closed the document holder.
The sound was small.
But it felt like the end of something much bigger.
“I didn’t come here to fight you.”
He looked at my father.
“I came here because people were afraid to stand against you.”
Outside, the wind pushed against the windows.
Inside, the truth finally had a voice.
And for the first time in years, my father was the one who looked afraid.
My father was silent for several seconds, and that silence was more unsettling than his anger had been.
Everyone in the kitchen knew Richard Hale did not stay quiet because he had nothing to say.
He stayed quiet because he was searching for a way to regain control.
His eyes moved slowly from one person to another.
He looked at Daniel first.
The disappointment on his face was carefully displayed, almost like a performance.
“You really believe this?”
Daniel swallowed.
“I believe what I saw.”
My father’s jaw tightened.
“You saw a stranger walk in here with papers.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked toward Emily.
“I saw you scare her.”
Those words landed harder than anything else.
My father stared at him.
For years, Daniel had been the son who defended him.
The son who made excuses.
The son who told everyone that their father was difficult but meant well.
But now Daniel was standing between him and the person he had tried to silence.
My father gave a bitter smile.
“So this is what she wanted.”
Emily looked confused.
“What?”
“To turn my own son against me.”
Colonel Reeves stepped forward slightly.
“Do not redirect responsibility.”
My father looked at him.
“You don’t know my family.”
The colonel’s expression remained controlled.
“I know enough.”
He tapped the document holder lightly.
“I know about the accounts you moved.”
My father’s face changed.
Only for a moment.
But it was enough.
Daniel noticed.
Emily noticed.
I noticed.
The colonel continued.
“I know about the contracts signed under false names.”
My father looked away.
“And I know about the people who tried to report what happened and were pressured into silence.”
The room became completely still.
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Is that why you were afraid?”
Emily nodded slowly.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know who I could trust.”
Daniel’s expression softened.
“You could have trusted me.”
She looked down.
“I wanted to.”
Her voice became quieter.
“But every time I tried to tell you something, he already knew.”
Daniel froze.
“What does that mean?”
Emily looked at my father.
“He was watching everything.”
My father immediately responded.
“That is ridiculous.”
But his denial came too quickly.
Colonel Reeves opened another section of the document holder.
“There are records of private monitoring devices placed throughout the house.”
Daniel stared at him.
“What?”
Emily covered her mouth.
She had suspected it, but hearing it confirmed made the reality even worse.
My father looked around the kitchen.
“This is my house.”
Colonel Reeves answered calmly.
“Your house does not give you permission to invade people’s privacy.”
My father laughed quietly.
“You all sound very brave tonight.”
He looked at Emily.
“But you know what happens when people stop listening to me.”
The threat was not loud.
It did not need to be.
Everyone understood what he meant.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Are you threatening her?”
My father looked at him.
“I’m warning her.”
Daniel’s hands tightened into fists.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“That’s what you always do.”
My father frowned.
“What?”
“You call it advice.”
Daniel’s voice became stronger.
“You call it protection.”
He pointed toward the documents.
“But it is control.”
For the first time, my father looked genuinely surprised.
He had never expected Daniel to say those words.
Not to his face.
Not in his own kitchen.
Emily lowered her eyes.
A tear moved down her cheek.
Not because she was weak.
Because she finally heard someone else say what she had been afraid to say for years.
Colonel Reeves looked at Daniel.
“You should read everything before making any decisions.”
Daniel nodded.
My father stepped toward the counter.
The movement was slow but aggressive.
His shoulders were rigid.
His breathing became heavier.
“You have no idea what you are destroying.”
Daniel did not move.
“Maybe we are finally destroying the right thing.”
May you like
The sentence caused my father to stop.
A loud knock suddenly came from the front door.
