Chương 1

""Claire hit the hardwood floor hard enough to scatter the hospital papers before anyone in the doorway seemed to understand that she had actually fallen.

Her left hand caught the edge of the kitchen counter too late, and her right arm closed around the enormous curve of her belly as pain tightened through her back and drove the air from her lungs.

“Ethan… the twins are coming.”

Her husband stopped with one polished shoe on the entry rug and the other still on the hardwood.

The car keys hung motionless between his fingers.

“Hospital,” Claire managed.

She swallowed against another sharp pressure low in her pelvis.

“Now.”

Ethan turned toward her.

His mother stopped him with one hand against his chest.

It was such a small gesture that Claire might have missed it if she had not been staring directly at him.

Victoria did not shove her son or grab his arm.

She simply placed her palm against his pale shirt as though reminding him of an arrangement already made.

Ethan looked down at her hand.

Then he looked toward Claire.

Behind Victoria, afternoon light poured through the open black front door and made the driveway almost painfully bright.

Claire could see the rear quarter of Ethan’s car outside.

She could also see her sister-in-law, Madison, standing near the threshold with two glossy shopping bags hanging from one wrist and her phone in the opposite hand.

Madison glanced up.

Her eyes met Claire’s for perhaps a second.

Then they dropped back to the screen.

“Ethan,” Claire said again.

“I heard you.”

His answer came too quickly.

Claire pressed her palm flat against the floor and tried to get one knee beneath herself.

The movement sent a different sensation through her abdomen, not merely pain this time but an immense downward pressure that frightened her more than the contraction had.

She stopped moving.

Victoria glanced toward the driveway.

“Take us to the mall first.”

Ethan stared at her.

“The sale ends at five.”

For several seconds, nobody answered.

Somewhere outside, a lawn mower droned behind a neighboring fence.

Claire could hear it with absurd clarity.

She could also hear the refrigerator humming behind her and Madison’s thumbnail tapping against her phone case.

“You’re joking,” Ethan said.

Victoria’s expression barely changed.

“We have been waiting on you for twenty minutes.”

Claire almost laughed.

The sound reached her throat but never became anything.

She had spent those same twenty minutes upstairs changing from sweatpants into the cream maternity dress because Victoria had once told her that women who stopped making an effort during pregnancy should not be surprised when their husbands stopped noticing them.

Claire had not been going to the mall.

She had been getting dressed because Ethan was supposed to drive her to the hospital if the contractions became regular.

They had become regular.

Then they had become worse.

“Ethan, please.”

He took half a step toward her.

Victoria’s hand fell away from his chest.

For one brief moment Claire believed that was the end of it.

Then Victoria looked at him.

Nothing dramatic passed between them.

There was no command.

There did not need to be.

Claire had seen that look across Thanksgiving tables, at their wedding rehearsal dinner, and once in a car dealership when Ethan had nearly bought a model his mother considered impractical.

His shoulders changed before his face did.

They drew back slightly, as if he were preparing to defend a decision he had not yet made.

Claire reached him before she understood that he was retreating.

Her fingers closed around the sleeve of his suit jacket.

“Please,” she whispered.

He looked at her hand.

“Something’s wrong.”

The keys moved in his fist with a small metallic jingle.

“Claire.”

“Something is wrong.”

“I know you’re having contractions.”

“No, you don’t understand.”

“I do understand.”

His voice remained low, which somehow made it worse.

He pulled his sleeve free.

“Don’t move until I’m back.”

Claire stared at him.

The words did not fit inside anything she understood about marriage.

Behind Ethan, his father shifted his weight against the wall.

Richard had watched the entire exchange with his arms folded over his navy blazer.

“She can wait a few hours,” he said.

Claire turned her head toward him.

Richard looked uncomfortable only after she looked directly at him.

His gaze slid toward the driveway.

“First babies take forever.”

“Twins,” Claire said.

Richard frowned.

“What?”

“They’re twins.”

“I know that.”

“You just said first baby.”

“I meant first delivery.”

Victoria exhaled through her nose.

“This is getting ridiculous.”

Claire felt heat rise into her face.

She had been afraid of Victoria for almost six years, though she had never used that word even privately.

She called it keeping the peace.

She called it respecting Ethan’s family.

She called it choosing which battles mattered.

Now she was sitting on the floor at thirty-eight weeks pregnant while her husband’s mother discussed a department-store sale.

Another contraction began.

Claire felt it first in her lower back.

“No.”

Her fingers searched blindly for the counter.

“Wait.”

Ethan had already turned toward the door.

Claire dragged herself upward using the cabinet handle and the counter edge.

Her elbow struck the blue folder.

The folder dropped.

Its plastic cover slapped the hardwood and sprang open.

Insurance forms, test results, admission instructions, photocopied identification, and several pages from her obstetrician slid beneath the counter and across the entryway.

Claire made it onto one knee.

Then the contraction folded her forward.

Her palm struck the floor.

A sound escaped her that embarrassed her immediately.

Ethan stopped.

Madison finally lowered her phone.

“Jesus.”

Victoria looked over her shoulder.

Claire kept her eyes closed until the worst of the pressure eased.

When she opened them, a white sheet of paper lay beside her hand.

A red circle surrounded a line near the center.

DO NOT DELAY TRANSPORT.

Claire stared at the words.

May you like

She had seen them before.

Three days earlier, Dr. Patel had placed that sheet on top of the folder and made Ethan read it too.
