Chương 8

“I walked away because I was already becoming worse.”

Nobody interrupted.

Even the guards seemed to understand that whatever was happening between the brothers had existed long before tonight.

Lily watched Adrian’s face.

She had seen him negotiate million-dollar deals without blinking.

She had seen him threaten men twice his size.

She had seen him walk into rooms where everyone wanted him gone and make them remember why they feared him.

But this was different.

This was not a fight with an enemy.

This was a conversation with a part of himself he had buried.

“What did you do?” Adrian asked.

Evan took a slow breath.

“I found out our father wasn’t just building an empire.”

Adrian’s expression changed slightly.

Their father was a subject they avoided.

Not because they missed him.

Because every conversation about him ended with someone angry.

“He was building protection,” Evan continued.

“For what?”

“For the people above him.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

“You don’t want that to be true.”

“I know how this business works.”

Evan gave a tired look.

“You know how the visible part works.”

The words irritated Adrian because they sounded exactly like something he would say to someone else.

Evan continued.

“Our father spent years making deals, moving money, creating alliances.”

He paused.

“But he wasn’t the top.”

Marcus leaned against the table.

“How many people knew?”

Evan looked at him.

“Very few.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know all of them.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re telling me you uncovered some hidden organization controlling everything, but you don’t know who they are?”

“I’m telling you I found enough to know I was in danger.”

“And you thought disappearing would fix it?”

“No.”

Evan looked at him.

“I thought disappearing would keep you alive.”

The room went quiet.

Adrian looked away.

A small movement.

Almost nothing.

But Lily saw it.

The statement had reached somewhere Adrian did not want anyone to see.

“You could have told me,” Adrian said.

Evan laughed softly.

There was sadness in it.

“When?”

The question was simple.

“When you were rebuilding the company after Dad died?”

“When you were trying to prove everyone wrong?”

“When you were already sleeping three hours a night because you thought every problem had to be yours?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know me.”

“I know you better than anyone.”

“That’s not possible.”

“It is.”

Evan looked at him.

“Because I knew you before everyone started being afraid of you.”

The words landed differently.

Lily looked down.

She wondered how many people in Adrian’s life had known the man before the reputation.

Probably very few.

“You should have trusted me,” Adrian said.

Evan’s expression softened.

“I did.”

“Then why leave?”

“Because I trusted you enough to know what you would do.”

Adrian stared at him.

“You would have gone after them.”

“Yes.”

“You would have gotten yourself killed.”

“Yes.”

“And you still think that was protecting me?”

Evan nodded.

“Yes.”

The answer frustrated Adrian because there was no arrogance in it.

Only regret.

A loud crash came from somewhere above them.

Everyone reacted.

The guards moved toward the sound.

Adrian looked upward.

“The roof.”

Marcus immediately grabbed his phone.

“No signal.”

“Of course not,” Evan said.

Adrian looked at him.

“What?”

“They cut communications first.”

Marcus frowned.

“You’re saying this was planned.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Evan looked toward the security monitors.

The screens were still black.

“Long enough.”

Adrian walked to the control panel near the wall.

He opened the emergency access compartment.

Inside was a backup system.

Or it should have been.

The compartment was empty.

Someone had removed the hardware.

Adrian stared at the space.

A missing object.

A missing piece.

A missing certainty.

Lily came beside him.

“What is it?”

“The backup drive.”

“Was it important?”

“Yes.”

“How important?”

Adrian looked at her.

“Important enough that only three people knew where it was.”

She did not need to ask.

She already knew.

“Who?”

Adrian counted quietly.

“Me.”

“Caleb.”

“And Marcus.”

Marcus looked offended.

“I didn’t take it.”

“I know.”

The answer surprised him.

Adrian looked back at the empty compartment.

“Because if you did, you wouldn’t still be here.”

Marcus stared at him.

It was the closest thing to trust Adrian had offered all night.

It was also the first time Marcus seemed to believe Adrian was trying.

Evan stepped closer.

“What was on it?”

“Internal records.”

“Of what?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Everything.”

Evan’s expression changed.

“Then they have what they need.”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice became firm.

“They have what they think they need.”

The old confidence returned.

Not the false confidence.

Something quieter.

A decision.

Lily noticed.

“What are you going to do?”

Adrian looked around the room.

At the guards.

At Marcus.

At Evan.

Then finally at her.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Because he understood something he had avoided for years.

He could not solve this by controlling everyone around him.

He could not survive by knowing every secret before anyone else.

He needed people.

The realization seemed to bother him.

But he accepted it.

“We find Caleb.”

Marcus nodded.

“I can locate him.”

“No.”

Everyone looked at Adrian.

He continued.

“Not through company channels.”

“Why?”

“Because if he’s involved, he’ll know.”

Evan watched him.

“You’re learning.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Don’t make this emotional.”

A small smile appeared on Evan’s face.

“There he is.”

Lily almost smiled too.

Almost.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

A slow knock.

Three times.

Everyone froze.

Adrian looked toward the door.

Nobody spoke.

The private penthouse entrance had already been compromised.

The guards had already betrayed him.

Someone had already been inside.

And now someone was politely asking to come in.

Adrian stepped forward.

Lily reached for his arm.

He stopped.

Not because she pulled him back.

Because he allowed her to.

“Don’t,” she whispered.

Adrian looked at her.

For once, he did not pretend he was invincible.

“I have to know.”

The knock came again.

Three times.

May you like

Evan moved beside him.

Marcus stood behind them.
