Chương 2

The guard stopped.

Lily looked between them.

“You have another phone?”

Adrian did not answer.

That was answer enough.

He reached down beside the wheelchair and pulled out a small black device hidden beneath the cushion.

Lily stared at it.

“You told me you couldn’t reach anything.”

“I told everyone that.”

The words landed harder than he intended.

Lily slowly stood.

“You were pretending.”

Adrian watched her carefully.

“Yes.”

The silence that followed felt heavier than any accusation.

“You let everyone think you were helpless.”

“Yes.”

“Your doctors?”

“Yes.”

“Your employees?”

“Yes.”

“Me?”

That was the only question that mattered.

Adrian looked away.

Only for a second.

But Lily saw it.

And that hurt more than the lie.

“You tested me.”

“I needed to know.”

“No.”

Her voice changed.

Not louder.

Just colder.

“You needed control.”

Adrian looked back at her.

The guards remained still.

They had seen him face enemies with less tension than this.

“You think I enjoyed this?”

“I think you decided my feelings were something you could measure.”

“That isn’t what happened.”

“Then what happened?”

Adrian opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

For a man who always had an answer, the silence was unusual.

Lily looked toward the wheelchair.

The symbol of weakness.

The trap he had built around himself.

“You wanted to see who stayed.”

“Yes.”

“And if I failed?”

His expression hardened.

“I would have survived.”

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

Lily nodded slowly.

“Right.”

She stepped back.

Adrian noticed.

“Lily.”

She stopped.

He almost sounded like he was asking her not to go.

Almost.

Then another vibration came from the hidden phone.

This time, Adrian answered immediately.

He listened.

The color drained slightly from his face.

“What did you say?”

A pause.

The person on the other end spoke again.

Adrian’s eyes moved toward the guards.

Then toward Lily.

“Send me the file.”

He ended the call.

“What is it?” Lily asked.

Adrian did not respond.

He moved his hand to the wheel of the chair.

Then he stopped.

Slowly, he placed both hands on the armrests.

Lily watched as he pushed himself upward.

For a moment, her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

The man who had spent weeks being carried from room to room stood without hesitation.

The chair rolled backward behind him.

The guards lowered their heads immediately.

Adrian had not lost the ability to walk.

He had hidden it.

Lily stared at him.

The betrayal was too large to fit into one emotion.

“You could walk.”

Adrian straightened his shirt.

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled, but she refused to cry.

Not in front of him.

Not now.

“Why show me?”

His expression softened slightly.

Because despite everything, he hated seeing her hurt.

“I didn’t.”

The answer confused her.

“What?”

“I showed myself because someone just confirmed what I was afraid of.”

The penthouse suddenly felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

“What are you talking about?”

Adrian looked at the screen of his phone.

A document had arrived.

One page.

One signature.

One name.

His face changed when he saw it.

Not because he was surprised.

Because he was finally certain.

“Someone inside my organization helped arrange the attack.”

Lily went still.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“That’s the problem.”

He turned the phone toward her.

She looked at the name on the document.

Her breath caught.

It was someone they both knew.

Someone Adrian trusted.

Someone Lily had defended more than once.

Adrian watched the shock cross her face.

Then he looked toward the locked door.

“The people who wanted me gone weren’t outside this building.”

The guards moved closer.

Lily looked at Adrian, searching for the man she thought she knew.

She found him standing.

But she did not know if that meant he was stronger than before.

Or more dangerous.

Adrian picked up the wheelchair and pushed it aside.

The sound of it scraping across the floor echoed through the penthouse.

“Tonight,” he said, “we find out who was waiting for me to fall.”

And when the elevator bell rang from the private hallway, everyone in the room understood one thing.

Someone had come upstairs knowing Adrian Voss was supposed to be helpless.

Someone had come upstairs knowing Adrian Voss was supposed to be helpless.

The elevator doors opened with a quiet mechanical sound, and nobody in the penthouse moved.

Adrian stood beside the abandoned wheelchair, his body tense but controlled, while Lily remained frozen near the center of the room.

The guards reached for their weapons, but Adrian raised one finger before either man could take another step.

“Not yet,” he said.

His voice was calm, which somehow made the moment more dangerous.

Lily looked at him with a mixture of disbelief and anger.

“You knew this could happen.”

Adrian did not look away from the elevator.

“I suspected.”

“That’s different from knowing.”

“Yes.”

The honesty irritated her more than another lie would have.

The elevator numbers stopped changing.

Someone was on their way up.

Nobody in the room knew whether they were walking into a confrontation or a conversation.

Adrian picked up the hidden phone again and checked the document one more time.

The signature remained on the screen.

The name remained impossible.

Marcus Hale.

His chief operations director.

The man who had handled Adrian’s finances, security arrangements, and internal communications for almost nine years.

The man who had visited him in the hospital every morning after the shooting.

The man who had held Adrian’s hand during the first painful hours when nobody knew if he would wake up.

Lily noticed the way Adrian stared at the name.

“You trusted him.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“I trusted him with things I wouldn’t trust most people with.”

“That’s why this hurts.”

His eyes moved toward her.

She regretted saying it the moment she saw his expression.

Not because it was wrong.

Because it was true.

Adrian Voss could handle enemies.

Enemies followed rules.

They wanted something from him, and they made that desire obvious.
