Chương 3

Betrayal from someone close was different.

It forced him to question every memory attached to that person.

The elevator doors opened.

A man stepped out wearing a gray suit with no tie, his dark hair slightly disordered, his face showing exhaustion rather than fear.

Marcus Hale stopped when he saw Adrian standing.

For one second, surprise crossed his face.

It was small.

Almost invisible.

But Adrian saw it.

Lily saw it too.

Marcus recovered quickly.

“Adrian.”

Nobody answered.

Marcus looked around the room.

His eyes landed on the wheelchair.

Then on Lily.

Then back to Adrian.

“You’re walking.”

Adrian gave a quiet nod.

“That seems to surprise you.”

Marcus let out a slow breath.

“I thought the doctors were right.”

“The doctors were told what I wanted them to believe.”

Marcus stared at him.

Then he laughed once, without humor.

“You did this to everyone?”

“Almost everyone.”

A silence passed between them.

Marcus stepped forward carefully.

“I came because you called.”

“I didn’t call.”

Marcus stopped.

The words changed something in his face.

“Then who did?”

Adrian watched him closely.

“That’s what I’m trying to find out.”

Marcus looked at the guards.

“They’re armed.”

“They usually are.”

“Against me?”

“Should they be?”

The question sat between them.

Marcus looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

That bothered Adrian more than anger would have.

Because if Marcus was pretending, he was very good at it.

And if he was not pretending, then Adrian had spent years learning the wrong person.

“I spent three weeks listening to people talk about replacing you,” Marcus said.

His voice became quieter.

“I spent three weeks watching men who owed you everything suddenly discuss what they would do after you were gone.”

Adrian said nothing.

“I defended you.”

“Did you?”

Marcus looked at him.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“It means I found a file with your signature attached to a transfer request connected to the night I was shot.”

The change was immediate.

Marcus’s face lost color.

Lily noticed.

Adrian noticed her noticing.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

The response was too fast.

Too automatic.

“I didn’t sign anything like that.”

Adrian held up the phone.

“Then explain it.”

Marcus did not move closer.

He looked at the screen from where he stood.

His expression shifted from confusion to something closer to fear.

Not fear of Adrian.

Fear of what the document represented.

“Where did you get that?”

“Answer the question.”

Marcus rubbed a hand across his face.

A habit.

Adrian remembered it.

Marcus had done the same thing during difficult negotiations, whenever a deal started falling apart.

It was one of the reasons Adrian had trusted him.

Marcus always looked like a man carrying too much responsibility.

“You need to understand something.”

“I need answers.”

“You need to know that document does not prove what you think it proves.”

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“That sounds like something someone says when they don’t want to explain.”

Marcus looked toward Lily.

“Is she supposed to be here for this?”

The question surprised her.

“Excuse me?”

Marcus ignored her.

“This is family business.”

Lily stepped back slightly.

Adrian noticed.

“She stays.”

Marcus looked between them.

“Adrian.”

“She stays.”

The second time sounded less like a request.

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Fine.”

He looked down.

“The transfer request was real.”

The guards immediately shifted.

Lily’s breathing changed.

Adrian remained still.

“Continue.”

“But it wasn’t to fund the attack.”

Marcus looked up.

“It was to move money away from you.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought someone was going to kill you.”

The answer created a silence nobody expected.

Adrian stared at him.

“You moved my money without telling me because you thought I was going to die.”

“Yes.”

“That is not your decision to make.”

“No.”

Marcus swallowed.

“But someone had to make one.”

The elevator behind him remained open.

Nobody had noticed it.

A small detail.

A mistake.

Adrian noticed everything now.

“Who else knows about the transfer?”

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation mattered.

“Marcus.”

“One person.”

“Who?”

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Your brother.”

The room changed.

Lily had heard stories about Adrian’s family.

Not many.

Adrian rarely spoke about them.

But she knew enough to recognize the name.

Evan Voss.

The younger brother who had disappeared from the family business years earlier.

The one people said Adrian had protected.

The one Adrian never mentioned.

“That’s impossible,” Adrian said.

The words were quiet.

Not because he doubted Marcus.

Because the possibility itself disturbed him.

Marcus looked at him carefully.

“You knew he contacted me.”

“No.”

“Then you didn’t know as much as you thought.”

Adrian’s face closed.

Lily watched the exchange and realized something uncomfortable.

For the first time since she met Adrian, he looked uncertain.

Not weak.

Not helpless.

Uncertain.

And that was more frightening.

A knock came from the hallway.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone turned.

The guards raised their weapons.

Adrian looked at the door.

“No one else was cleared for this floor tonight.”

Marcus stared at him.

“That’s not true.”

Adrian looked back.

“What do you mean?”

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“Someone changed the security schedule two hours ago.”

The room went silent again.

“Who?”

Marcus did not answer immediately.

Then he looked at the guards.

Not at Adrian.

Not at Lily.

At the guards.

“Your security team.”

The two men exchanged a glance.

It lasted less than a second.

But it was enough.

Adrian saw it.

So did Lily.

One of the guards stepped backward.

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“Drop your weapon.”

The guard did not.

The other guard moved first.

Everything happened too quickly for fear to catch up.

Marcus grabbed Lily’s arm and pulled her away from the open space.

Adrian moved toward the side table, reaching for the small knife hidden beneath it.

The guard closest to the door raised his weapon.

Then stopped.

Because Adrian was no longer the injured man everyone expected.

May you like

He was standing in front of him.

And everyone in the room finally understood the truth Adrian had been hiding.
