Chương 8

Elena looked at her.

"Things people do not want noticed."

The answer made Mara uncomfortable.

"What did Tessa notice?"

Elena looked back at Daniel.

"Did you find out about her?"

Daniel nodded.

"Some."

"Then you know she filed a complaint."

Mara glanced between them.

"A complaint about what?"

Daniel did not answer.

He let Elena decide.

Elena looked down.

"About workers being pressured to do things outside their jobs."

Mara remembered the banquet.

The uniform.

The false name.

The tray in her hands.

Her stomach tightened.

"Like me?"

Elena's eyes closed briefly.

"Yes."

The word was quiet.

But it hurt.

Daniel placed his hands flat on the table.

"What happened after she filed it?"

Elena looked at him.

"Nothing."

"Nothing?"

"Not officially."

She gave a small, bitter laugh.

"People said they would investigate."

"What did the investigation find?"

"That there was not enough evidence."

Daniel looked disappointed, but not surprised.

Mara noticed that.

"Did Tessa leave?"

Elena nodded.

"She was fired two weeks later."

"Why?"

"They said it was unrelated."

Nobody spoke.

Mara looked at the people around them.

A man reading a newspaper.

A woman typing on a laptop.

A teenager laughing with friends.

Everyone had a normal day.

She wondered how many people carried old unfair things around while pretending they did not.

"How does this connect to tonight?" Daniel asked.

Elena looked at the folder.

"I don't know."

"But you think it does."

Elena did not answer.

Daniel waited.

Finally she said, "Tessa was not the kind of person who would use my name."

"Why?"

"Because she hated that kind of thing."

Mara noticed the past tense.

"Where is she now?"

Elena looked away.

"I don't know."

Daniel opened his folder again.

"The address attached to the schedule entry was her old address."

"Old?"

"Yes."

"That means someone who had access to old records could have used it."

Daniel nodded.

"Or someone who wanted us to notice it."

Mara frowned.

"Why would someone leave a clue?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Sometimes people leave clues because they are careless."

He paused.

"Sometimes they leave them because they want someone to follow them."

Mara did not like that answer.

It made the whole situation feel bigger.

Not just a bad person making a bad choice.

Something planned.

After the meeting, Daniel walked them home.

Elena argued that it was unnecessary.

Daniel agreed it might be.

He still did it.

Mara noticed that adults often said one thing and did another when they were worried.

At the apartment, Elena went straight to the kitchen.

She started washing dishes that were already clean.

Mara watched from the doorway.

"Mom."

Elena kept scrubbing.

"What?"

"You do it again."

"What?"

"Clean when you are scared."

The sponge stopped moving.

For a moment, Elena looked embarrassed.

Then she smiled a little.

"I guess I do."

"You could just be scared."

Elena looked at her.

"What?"

"You don't have to fix everything."

The words sounded strange coming from Mara.

She knew that.

Her mother knew it too.

Elena sat down at the table.

"I don't know how to do that."

Mara sat across from her.

"I don't either."

They stayed there quietly.

No dramatic conversation.

No promises.

Just two people admitting something they usually avoided.

Later that evening, Daniel called.

Elena answered in the kitchen while Mara pretended to do homework.

She listened without trying to.

At least that was what she told herself.

"Are you sure?"

Elena's voice changed.

"What does that mean?"

A pause.

"No, I understand."

Another pause.

"Then what happens now?"

Mara looked up.

Her mother was staring at the floor.

After the call ended, she did not move.

"What happened?" Mara asked.

Elena sat down slowly.

"Daniel found someone who worked with Calvin."

"Who?"

"A manager."

"Is she going to tell the truth?"

Elena gave a tired smile.

"People do not usually make things that simple."

The next morning, Daniel met them outside the apartment building.

He looked like he had slept very little.

Mara noticed because his shirt was slightly wrinkled.

The first time she had seen him, everything about him looked controlled.

Now he looked like a person who had spent the night arguing with problems that did not answer back.

"I need you both to know something," he said.

Elena immediately became cautious.

"What?"

"The person I spoke with confirmed that Calvin has used temporary workers before."

Mara felt a flash of anger.

"Then why is he still doing it?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Because confirmation is not the same as accountability."

She frowned.

"I hate that."

"I know."

"No, you don't."

Daniel was quiet.

Mara immediately regretted saying it.

But he did not get offended.

He simply nodded.

"You're right."

That surprised her.

"How?"

"Because I am not twelve years old and afraid that adults are going to decide what happens to my family."

Mara looked down.

She had expected him to defend himself.

Instead, he admitted something.

That made him harder to dislike.

Daniel continued.

"The manager who spoke with me gave me information about the staffing process."

"What information?" Elena asked.

"She said Calvin sometimes created unofficial roles for events."

"Unofficial?"

"People who worked but were not always recorded properly."

Elena's expression tightened.

"Why would she tell you now?"

Daniel looked at the building behind them.

"Because she quit last night."

Mara looked up.

"Why?"

"Because she said seeing what happened with your daughter made her realize she had spent years convincing herself small things were not connected."

Elena was silent.

Mara wondered if that was how problems survived.

Not because nobody saw them.

Because everyone saw one piece and decided it was not enough.

Daniel handed Elena an envelope.

"What is this?"

"The contact information she gave me."

Elena did not open it.

"Why me?"

"Because she specifically asked to speak with you."

Elena looked afraid again.

Not of the woman.

Of what the conversation might bring back.

"Do I have to?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

May you like

The answer came immediately.

"You do not have to do anything you are not ready to do."
