Chương 5

"I know."

For a while they sat there.

Then Daniel approached.

He had his coat over one arm.

"I arranged a ride home."

Elena immediately shook her head.

"We can take the bus."

"It is late."

"We are fine."

Daniel looked at her.

Not offended.

Just understanding.

"You don't like owing people."

Elena gave a small, tired laugh.

"I don't like needing people."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand."

Mara looked between them.

She wondered how many adults built entire personalities around things that hurt them.

Daniel handed Elena a card.

"This is my personal number."

Elena looked at it but did not take it immediately.

"If you need anything related to tonight."

"Only tonight?"

Daniel paused.

It was a simple question.

But it changed something.

"I don't know yet."

Elena accepted the card.

That honesty seemed to matter.

As they walked toward the car waiting at the curb, Mara noticed Calvin standing near the entrance.

He was talking with one of the security employees.

When he saw them leave, his expression changed.

Not anger.

Not exactly.

Something colder.

Mara stopped walking.

Daniel noticed.

"What is it?"

She pointed.

"He knows."

Daniel looked toward Calvin.

"He knows what?"

"That I found the paper."

Daniel watched Calvin for several seconds.

Then he looked back at Mara.

"Are you sure?"

Mara nodded.

She was not sure how she knew.

She just knew.

Calvin looked away first.

That was the moment Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed almost immediately.

"Who is this?"

A pause.

Then another.

Mara watched him listen.

"Send me a copy."

He ended the call.

Elena stepped closer.

"What happened?"

Daniel looked at the three of them.

"The staffing records were changed before I arrived."

Mara felt her stomach tighten.

"Changed how?"

Daniel looked toward the building behind them.

"The person who was listed as working tonight was not your mother."

Elena frowned.

"Then who was?"

Daniel did not answer right away.

Because whatever he had learned was not something he wanted to say in front of Mara.

That was what scared her most.

Finally he said, "Someone using your name was added to the schedule."

Elena went still.

And for the first time that night, Mara saw her mother look truly afraid.

Elena went still.

For several seconds, she looked like she had forgotten where she was standing.

The traffic, the voices, the doors opening behind them, all of it seemed to move farther away.

"Using my name?" she said.

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Someone created a record showing you were scheduled to work tonight."

"But I wasn't."

"That's the problem."

Elena looked back at the building.

Her face had changed from fear into something harder.

Not anger exactly.

Something closer to recognition.

"Mara," she said quietly.

Mara looked at her.

"What?"

"Go sit in the car."

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Elena closed her eyes.

"Please."

Mara hated that word from her mother.

Please meant she was scared.

Please meant she needed something and did not want to admit it.

"I want to know."

Elena looked like she wanted to argue.

Then she stopped.

Maybe because she knew Mara had already heard too much.

Maybe because she knew pretending children could be protected from adult problems was no longer possible.

Daniel opened the passenger door of the waiting car.

"She can stay."

Elena looked at him.

"She's a child."

"Yes."

"Then she shouldn't have to hear this."

Daniel looked toward the banquet hall.

"She already had to live it."

The words were gentle, but they carried weight.

Elena did not respond.

She sat down beside Mara instead.

The three of them stayed near the curb while Daniel called the person who had sent the staffing information.

This time, he put the call on speaker only after asking.

A woman's voice answered.

"Mr. Cross?"

"Yes."

"This is Nina from the event management office."

"Tell me exactly what you found."

There was a pause.

Mara could hear papers moving.

"The staff list was uploaded at three fourteen this afternoon."

"By whom?"

"We are checking that."

Daniel's voice remained calm.

"That is not an answer."

Nina exhaled.

"The account used belongs to the catering company."

"Calvin Reed?"

"Yes."

Elena looked down.

Mara saw her mother's hand close around the card Daniel had given her.

"Who was added?" Daniel asked.

Another pause.

"Nina."

"I know."

"An employee named Elena Alvarez."

Elena looked up.

"That's me."

"Yes," Nina said.

"Except the listed age field was incorrect."

Mara felt a chill move through her.

"What age?" Daniel asked.

Nina hesitated.

"Twelve."

Nobody spoke.

Even the woman on the phone seemed to understand that the silence meant something.

Daniel looked at Mara.

Then at Elena.

"Did you enter that information?"

"No," Nina said.

"Can you confirm?"

"I can confirm the account activity."

"Can you confirm who used it?"

"No."

There it was again.

The same frustrating wall.

Someone had done something.

Something wrong.

But knowing something happened was not the same as knowing who did it.

Daniel thanked Nina and ended the call.

Elena stared at the ground.

"They made it look like I brought her."

Mara heard the hurt in her voice.

Not because Elena believed the lie.

Because someone had built a lie using her.

"They wanted someone to blame," Daniel said.

Elena shook her head.

"No."

Daniel looked at her.

"They wanted someone who needed the money."

The sentence landed quietly.

Mara looked at her mother.

She thought about all the times Elena had said they were fine when they were not.

All the times she had repaired things instead of replacing them.

All the times she had turned old clothes inside out and called them new.

Needing money was not a crime.

But some people acted like it was.

Daniel walked a few steps away to make another call.

Mara leaned against the car door.

"Mom."

Elena did not answer immediately.

"I'm sorry."

Mara frowned.

"For what?"

"For bringing you."

"You didn't make them do that."

May you like

"No."

Elena looked at the building.
