Chương 2

Before Daniel could ask anything else, Calvin appeared.

"Mr. Cross," he said with a practiced smile.

The change in him was immediate.

The same man who had ordered Mara around now looked respectful.

"Everything all right?"

Daniel looked at him.

"No."

Calvin's smile stayed in place, but something behind it moved.

"Excuse me?"

"I asked the girl a question."

"She's just helping out."

"She's twelve."

Calvin glanced at Mara as if she had caused the problem.

"Her mother agreed."

Daniel did not raise his voice.

That made the moment more uncomfortable.

"Did her mother agree to her working a full banquet under a false name?"

Calvin's jaw tightened.

"You are making an assumption."

"And you are avoiding an answer."

Several guests nearby had started paying attention.

Some looked uncomfortable.

Some looked annoyed that the evening was being interrupted.

A man at the table closest to them leaned toward his wife and whispered that there were always misunderstandings at large events.

Mara hated that phrase.

Misunderstanding was what adults called things when they did not want to decide who was responsible.

Daniel turned back to her.

"Go find your mother."

Mara hesitated.

"She'll lose the job."

Daniel's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked less like a powerful person and more like someone who had heard something painful.

"Who told you that?"

Mara looked down.

Nobody had told her exactly.

She had just watched enough people lose things to understand how the world worked.

Before she could answer, the kitchen doors opened.

Elena stepped out carrying a stack of empty plates.

She stopped when she saw Daniel.

Then she saw Calvin.

Then she saw Mara standing in the middle of the ballroom.

Her face changed before she spoke.

"Mara."

The fear in her mother's voice was worse than anger.

Mara put the tray down on a nearby table.

One glass tipped and spilled champagne across the white cloth.

Nobody cared about the stain.

Not anymore.

Elena walked toward her quickly.

"What happened?"

Mara opened her mouth.

No words came.

She had spent the whole night trying not to make things worse.

Now she could not figure out how to explain that staying quiet had become the thing making everything worse.

Calvin stepped forward.

"Elena, your daughter was causing a scene."

Daniel looked at him.

"That is not what happened."

Calvin's eyes hardened.

"Mr. Cross, with respect, you don't know the situation."

Daniel looked around the room.

The donors, the staff, the cameras set up for the charity presentation.

Everyone was watching now.

"Then explain it."

Calvin said nothing.

That silence was the first thing Mara saw that made her believe maybe powerful people could be afraid too.

Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.

He did not call anyone.

He simply held it in his hand.

"I want the employment records for tonight's staff," he said.

Calvin's face changed.

"Why?"

"Because I want to know who was scheduled to work."

The question hung there.

Mara watched Calvin glance toward the kitchen.

It was quick.

Almost invisible.

But she saw it.

And she knew something had just changed.

Calvin's glance toward the kitchen lasted only a moment, but Daniel noticed it too.

"Who is in there?" Daniel asked.

Calvin gave a small laugh that sounded more nervous than amused.

"The kitchen staff?"

"That's not what I asked."

The room had grown quieter, though not completely silent.

A waiter carrying a tray of appetizers walked past them without looking over.

Mara watched him keep his eyes forward, and she wondered how many people had learned to survive by pretending not to see things.

Elena reached for Mara's hand.

Her fingers were cold.

"Mr. Cross," Elena said, "please don't make this worse."

Daniel looked at her.

"I am trying to understand what happened."

"I know."

The way Elena said it made Mara realize her mother was not defending Calvin.

She was afraid of what happened when people like Calvin lost control.

Daniel lowered his phone slightly.

"How long has your daughter been working tonight?"

Elena looked at Mara.

Mara looked away.

"She was only supposed to help before the event," Elena said.

"Help how?"

Elena hesitated.

That hesitation carried more truth than an answer.

Calvin stepped in.

"She is not an employee."

Daniel turned toward him.

"Then why was she wearing a uniform?"

"Because we needed extra hands."

"That sounds like work."

Calvin's expression tightened.

"You are turning a simple favor into something it is not."

Daniel studied him.

"Maybe."

The uncertainty in that answer seemed to bother Calvin more than anger would have.

People were used to arguing with anger.

They were less prepared for someone calmly refusing to accept their version of events.

A woman from the charity board approached carefully.

Her name was Rebecca Hall, and Mara recognized her from the stage presentation earlier.

Rebecca had spent ten minutes talking about compassion and community.

Now she looked uncomfortable standing near a child who had become the center of attention.

"Daniel," Rebecca said quietly, "can we handle this privately?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Privately is how things like this usually stay hidden."

Rebecca's face changed.

Not because she disagreed.

Because she knew he had a point.

Mara wished everyone would stop talking about her as if she were a problem sitting in the middle of the room.

She wanted to disappear into the kitchen, find her mother, and go home.

But she also wanted someone to say clearly that what happened was wrong.

Both feelings existed at the same time, and she hated that they could.

A server came over and whispered something to Calvin.

His eyes moved toward the hallway leading to the staff entrance.

Then he looked back at Daniel.

"We should continue this conversation somewhere else."

"No."

The answer was immediate.

Calvin stopped.

Daniel pointed toward the ballroom.

"This happened here."

The words were not loud.

They did not need to be.

May you like

Mara noticed people were beginning to take out their phones.

That frightened her more than Calvin's anger.
