Chương 7
She paused.
"He was trying to tell you who caused her disappearance."
Emma looked at David.
Then back at Margaret.
"Who?"
Margaret's lips parted.
But before she could answer, a loud sound came from outside.
Everyone turned toward the window.
A car had stopped in front of the house.
Nobody moved.
The vehicle was unfamiliar.
The engine remained running.
David immediately stepped in front of Emma and Lily.
"Stay back."
The front door did not open.
Nobody came to the house.
But then Emma's phone vibrated again.
Another message.
One sentence.
The truth about Rachel was never hidden by your grandfather.
Emma opened the message.
Her hands trembled.
The next line appeared.
It was hidden by the person you call your mother.
Emma stared at the screen.
The person she had spent her life believing was her safest place had suddenly become another unanswered question.
Margaret looked at her face.
And she knew exactly what Emma had just read.
Because the older woman whispered the words Emma was afraid to say.
"Someone is trying to make you hate her."
Emma looked toward the window.
The unknown car was still waiting outside.
And somewhere beyond the glass was the person who knew the truth about her family.
The person who had been pulling invisible strings for thirty years.
Do you want the next scene focused on confronting Emma’s mother or uncovering the caller’s identity?
The car outside remained still, its dark windows reflecting the afternoon sunlight.
Emma could see her own frightened face reflected in the glass.
For a moment, she wondered if the person inside was watching her.
Waiting.
Knowing exactly how much her world had just fallen apart.
David slowly moved toward the window.
"Do you recognize the car?"
Emma shook her head.
"No."
Margaret stood behind them, holding onto the back of the sofa for support.
Her eyes never left the vehicle.
"Maybe they are here because they know we found out."
Emma turned toward her.
"Who is they?"
Margaret looked down.
And that small movement answered more than words could.
"You know."
Margaret's face tightened.
"I know who might be involved."
Emma stepped closer.
"Then tell me."
The older woman looked exhausted.
"I spent thirty years trying to convince myself that silence was the only way to keep you safe."
She looked at Emma.
"But maybe silence was what allowed this to continue."
David glanced toward the door.
"We can't stand here waiting."
He reached for his phone.
"I'm calling someone."
Emma looked at him.
"Who?"
"The police."
Margaret immediately reacted.
"No."
David stopped.
"No?"
Margaret shook her head.
"Not yet."
Emma stared at her.
"Why?"
Margaret's voice dropped.
"Because if the person outside is connected to this, we need to know what they want."
David looked frustrated.
"This isn't a game."
"I know."
Margaret's eyes moved toward Lily.
"I know exactly what is at stake."
Emma looked at her daughter.
The thought of someone connected to this secret being near Lily made her entire body tense.
She walked over and gently picked up the baby.
Lily rested against her shoulder, unaware of the fear around her.
Emma held her tighter.
"I don't care about protecting the family name anymore."
Her voice was quiet but firm.
"I don't care about old promises."
She looked at Margaret.
"I care about my daughter."
Margaret nodded slowly.
"And that is exactly what Rachel would have wanted."
Emma froze.
"Don't say her name like you knew her."
The words came out harsher than she intended.
But Margaret accepted them.
"I deserve that."
A sudden knock interrupted them.
Everyone stopped.
The sound was not aggressive.
Not threatening.
Just three slow knocks against the front door.
David immediately stepped between Emma and the entrance.
Margaret looked terrified.
Emma held Lily closer.
Another knock came.
Then a voice from outside.
"Emma Carter?"
Nobody answered.
The voice continued.
"My name is Daniel Reeves."
Margaret's face changed instantly.
She whispered.
"No."
David noticed.
"You know him?"
Margaret looked frozen.
"Yes."
Emma's eyes narrowed.
"Who is he?"
Margaret did not answer.
The voice came again.
"I know you have questions about Rachel."
Emma looked toward the door.
The stranger knew exactly why they were afraid.
"I also know Margaret has not told you everything."
Margaret closed her eyes.
Emma looked at her.
"Is he telling the truth?"
Margaret remained silent.
That silence hurt more than the stranger's words.
David unlocked his phone.
"I am calling the police."
But before he could press the button, Margaret spoke.
"Wait."
David looked at her.
"Why?"
Margaret stared at the door.
"Because Daniel Reeves was your grandfather's attorney."
Emma felt a cold wave move through her.
"The lawyer."
Margaret nodded.
"The one who created the documents."
David lowered his phone slightly.
"Why would he come here now?"
Margaret whispered.
"Because he knows something."
Emma looked toward the door.
"Then we hear him."
David looked at her.
"Emma."
"I need answers."
She handed Lily to David.
Then she walked toward the entrance.
David followed close behind.
Margaret stayed several steps back.
Emma unlocked the door but did not open it fully.
A man in his late sixties stood outside.
He wore a dark coat and held an old leather briefcase.
His expression was serious, but not threatening.
He looked past Emma and saw Margaret.
For a moment, regret crossed his face.
"Margaret."
The older woman looked away.
"Daniel."
Emma studied him.
"You know why you are here."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
"Then tell me."
He looked at her carefully.
"You are Rachel's daughter."
Emma felt the words again.
Even after hearing them, they still felt impossible.
"Why did you wait thirty years to tell me?"
Daniel looked down.
"Because I was a coward."
The honesty surprised her.
"I helped create the lie."
Margaret looked at him.
"You helped my father."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
Emma's anger rose.
"You knew?"
Daniel looked at her.
"I knew parts of the truth."
"Parts?"
May you like
He sighed.
"Your grandfather hired me to prepare legal documents that would make it appear everything was handled properly."
