Chương 1

""I trusted you with my baby... I never thought I would find this."

Emma Carter's voice trembled as she stood at the entrance of the living room, her hand gripping her phone so tightly that her knuckles turned pale.

For a moment, the entire house seemed frozen.

The bright afternoon sunlight still poured through the large windows, warming the white carpet and beige sofa, but the peaceful family room no longer felt safe.

On the floor beside the coffee table, six-month-old Lily rested on her soft white blanket, making tiny sounds as she reached for her favorite stuffed rabbit.

Across from her, Margaret, Emma's mother-in-law, slowly turned around with a confused expression spreading across her face.

Her hand was still hovering near the baby's toy.

"Emma?" Margaret whispered.

The older woman's voice carried surprise, not anger.

"What are you talking about?"

Emma stepped closer, her eyes fixed on the phone screen in her hand.

She had replayed the recording so many times that she could still hear every second of it in her mind.

The sound of her own home.

The sound of someone she trusted.

The sound of a secret she never expected to uncover.

"I found something on this phone," Emma said quietly.

Her voice was no longer filled with accusation alone.

Now there was fear underneath it.

Margaret looked toward Lily, then back at Emma.

Her eyebrows tightened as she tried to understand what was happening.

"You know I would never hurt her," Margaret said.

Her hands slowly lifted in front of her body, trembling slightly.

"You know how much I love that little girl."

Emma swallowed hard.

That was the part that hurt the most.

Because she did know.

For the last six months, Margaret had been the person who brought homemade meals when Emma was exhausted.

She had stayed awake with Lily during difficult nights.

She had cried when she first held her granddaughter.

She had looked at Lily like she was the greatest gift she had ever received.

But now Emma was standing there with a recording that made everything feel different.

The wooden staircase behind them stood silently in the background, surrounded by family photographs showing years of happy memories.

Pictures of birthdays.

Pictures of vacations.

Pictures of a family that looked impossible to break.

Emma looked at one of those photographs for a second.

Then she looked away.

"Then explain this," she whispered.

Margaret's face changed.

The confusion became worry.

"What did you find?"

Before Emma could answer, footsteps echoed from the hallway.

David Carter walked into the room holding a set of car keys.

The 38-year-old father stopped immediately when he saw the expressions on their faces.

His calm expression disappeared.

He looked at his wife.

Then at his mother.

Then at the baby on the blanket.

"What happened?" David asked.

Neither woman answered at first.

The silence was heavier than any argument.

David slowly stepped closer.

"Emma?"

Emma looked at him, and for the first time, he saw how frightened she really was.

Not angry.

Not simply upset.

Terrified.

"I found a recording," she said.

David's eyes moved to the phone in her hand.

"A recording of what?"

Emma hesitated.

That small pause told him everything.

Whatever was on that phone was something neither of them was prepared to hear.

Margaret shook her head slowly.

"I don't understand any of this."

Her voice became softer.

"Emma, please tell me what you think you found."

Emma looked down at Lily.

The baby smiled slightly, completely unaware of the pain filling the room around her.

That innocent expression made Emma's heart break even more.

"I heard someone talking about Lily," Emma said.

David's face changed instantly.

"Talking about Lily?"

Margaret stepped backward.

"No."

The word came out almost like a whisper.

"No, Emma, whatever you heard, there has to be an explanation."

Emma pressed the phone screen.

The red recording indicator was still visible.

The small light seemed almost impossible to ignore.

"I wanted to believe that," Emma said.

The room became quiet again.

A soft melody from the baby monitor played faintly from the kitchen.

The refrigerator hummed.

A clock on the wall ticked slowly.

Normal sounds in a moment that no longer felt normal.

David moved closer.

"Let me see the recording."

Emma looked at him carefully.

"You need to hear it."

David nodded.

He reached for the phone.

Margaret watched him with worried eyes.

She looked less like someone hiding a secret and more like someone watching her family fall apart.

David pressed play.

For a few seconds, only quiet room sounds came through the speaker.

A chair moving.

Footsteps.

The soft sound of Lily making baby noises.

Then a woman's voice appeared.

The three adults immediately recognized the voice.

It was Margaret.

Emma watched David's face carefully.

She wanted to see his reaction.

She wanted proof that she was not imagining what she had heard.

The recording continued.

Margaret's voice sounded emotional.

Almost desperate.

"I don't know how much longer I can keep this from her."

Emma's breathing stopped.

David looked at Margaret.

Margaret covered her mouth.

"No," she whispered.

The recording continued.

"I just wish Emma knew the truth before someone else tells her."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

She looked at Margaret like she was seeing a stranger.

"What truth?" she asked.

Margaret stared at the phone.

Her expression changed from confusion to pain.

"I can explain."

But David raised his hand slightly.

"Wait."

His voice was calm, but his eyes were filled with shock.

The recording was not finished.

The three of them listened.

Margaret's voice came through again.

"I promised I would protect this family, but I never promised I would pretend everything was okay."

Emma felt her stomach tighten.

The words sounded like a confession.

Like a hidden betrayal.

Like something that could destroy everything they knew.

But then another sound appeared in the recording.

A man's voice.

Everyone in the room froze.

May you like

It was not David.

It was not anyone they recognized.
