Chương 2

Emma looked at Margaret.
Margaret looked at David.
David looked at the phone.
The unknown voice spoke quietly.
"You can't hide what happened forever."
The recording stopped.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The baby began making soft sounds from the blanket, bringing them back to the room.
David slowly lowered the phone.
"Who was that man?"
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
She looked toward Lily.
Then toward Emma.
Then she whispered the words that changed everything.
"I was trying to protect you."
Emma shook her head.
"Protect me from what?"
Margaret opened her mouth, but no words came out.
Her hands trembled as she looked at the little girl lying peacefully on the blanket.
David stepped between them, his voice low and serious.
"Mom, we need the truth."
Margaret closed her eyes.
A single tear moved down her cheek.
"I never wanted you to find out this way."
Emma felt her anger slowly turning into confusion.
The recording had made her believe she knew what was happening.
But now she was no longer sure.
She looked at her daughter.
She looked at the woman she thought had betrayed her.
She looked at her husband, who was standing between two people he loved.
And for the first time, she wondered if the secret she discovered was not what she thought it was.
Margaret reached into the pocket of her cardigan.
Her fingers shook as she pulled out an old folded photograph.
"I kept this because I was afraid of what would happen if you knew."
Emma stared at the photograph.
David moved closer.
The three of them looked down at the faded picture together.
The image showed a young woman holding a newborn baby.
A baby wearing the same small white bracelet Lily wore the day she came home from the hospital.
Emma's heart began racing.
"Why do you have that?"
Margaret looked directly into her eyes.
And with a broken voice, she answered.
"Because that baby was connected to a truth your family buried before you were ever born."
Emma stared at the photograph.
And with a broken voice, she answered.
"Because that baby was connected to a truth your family buried before you were ever born."
Emma felt the room shift around her.
The words did not make sense, yet somehow they felt heavier than anything she had heard before.
She slowly reached for the photograph, but Margaret held it tightly for one more second.
Not because she wanted to hide it.
Because letting go meant accepting that the secret she had protected for decades was finally exposed.
"Margaret," David said quietly.
His voice carried a warning, but also a plea.
"Give us the picture."
The older woman looked at him.
Her eyes were filled with exhaustion.
"I never wanted this day to come."
Emma's breathing became uneven.
"Why are you talking like you knew this would happen?"
Margaret lowered her hand.
The photograph moved between them.
"I knew eventually someone would find out."
Emma took the picture.
The paper was old and slightly worn at the edges.
The young woman in the photograph looked familiar, but Emma could not understand why.
She stared at the newborn baby in the woman's arms.
The small bracelet around the baby's wrist had a tiny silver charm attached to it.
A charm shaped like a star.
Emma looked down at Lily.
The same bracelet was hanging from the diaper bag beside the blanket.
Her face went pale.
"Where did this come from?"
Margaret looked toward the baby.
"Your father gave it to you when you were born."
Emma froze.
The room became completely silent.
"My father?"
She looked up slowly.
"What does my father have to do with this?"
Margaret sat down on the edge of the beige sofa.
For the first time since Emma entered the room, she looked older than 58.
She looked like someone carrying a weight she had been unable to put down for years.
"Your father made a promise."
Emma tightened her grip on the photograph.
"A promise about what?"
Margaret looked at David.
Then back at Emma.
"About keeping you safe."
Emma shook her head.
"I don't understand."
David stepped closer to his mother.
"Mom, what are you saying?"
Margaret looked at him with sadness.
"I'm saying there are things about Emma's childhood that she was never told."
Emma felt a cold feeling move through her chest.
"My childhood?"
She almost laughed, but there was no humor in it.
"You are telling me that my whole family has been hiding something from me?"
"No," Margaret said quickly.
Her voice cracked.
"Not from you."
She paused.
"Because of you."
Emma looked away.
The distinction did not make the pain disappear.
For years, she had believed she knew her family.
She believed she understood where she came from.
She believed the people around her were exactly who they appeared to be.
Now every memory felt like it had a missing piece.
"Who is the woman in the picture?" Emma asked.
Margaret looked down.
"Her name was Rachel."
The name meant nothing to Emma.
"Who was Rachel?"
Margaret's fingers touched the edge of the photograph.
"She was someone your father loved before he met your mother."
Emma blinked.
The information felt strange, but not impossible.
Everyone had a past.
But Margaret's expression told her this was not just an old relationship.
"Then why is there a baby?"
David looked confused.
His eyes moved between his wife and his mother.
"Mom, what are you not telling us?"
Margaret took a deep breath.
"Rachel had a baby."
Emma felt her heart begin beating faster.
"And?"
Margaret looked directly at her.
"The baby disappeared."
A sudden silence filled the room.
The baby monitor made a small crackling sound.
Lily moved on the blanket and reached for her toy.
Emma stared at her daughter.
The innocence of the moment felt almost cruel.
"What does that have to do with me?"
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"Everything."
Emma stepped back.
May you like
"No."
The word came out quietly.
