Chương 7

Emily reached the top.

She raised her hand.

Everyone stopped.

She listened.

Nothing.

Then she slowly opened the office door.

The room looked normal.

Almost too normal.

The desk.

The books.

The old photographs.

Everything appeared untouched.

Daniel stepped inside.

Then he stopped.

“What is it?”

Emily asked.

He walked toward the desk.

A picture frame had been moved.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Daniel picked it up.

Behind the frame was a small opening in the wall.

Emily looked at him.

“You knew about this?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Thomas stepped closer.

“Your father did.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

Thomas pointed.

“The hidden compartment.”

Daniel stared.

“My father built this house.”

Emily slowly opened the compartment.

Inside was a small black box.

No lock.

No label.

Just an old box covered in dust.

Daniel reached toward it.

His hand stopped halfway.

Because he knew.

Whatever was inside had been hidden for a reason.

Emily gently took it.

“We need to see.”

She opened the box.

Inside were several documents.

A flash drive.

And a handwritten letter.

Daniel recognized the handwriting immediately.

His father’s.

Emily looked at him.

“Do you want to read it?”

Daniel stared at the letter.

For years, he had wanted answers from a man who was no longer alive.

Now those answers were sitting in front of him.

He took the letter.

His hands trembled.

My son Daniel,

If you are reading this, then I failed to fix what I started.

Daniel stopped.

His breathing changed.

Emily watched him carefully.

He continued reading.

I made mistakes that hurt people I loved.

I believed I could control dangerous people by working with them.

I was wrong.

Daniel lowered the letter slightly.

Sarah looked at him.

“What does it say?”

He swallowed.

“My father knew.”

Thomas looked away.

Daniel kept reading.

Michael tried to expose me.

He discovered the truth before I could stop it.

But the person who betrayed us was not Michael.

It was someone else.

Someone who was closer than any of us realized.

Daniel’s eyes moved to the final lines.

The person who destroyed this family is still alive.

And they have been waiting for the right moment to finish what they started.

The letter fell slightly in his hand.

Emily picked it up.

“Who did he mean?”

Daniel looked lost.

“I don’t know.”

Thomas stepped closer.

“There’s another page.”

Daniel turned the letter over.

Nothing.

Then Thomas pointed.

“Hold it near the light.”

Emily lifted the paper.

A hidden message appeared faintly.

A name.

Daniel stared.

The blood drained from his face.

“No.”

Emily looked at him.

“Who is it?”

Daniel could barely speak.

“My sister.”

The room went silent.

Sarah looked shocked.

“Your sister?”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Laura.”

Emily searched her memory.

“Your aunt Laura?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.”

“But she died years ago.”

Daniel looked toward Thomas.

Thomas’s expression was grim.

“That’s what everyone believed.”

Emily stepped back.

“Another person who wasn’t really dead?”

Thomas nodded.

“Laura disappeared the same year Michael did.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Thomas’s face showed regret.

“Because I didn’t know until recently.”

Emily looked between them.

“Wait.”

Her voice became sharper.

“You’re saying my uncle disappeared because he discovered the truth, Thomas disappeared because he was helping him, and now my aunt may still be alive?”

Nobody answered.

Because that was exactly what they were saying.

Then the lights suddenly returned.

Everyone looked toward the hallway.

The security system restarted.

Emily checked her phone.

A new video file appeared.

Automatically sent.

She opened it.

The screen showed their house.

The camera angle was from inside the living room.

The recording time was only one minute earlier.

They watched themselves entering.

They watched Thomas.

They watched Daniel.

Then the camera turned slightly.

Someone was standing in the corner of the room.

Someone who had been there before the lights went out.

Emily froze the video.

Daniel leaned closer.

The person’s face was visible.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

Sarah whispered the name first.

“Laura.”

Emily looked at the screen.

Her missing aunt was watching them from the shadows.

And beneath the video was one final message.

I was never missing.

I was waiting.

The message stayed on the screen for several seconds.

I was never missing.

I was waiting.

Nobody spoke.

The words felt heavier than any confession they had heard that night.

Daniel stared at the video.

His sister.

His little sister Laura.

The person he had mourned for years.

The person he believed was gone forever.

Alive.

Watching.

Waiting.

Emily looked at her father.

“Dad.”

He did not answer.

His eyes were fixed on the screen.

Memories moved through his mind.

Laura holding his hand when they were children.

Laura promising she would always protect him.

Laura disappearing after Michael vanished.

The family believing they had lost two people.

But the truth had been hiding.

Not lost.

Hidden.

Thomas slowly sat down.

“I never wanted this to happen.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You knew Laura was alive?”

Thomas shook his head.

“Not until today.”

“Today?”

Thomas looked toward the camera.

“Because today was the first time she wanted us to know.”

Emily frowned.

“Why?”

Thomas looked at the documents.

“Because she knows we found everything.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“What everything?”

Thomas pointed toward the black box.

“The evidence.”

Emily looked at the flash drive.

The one thing nobody had opened yet.

Daniel picked it up.

His hands were still shaking.

“Maybe we should see what is on it.”

Emily connected it to the laptop on the desk.

A single folder appeared.

No password.

No protection.

Only one name.

Michael.

Daniel closed his eyes.

His brother’s name still carried pain after all these years.

Emily opened the folder.

Inside were videos.

Documents.

Recordings.

The first video started automatically.

Michael appeared on the screen.

Older than Emily remembered.

Serious.

Tired.

But alive.

Daniel immediately covered his mouth.

He had not seen his brother’s face in twenty-five years.

May you like

“Daniel.”

Michael’s recorded voice filled the room.
