Chương 3

“And the SOS?”
Emily looked at the phone.
“I activated it because someone entered the house while I was asleep.”
Daniel immediately turned toward the doors and windows.
His protective instincts returned instantly.
“When?”
“Two nights ago.”
“Why didn’t you wake me?”
“Because when I checked the security cameras…”
Emily stopped.
Her expression changed.
Daniel noticed.
“What did you see?”
Emily’s voice became barely audible.
“I saw someone standing outside your bedroom window.”
Daniel felt a chill move through his body.
Sarah grabbed his arm.
“Daniel.”
He looked toward the dark glass at the end of the hallway.
For the first time that night, he did not feel like the strongest person in the house.
He felt like someone who had been watched.
Someone who had been waiting years for an answer he never knew he needed.
“Did you recognize the person?”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
She paused.
“But they left something behind.”
Daniel turned back.
“What?”
Emily reached into her jacket again.
This time she pulled out a small metal object.
It was old.
Scratched.
Worn from years of use.
Daniel stared at it.
His face slowly changed.
Because he knew exactly what it was.
A small military-style identification tag.
One he had not seen since the night Emily disappeared.
“Where did you get that?”
Emily watched his reaction carefully.
“You tell me.”
Daniel reached for it with trembling hands.
The moment his fingers touched the metal, memories he had spent decades burying came rushing back.
The rain.
The hospital.
The police questions.
The promise he made to himself that night.
A promise that if Emily was ever in danger again, he would never hide the truth from her.
But he had broken that promise before he even realized it.
“Dad.”
Emily’s voice pulled him back.
“What happened that night?”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
The little girl he had tried to protect.
The soldier standing in front of him.
The woman who had risked everything to uncover a secret he had buried.
His eyes filled with tears.
“There was someone else there that night.”
Emily stopped breathing.
“Who?”
Daniel looked at the metal tag in his hand.
And after twenty-five years of silence, he finally said the name he had feared.
“Your grandfather’s brother.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
Because she knew the truth was finally coming out.
And Daniel knew that once he started speaking, their family would never be the same again.
Daniel’s voice trembled as he looked at the metal tag resting in his palm.
“My brother’s name was Michael.”
Emily watched his face carefully.
She had heard the name before.
Not from her father.
From the file.
The file that had brought her home.
“Michael Carter?”
Daniel slowly nodded.
“He was my older brother.”
Sarah looked down.
She had spent years hoping this moment would never come.
Because some truths did not disappear when people stopped talking about them.
They only waited.
Emily stepped closer.
“Why was his tag there that night?”
Daniel closed his fingers around the metal.
“Because Michael was there when you disappeared.”
The words made Emily freeze.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The only sound in the hallway was the quiet hum of the house.
The same house where they had celebrated birthdays.
The same house where they had taken family photos.
The same house where a secret had lived for twenty-five years.
“You knew?”
Emily’s voice was barely a whisper.
“You knew he was there?”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
“I knew he came to the house that night.”
“Then why did you tell everyone I wandered away?”
Daniel looked away.
Because the answer was something he had hated himself for admitting.
“Because I was afraid.”
Emily’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Not disbelief.
Pain.
“My entire life, I thought you were the person who would always tell me the truth.”
Daniel swallowed hard.
“I wanted to.”
“But you didn’t.”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“I didn’t.”
Sarah stepped forward.
“Emily, your father was trying to protect you.”
Emily turned toward her mother.
“By hiding the truth?”
Sarah had no answer.
Because there was no easy defense.
Daniel sat down slowly on the wooden bench near the doorway.
For the first time that night, he looked old.
Not like the strong father Emily remembered.
Not like the man who always knew what to do.
Just a tired man carrying a burden too heavy for one person.
“After you disappeared, I found you near the old road behind our neighborhood.”
Emily listened silently.
“You were crying.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I remember the road.”
Daniel looked up.
“You do?”
“Pieces of it.”
She touched her forehead.
“A streetlight.”
“A black truck.”
“A man telling me not to be afraid.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Michael.”
Emily looked at him.
“He was the man?”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I don’t know everything that happened.”
“But you knew enough.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I knew he was involved.”
Emily stepped back.
“Why would my uncle take me?”
“He didn’t take you to hurt you.”
The words surprised her.
“Then what did he do?”
Daniel looked at the floor.
“He was trying to expose something.”
“What?”
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Something our family was connected to.”
Sarah looked nervous.
“Daniel.”
He looked at her.
“I can’t hide it anymore.”
She lowered her eyes.
Emily crossed her arms.
“Hide what?”
Daniel stared at the emergency phone on the table.
“The reason Michael disappeared.”
Emily’s breathing slowed.
“He disappeared?”
Daniel nodded.
“Three months after that night, Michael was gone.”
“No one ever found him.”
The room became silent.
Emily remembered the file.
Missing person.
Closed investigation.
No evidence.
No explanation.
“But the military file said he was investigating something before he vanished.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You saw that?”
“Yes.”
“What else did you see?”
Emily hesitated.
“A company name.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What company?”
Emily watched him carefully.
“Carter Defense Solutions.”
The color left Daniel’s face.
Sarah immediately looked away.
May you like
Emily noticed.
“You both know that name.”
