Chapter 4: The Weak Link

While Sterling’s investigator, an ex-FBI agent named Vance, tore into the corporate server logs, I received an unexpected visitor.
The hospital door creaked open, and Lauren slipped inside. Tyler’s wife looked terrified, dark circles bruised under her eyes, and she was nervously twisting her wedding ring.
"Lauren," I said cautiously.
"He's going to kill me next, Bridget," she blurted out, bursting into tears. She collapsed into the chair beside my bed. "Tyler... he's losing his mind. He spent all the money your parents gave him. He owes terrible people a lot of money. That's why he needed the inheritance."
I stared at the woman I had always dismissed as a silent bystander. "You saw him push me, didn't you?"
Lauren nodded, sobbing into her hands. "I saw him shove you hard. But Harold told me if I opened my mouth, he would hire the best lawyers in the state to take my son, Mason, away from me. I'd never see my baby again."

I reached out, my fingers brushing her trembling arm. "Lauren, if you testify, I will use every cent of Rose's billion-dollar estate to protect you and Mason. I will buy you a house anywhere in the world. I will destroy them. But I need you to be brave."
She looked up, her eyes wide and terrified, but a tiny spark of resolve flickered in the darkness. "Okay. What do we do?"
