Chapter 1: The Paramedic’s Shield

The wail of the approaching sirens finally broke the spell that had frozen my brother’s birthday party. The heavy Connecticut heat seemed to crack open as two police cruisers pulled into the driveway, their red and blue lights flashing against the pristine white siding of my parents' house.

Tyler’s panicked eyes darted from me to the back door, where his friend Marcus had just reappeared. Marcus gave a subtle, tight nod. The cameras were wiped. I could see the tension leave Tyler’s shoulders, his spine straightening as he prepared to step back into the role of the golden boy.

"Officers, thank God you're here!" my mother, Diane, cried out, her voice trembling with perfectly manufactured hysteria. "My daughter—she slipped! She’s been under so much mental distress lately, and she just fell!"

Two officers pushed through the crowd of gaping guests. Before they could even ask a question, Sarah, the paramedic, stood up and physically blocked my parents from getting closer to my immobilized body.

"Patient stated she was pushed by her brother," Sarah said, her voice loud, flat, and clinical enough to carry over the murmurs of the crowd. "This is now a crime scene. Everyone steps back."

My father, Harold, turned a shade of purple I had never seen before. "Now listen here, you little—"

"Sir, step back," the taller officer commanded, resting a hand on his duty belt. He looked down at me, taking in my twisted posture on the decorative rocks. "Ma'am, is this true?"

"He pushed me," I gasped, the pain in my spine finally breaking through the shock. The edges of my vision were going dark, blurring the horrifying image of my family standing united against me. "Tyler pushed me. He wanted the inheritance."

As the EMTs gently strapped me to a rigid backboard, Tyler buried his face in his hands, playing the devastated brother. But just before they lifted me into the ambulance, I caught his eye. He wasn't crying. He was smiling.
