He looked nervous.
More nervous than David had ever seen him.
Daniel stood slowly.
“David.”
David did not shake his hand.
“Why did you touch Lily’s trust?”
Daniel looked down.
“That is not the whole story.”
David’s voice remained controlled.
“You forged documents.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes.”
Maya’s expression hardened.
“Why?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because I thought I was protecting her.”
David stared.
“Protecting who?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Lily.”
Nobody spoke.
Then David stepped closer.
“You expect me to believe that?”
Daniel looked broken.
“No.”
He opened a folder sitting on the table.
“Because I know how it looks.”
He removed a photograph.
A photograph that made Maya freeze.
David noticed immediately.
“What is that?”
Maya slowly reached for it.
Her hands began trembling.
Because the picture showed Lily.
But not alone.
Standing beside her was someone they had never expected to see.
Someone who changed everything they thought they knew.
Daniel whispered.
“I found this hidden in the trust records.”
David looked at Maya.
“What is it?”
Maya could barely speak.
“That was taken the day Lily disappeared from school.”
The room went silent.
David looked at the photograph again.
And for the first time, he realized the truth was much bigger than his absence.
Someone had been hiding something about his daughter.
And whoever it was had been hiding it for a very long time.
Daniel placed the photograph on the table.
Nobody moved.
For several seconds, the only sound in the conference room was the low hum of the air conditioning.
David stared at the image.
Lily was standing in the school courtyard.
She was smiling.
She was holding her backpack.
She looked happy.
But standing beside her was a woman David had never seen before.
A woman who had one hand resting gently on Lily’s shoulder.
Maya reached for the photograph again.
Her fingers trembled.
“Who is she?”
Daniel looked down.
“That is what I was trying to find out.”
David looked at him sharply.
“You expect me to believe you were investigating?”
Daniel accepted the anger.
“I know what I did was wrong.”
“That is not an answer.”
Daniel took a slow breath.
“The trust was never about money.”
David frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked at Maya.
“It was about information.”
Maya’s face changed.
“What information?”
Daniel opened another folder.
Inside were copies of emails, school records, and private reports.
“I discovered these when I was looking through the trust documents.”
David looked at the papers.
“Why were you looking through them?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Because someone contacted me.”
“Who?”
“I do not know.”
David’s expression hardened.
“You expect us to believe a stranger convinced you to steal from your niece?”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“No.”
He paused.
“I was already suspicious.”
Maya looked at him.
“Of what?”
Daniel pointed toward the photograph.
“Of Lily’s mother.”
The room became silent.
David immediately turned toward Maya.
“What?”
Maya looked confused.
“Why would you be suspicious of me?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not you.”
He looked at David.
“Your first wife.”
David froze.
The words landed harder than expected.
“My first wife died eight years ago.”
“I know.”
“Then what are you saying?”
Daniel pushed another document across the table.
“Lily was not connected to only one family secret.”
David looked down.
The document was an old hospital record.
The name at the top made his chest tighten.
Lily Vance.
Date of birth.
The same date.
Everything looked normal.
Until he saw the section labeled emergency contact.
A name he did not recognize.
David looked up.
“What is this?”
Daniel answered quietly.
“The person listed as Lily’s emergency contact before she was born.”
Maya picked up the paper.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she stopped.
“She was never supposed to have this information.”
David looked at her.
“What information?”
Maya looked terrified.
“I don’t know.”
Richard took the document.
He studied it carefully.
“This appears authentic.”
David looked between them.
“Someone explain what is happening.”
Daniel leaned back.
“I found out Lily’s biological records were altered.”
David stared.
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“That is impossible.”
“David.”
Daniel’s voice softened.
“I am not saying what you think.”
The room became even quieter.
David’s expression changed.
“What are you saying?”
Daniel looked at Maya.
“She knew.”
Maya stepped back slightly.
“What?”
“She knew there was something hidden.”
David looked at Maya.
“Is that true?”
Maya’s eyes filled with pain.
“I did not know everything.”
“But you knew something.”
Maya looked down.
“Yes.”
The answer broke something inside David.
Not because she had hidden something.
Because he realized how many secrets had surrounded his family while he was gone.
“How long?”
Maya swallowed.
“Since Lily was born.”
David sat down slowly.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Maya looked at him.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
She looked at Lily’s photograph.
“Of losing her.”
David stared.
“You thought I would take her away?”
“No.”
Maya’s voice became quiet.
“I thought someone else would.”
Nobody spoke.
The statement changed the entire room.
Richard leaned forward.
“Mrs. Vance, we need the full story.”
Maya closed her eyes.
For years, she had carried the secret alone.
Now there was no reason to carry it anymore.
“When Lily was born, the doctors told me there was a problem with her records.”
David listened carefully.
“They said someone had requested changes to her birth information.”
“Who?”
“I never found out.”
Daniel looked at him.
“That is why I started investigating.”
Maya continued.
“I hired someone privately.”
David looked surprised.
“You did?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Maya looked at him.
“Because you were never home long enough for me to tell you.”
The truth hurt.
Again.
And again.
“I found out someone had accessed Lily’s files before she was even born.”
Richard looked through the documents.
“Who had access?”
Maya shook her head.
“I do not know.”
Daniel spoke quietly.
“But I found one thing.”
