Chương 2

She looked at the photograph.

Then she looked back at him.

“The hospital called you seventeen times.”

David’s face lost color.

“No.”

“You never answered.”

“I was on a flight.”

“You were posting pictures from the beach.”

The truth landed between them.

David looked away.

His confidence disappeared.

The man who had negotiated billion-dollar contracts and controlled entire companies suddenly looked like someone who had no idea how to face one simple truth.

He had not been there.

Maya touched the edge of Lily’s frame gently.

“She was afraid.”

David’s eyes filled with confusion and pain.

“Afraid of what?”

Maya’s voice became softer.

“Of forgetting your voice.”

David looked down.

His hands began to shake.

The mansion that once represented his success now felt like a courtroom.

Every expensive object around him felt like evidence.

The leather sofa.

The crystal chandelier.

The paintings.

The empty spaces where Lily’s toys used to be.

All of it reminded him of what he had ignored.

“I didn’t know,” David whispered.

Maya looked at him.

“That was the problem.”

No one spoke for several seconds.

Outside the tall windows, the sunlight slowly disappeared.

The mansion became darker.

The older man closed the folder halfway.

“Mr. Vance, there is more you need to know.”

David looked up.

His eyes were filled with fear.

“What more?”

Maya picked up Lily’s photograph again.

Her hands were still trembling.

But her voice was steady.

“The vacation you took was not the reason I called you home.”

David stared at her.

“Then why?”

Maya looked toward the hallway where Lily’s bedroom was located.

A room that had remained untouched since the day everything changed.

“Because someone needs to explain why Lily’s trust was changed three days before she passed.”

David stopped breathing for a moment.

“What?”

The three men exchanged a glance.

The room suddenly felt different.

This was no longer only about a grieving mother and an absent father.

There was a secret hidden inside the papers.

A secret someone had tried to bury.

And David Vance had just walked back into the mansion where the truth had been waiting for him.

The older man closed the folder halfway.

David stared at the papers as if they belonged to someone else.

“Changed three days before she passed?” he repeated.

His voice sounded distant.

“What are you saying?”

Maya did not answer immediately.

She walked toward the fireplace and looked at the empty space above the mantel where Lily’s favorite painting had once hung.

A small watercolor of a garden.

A gift Lily had made for David when she was five years old.

He had promised to frame it.

He never did.

“There was a new document added to Lily’s trust,” Maya said.

David shook his head slowly.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because I never approved anything.”

Maya looked back at him.

“That’s exactly why we are here.”

The words made David uncomfortable.

He looked toward the three men standing silently near the fireplace.

“Who are they?”

The older man stepped forward.

“My name is Richard Hale.”

David recognized the name immediately.

The color drained from his face.

Richard Hale was one of the most respected estate attorneys in the country.

He had handled the private affairs of billionaires, politicians, and families who valued secrecy above everything else.

“What are you doing here?”

Richard opened the folder again.

“Representing Lily Vance.”

David frowned.

“She was seven years old.”

Richard’s expression softened.

“Yes.”

The answer was simple.

But somehow it hurt more.

“She was also the beneficiary of a trust created before her birth.”

David looked at Maya.

“I don’t understand.”

Maya held Lily’s photograph against her chest.

“That is because nobody wanted you to understand.”

David’s eyebrows tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Before Maya could respond, a soft sound came from the hallway.

David turned instinctively.

For a second, his expression changed.

He looked like he expected to see Lily running toward him.

A little girl with messy hair and a smile asking why he was late.

But the hallway remained empty.

The realization hit him again.

She was not coming.

His shoulders lowered.

“I should have answered.”

Maya looked at him.

“Yes.”

“I should have come home.”

“Yes.”

“I thought there was more time.”

Maya’s eyes became wet, but she refused to look away.

“Everyone thinks there is more time.”

The silence that followed was heavier than any argument they had ever had.

David placed his suitcase on the floor.

For the first time since arriving, he looked like he had forgotten why he came back.

The vacation.

The meetings.

The excuses.

None of it mattered anymore.

Richard gently placed a document on the table.

“This amendment was submitted electronically under your authorization.”

David stared at the paper.

“My authorization?”

“Yes.”

“That’s not possible.”

Richard pointed to the signature line.

David leaned closer.

His face changed.

The signature looked like his.

But something was wrong.

The pressure of the letters.

The angle.

The final stroke.

He knew his own signature.

And this was not his.

“Someone forged this.”

Maya watched him carefully.

“That is what I thought.”

David looked at her.

“You knew?”

“I found out the morning after Lily’s funeral.”

His eyes widened.

“And you waited until now?”

Maya’s expression hardened.

“I was waiting for you to come home.”

David looked ashamed.

“Maya…”

“I wanted to see if you would come back because you missed your daughter.”

She paused.

“Or because you were forced to.”

David looked down.

The answer was obvious.

For fourteen days, he had ignored every call.

Every message.

Every warning.

He had returned only because Maya sent one final message.

Come home.

We need to talk about Lily.

He thought it was a threat.

He thought it was another fight.

He never imagined it was a goodbye he had already missed.

Richard turned another page.

“There is something else.”

David looked up.

“What?”

“Lily’s trust was not the only thing changed.”

Maya closed her eyes.

May you like

She had been waiting for this moment.

David noticed.
