Chương 5

He remained in Lily’s room long after Maya and Richard left him alone.

The mansion was silent, but for the first time in fourteen days, David wanted to hear every sound.

The ticking clock.

The rain against the windows.

The distant movement of people searching through the house.

He had spent years filling every quiet moment with noise.

Phone calls.

Meetings.

Flights.

Deals.

Anything that allowed him to avoid facing what mattered most.

Now the silence was the only thing left.

And it was unbearable.

Near midnight, David finally stood and walked downstairs.

The living room looked different.

The same furniture.

The same expensive decorations.

But he no longer saw wealth.

He saw everything he had used as an excuse.

On the marble table sat the leather folder from Richard.

Beside it was Lily’s photograph.

David picked it up carefully.

He traced his finger along the edge of the frame.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

The words felt too small.

Too late.

But they were the only words he had.

Maya stood quietly at the entrance of the room.

She had changed into a simple gray sweater.

She looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Just tired.

“You should sleep.”

David turned toward her.

“I don’t think I can.”

Maya nodded.

“Neither could I.”

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The years between them felt like a wall.

But tonight, that wall had cracks.

“I should have listened to you,” David said.

Maya looked down.

“Yes.”

He accepted the answer.

No excuses.

No defense.

No explanation.

“I kept telling myself I was doing everything for you and Lily.”

Maya looked at him.

“And when did you realize we did not need more things?”

David looked at Lily’s photograph.

“Tonight.”

The honesty surprised even him.

Maya sat down slowly.

“Do you remember her last birthday?”

David closed his eyes.

He remembered.

He had been in another city.

A major investor meeting.

He promised he would arrive before dinner.

He did not.

“I sent her a gift.”

Maya’s expression changed.

“Yes.”

“I thought that meant something.”

“It did.”

David looked confused.

Maya continued.

“She loved the gift.”

His eyes softened.

“Then why does it feel like I failed?”

“Because a gift was never what she wanted.”

The words hurt because they were true.

“She wanted you sitting next to her.”

David looked away.

“I know.”

“No.”

Maya’s voice remained calm.

“You know now.”

That difference was painful.

David sat across from her.

“I thought providing was the same as being there.”

Maya looked at the photograph.

“Lily never needed a billionaire.”

David swallowed.

“She needed her father.”

The sentence stayed between them.

Then Richard entered the room holding several documents.

Neither of them noticed how late it had become.

“Sorry to interrupt.”

Maya stood slightly.

“Did you find Daniel?”

Richard placed the documents on the table.

“Not yet.”

David immediately became alert.

“But?”

Richard looked at him.

“But we found where he moved the money connected to Lily’s trust.”

David frowned.

“What money?”

Richard opened the file.

“Over eight million dollars.”

Maya’s expression changed.

“Eight million?”

Richard nodded.

“Funds transferred from accounts established for Lily’s future education and medical needs.”

David stared at the papers.

“That money was hers.”

“Yes.”

“Where did it go?”

Richard pointed to several transactions.

“Three companies.”

David leaned closer.

He recognized two of the names.

Both were connected to his brother.

“My brother stole from my daughter.”

Richard did not answer immediately.

The silence was enough.

David stood.

His anger was different now.

Not explosive.

Not uncontrolled.

It was cold.

Focused.

“Why?”

Maya looked at him.

“That is what we need to find out.”

David walked toward the window.

The rain had stopped.

The city lights reflected across the glass.

“Daniel always hated that Lily had control over that trust.”

Richard nodded.

“He believed the money should remain within the family.”

David turned.

“She was family.”

Richard looked at him.

“Apparently, not everyone saw it that way.”

David clenched his jaw.

“When can we find him?”

Richard checked his phone.

“We may not need to.”

A notification appeared on the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”

Richard looked at David.

“He contacted his attorney.”

David stepped forward.

“What did he say?”

“He requested a meeting.”

Maya immediately became cautious.

“Why?”

Richard looked at the message.

“He claims he has information about Lily’s death.”

The room became still.

David stared at him.

“What?”

“He says the trust documents are only part of the story.”

Maya’s face lost color.

“What story?”

Richard looked at both of them.

“He says someone else was involved.”

David felt a chill.

“Who?”

Richard lowered the phone.

“He did not say.”

The mansion seemed colder than before.

Someone else.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another reason Lily’s name had been used.

David looked at Maya.

“Did you know anything about this?”

Maya shook her head slowly.

“No.”

Richard closed the file.

“Daniel wants to meet tomorrow morning.”

David immediately nodded.

“Then we meet him.”

Maya looked worried.

“David.”

He looked at her.

“I know what you’re thinking.”

“You do not know what he is capable of.”

David looked back toward Lily’s room.

“I know exactly what people are capable of when they think nobody is watching.”

Maya studied him.

This was not the same man who walked through the front door earlier.

Something had changed.

Not completely.

Not magically.

But enough.

The next morning arrived under a gray sky.

The Vance mansion felt like a place waiting for a verdict.

David dressed simply.

No expensive suit.

No designer watch.

No symbols of success.

Just a dark jacket and the expression of someone who had finally stopped running.

Maya noticed.

“You look different.”

David looked at her.

“I feel different.”

She almost smiled.

Almost.

Richard arrived shortly after.

The three of them drove to the private office where Daniel had requested the meeting.

The building belonged to one of Daniel’s companies.

May you like

A quiet place hidden away from the public eye.

When they entered the conference room, Daniel was already waiting.
