Chương 7

It was someone who had been invited into our lives.
Someone who knew our names.
Our routines.
Our secrets.
Rachel stepped closer.
"There is one more thing you need to know."
I looked at her.
"What?"
She glanced at the baby.
Then at Daniel.
And her voice became barely a whisper.
"The person who tried to erase Michael is the same person who has been watching your family all these years."
The room went cold.
Daniel looked toward the window.
My mother covered her mouth.
Lily grabbed my hand.
And then Rachel said the words that changed everything.
"The person who caused all of this is inside this house."
The words did not make sense at first.
"The person who caused all of this is inside this house."
I looked around the living room.
The cream-colored sofa.
The family photographs.
The wooden staircase where Lily had been standing.
The place where I had spent years believing I was safe.
My eyes moved slowly from one person to another.
My mother.
Daniel.
Rachel.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody denied it.
That silence felt like a confession.
"Inside this house?"
My voice was almost a whisper.
Rachel nodded.
"I didn't mean physically every second."
She looked at Daniel.
"But the person who has been controlling what you know has been close to you."
Daniel's expression changed.
"Rachel."
She ignored him.
"She deserves the truth."
My mother closed her eyes.
"Please."
Rachel looked at her.
"You had your chance."
My heart started racing.
I looked at Daniel.
"Why is she looking at you?"
His face went pale.
"Because she knows what happened."
"What happened?"
Daniel didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"No more."
My voice shook.
"No more protecting me."
The baby moved slightly in my arms.
I looked down at him.
Then back at everyone.
"If someone in this house knows the truth, I want to hear it now."
Rachel lowered her eyes.
"Your father had a partner."
My mother looked toward the floor.
"His name was Victor."
I frowned.
"I don't know anyone named Victor."
Rachel nodded.
"Because he made sure you wouldn't."
Daniel quietly said.
"He changed his name."
I turned toward him.
"You know him."
Daniel looked trapped.
"Yes."
My stomach tightened.
"How?"
He took a slow breath.
"Because he was the reason I met you."
The room became silent.
I stared at him.
"What?"
Daniel looked devastated.
"I didn't know who he really was at first."
Rachel shook her head.
"But you found out."
Daniel nodded.
"Years later."
My mind struggled to process everything.
The man I married.
The person I trusted with my life.
Had a connection to the person who destroyed my past.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Because by the time I knew, I was already in love with you."
I felt tears burning in my eyes.
"But you still lied."
He nodded.
"Yes."
That honesty hurt.
But it was better than another excuse.
Rachel stepped forward.
"Victor was your father's closest friend."
She looked at the old letter in my hand.
"He knew everything about your family."
"What did he want?"
Rachel's expression became serious.
"Control."
The word hung in the room.
"He wanted your father's company."
"He wanted his money."
"He wanted his influence."
My mother whispered.
"And when your father refused..."
Rachel nodded.
"He started destroying everything around him."
I looked at the letter again.
"My father knew."
Rachel nodded.
"He knew someone close to him was betraying him."
"Why didn't he tell me?"
Rachel's eyes softened.
"Because you were young."
I shook my head.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
My voice cracked.
"But I was still his daughter."
Rachel looked away.
"He thought keeping you innocent was the same as keeping you safe."
I laughed sadly.
"But it wasn't."
"No."
Rachel agreed.
"It wasn't."
The honesty from a stranger hurt less than the silence from my own family.
Lily squeezed my hand.
"Mommy."
I looked down.
"Yes?"
"Is Daddy bad?"
The question cut deeper than anything else.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked broken.
I didn't know the answer.
And that terrified me.
"I don't know."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Hearing those words from me seemed to hurt him.
But I couldn't lie.
Not anymore.
The front window suddenly reflected a moving shadow.
Daniel immediately turned.
Everyone noticed.
"What was that?"
My mother whispered.
Daniel moved toward the curtains.
Rachel grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
He looked at her.
"They found us."
Rachel shook her head.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"They want us to think they found us."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"What does that mean?"
Rachel looked toward the door.
"It means Victor has always been ahead of us."
The baby began crying again.
The sound filled the room.
I held him closer.
Rachel looked at the child.
"He knows about the baby."
"How?"
My voice became sharper.
"Because Michael left evidence."
She looked at me.
"The baby isn't just proof that Michael survived long enough to have a child."
I froze.
"What?"
Rachel swallowed.
"He is also connected to the evidence Michael discovered."
I stared at her.
"What evidence?"
She looked at the envelope.
"The original documents."
My mother's face changed.
"What?"
Rachel nodded.
"Michael hid them."
"Where?"
Rachel looked around the room.
And then her eyes stopped on the family photographs.
My heart dropped.
"No."
Rachel walked toward the wall.
She reached behind one of the frames.
My mother gasped.
"I forgot."
Everyone looked at her.
"You forgot?"
She looked ashamed.
"I haven't looked there in years."
Rachel removed the photograph from the wall.
Behind it was a small hidden compartment.
Inside was a thin black folder.
My entire body went cold.
All these years.
It had been in my house.
Right in front of me.
Rachel handed the folder to me.
"Michael wanted you to have this when you were ready."
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Bank records.
Photographs.
Names.
May you like
Dates.
And one picture that made my blood run cold.
