Chương 5
The room became completely silent.
"My biggest mistake was believing I had more time."
A tear fell onto the paper.
"I wanted to come back to you."
My breathing became uneven.
"I wanted to tell you everything."
I closed my eyes for a moment.
For years, I had believed Michael abandoned me.
I had spent so much time convincing myself I was better off without answers.
But he had been trying to return.
"Someone found out what I knew."
The next sentence was darker.
"They threatened the people closest to me."
I looked at the baby.
The little boy was sleeping peacefully.
"He threatened you."
Daniel whispered.
I looked at him.
"You knew."
His face tightened.
"I knew Michael was scared."
"You knew and you never told me?"
"I was trying to keep you safe."
I laughed quietly.
The sound was filled with pain.
"Everyone keeps using that excuse."
Daniel looked down.
"I know."
"No, you don't."
I held the letter against my chest.
"You don't know what it feels like to find out your entire life has been edited by people who claim they love you."
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could argue with that.
I read the next part.
"There is one person who can explain everything."
My eyes moved faster.
"Find the woman who brought you this child."
I froze.
The room stopped.
The baby.
The woman.
The missing piece.
I looked at my mother.
"You said you didn't know her."
My mother looked terrified.
"I don't."
I held up the letter.
"Michael says she can explain everything."
My mother shook her head.
"I only saw her for a few minutes."
"When?"
"Three nights ago."
My heart started racing.
"What did she look like?"
My mother hesitated.
"She was young."
"How young?"
"Maybe early thirties."
I looked at Daniel.
"Did you see her?"
He nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"And you didn't tell me?"
His eyes filled with guilt.
"She made me promise."
"Promise what?"
Daniel took a deep breath.
"Promise that I wouldn't tell you until she was ready."
I stared at him.
"Why would you listen to her?"
His answer came quietly.
"Because she showed me something."
"What?"
He reached into his pocket.
My body immediately tensed.
He pulled out his phone.
For a second, I thought about all the secrets that had been hidden through phones and recordings.
But then he opened a photo.
He handed it to me.
The image was blurry.
A woman standing outside at night.
Holding a baby carrier.
My eyes moved to her face.
And my entire body went still.
I knew her.
Not well.
But enough.
"No."
My voice disappeared.
My mother looked at me.
"Who is she?"
I stared at the picture.
Because the woman was someone I had seen before.
Someone who had been part of my life without me realizing it.
"Her name is Rachel."
Daniel looked surprised.
"You know her?"
I nodded slowly.
"She was my father's assistant."
My mother's face changed.
"No."
I looked at her.
"You know her too."
My mother sat down heavily.
"That can't be possible."
"Why?"
She covered her mouth.
"Because Rachel disappeared twenty years ago."
The room went cold.
Twenty years.
The same time Michael disappeared.
The same time everything changed.
I looked at the baby.
Then at the picture.
Then at Michael's letter.
Everything was connected.
"Why would she have Michael's child?"
Nobody answered.
Then Lily spoke.
Her voice was soft.
"Maybe because she was trying to bring him back."
We all looked at her.
Children sometimes said things adults ignored.
But sometimes they saw things adults were too afraid to see.
My daughter walked closer.
"Grandma said someone took the baby to keep him safe."
My mother looked shocked.
"When did you hear that?"
Lily looked down.
"Last night."
My heart dropped.
"You heard Grandma talking again?"
She nodded.
"I heard her say the baby couldn't stay here."
My mother immediately stood.
"Lily, that wasn't what I meant."
"What did you mean?"
My mother's face broke.
"I meant he couldn't stay hidden forever."
The baby began crying softly.
The sound cut through the tension.
I immediately held him closer.
"It's okay."
I whispered.
"I'm here."
The words surprised me.
Because despite everything.
Despite the lies.
Despite the fear.
I already felt connected to him.
Not because of Michael.
Not because of the mystery.
Because he was a child who needed someone.
Daniel watched me.
"I know what you're thinking."
I looked at him.
"No, you don't."
He nodded.
"You're thinking about leaving."
I didn't answer.
Because he was right.
For the first time in years, I wondered if the home I built was actually mine.
Daniel stepped closer.
"I deserve your anger."
"Yes."
"I deserve your questions."
"Yes."
"But please believe one thing."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"I never stopped trying to protect you."
My eyes filled.
"Protection without honesty is just another kind of prison."
The words hurt him.
But he accepted them.
Because they were true.
A sudden sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone froze.
Daniel immediately moved toward the window.
My mother grabbed the edge of the table.
"What is it?"
Daniel looked outside.
The color disappeared from his face.
"What?"
I stood.
"Daniel."
He turned around.
"We need to leave."
My heart raced.
"Why?"
He looked at the baby.
Then at me.
"Because someone found us."
The room went silent.
My mother whispered.
"Who?"
Daniel's eyes moved toward the front door.
And then came the sound that made everyone freeze.
Three slow knocks.
Not loud.
Not angry.
Just calm.
Like whoever was standing outside already knew they were invited.
Daniel stepped between me and the door.
My mother grabbed Lily's hand.
The baby cried louder.
And I held Michael's letter against my chest as the person outside knocked again.
This time, a woman's voice came through the door.
"I know you're in there."
My blood ran cold.
Because I recognized the voice.
It was Rachel.
May you like
Nobody moved.
Rachel's voice came through the door again.
