Chương 2

"No."

Her voice was small.

But certain.

She looked at me.

"Mommy needs to hear it."

My breathing stopped.

The room felt smaller.

The sunlight no longer felt warm.

My daughter unlocked the phone.

A recording appeared on the screen.

The baby made a soft sound.

My arms instinctively tightened around him.

Lily pressed play.

For a second, there was only static.

Then my mother's voice filled the room.

"I don't know how much longer I can keep this secret."

My knees almost gave out.

The recording continued.

"I promised I would never tell her."

Daniel looked away.

My mother covered her mouth.

And then the words came that changed everything.

"The baby is not who she thinks he is."

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

I stared at the phone.

I stared at my mother.

I stared at Daniel.

And for the first time in my life, I realized the people closest to me might have been protecting a lie instead of protecting me.

The silence after those words felt heavier than anything I had ever experienced.

"The baby is not who she thinks he is."

My daughter's voice recording continued playing through the phone speakers, but my mind was stuck on that one sentence.

I looked at the baby in my arms.

His tiny face was peaceful.

His fingers moved slowly against my sweater.

He had no idea that everyone around him was terrified of the truth.

"What does that mean?"

My voice barely came out.

Nobody answered.

My mother looked at the floor.

Daniel stared at the wall.

And Lily stood there holding the phone like she was carrying something much heavier than a device.

I looked at my husband.

"Daniel."

He flinched when I said his name.

That reaction hurt more than any confession could have.

"Tell me what this means."

He swallowed.

"I didn't want you to find out like this."

My chest tightened.

"Find out what?"

He looked at my mother.

"Marianne."

My mother's eyes filled with tears.

"I tried to stop this from happening."

I laughed once, but there was no happiness in it.

"You tried to stop me from finding out the truth?"

She stepped closer.

"I tried to protect your heart."

"By lying to me?"

Her expression broke.

"I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

The baby began to fuss, and I immediately softened my voice.

I rocked him gently.

But my eyes never left my mother.

She looked at the child.

Then at me.

"Because that baby belongs to someone from your past."

The room seemed to tilt.

I stared at her.

"What are you saying?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

Like he already knew what was coming.

My hands became cold.

"Daniel?"

He didn't answer.

That was when the last piece of trust inside me started breaking apart.

"You knew."

It wasn't a question.

It was a realization.

He slowly looked at me.

"I knew there was something wrong."

My heart dropped.

"Something wrong?"

He moved closer.

"I didn't know everything."

I stepped backward.

The baby was still in my arms.

My daughter was watching.

My mother was crying.

And my husband was standing in front of me trying to explain a secret that had already destroyed our family.

"Then tell me what you do know."

Daniel looked at Lily.

"Can you go upstairs for a minute?"

"No."

Lily's answer was immediate.

Everyone looked at her.

She held the phone against her chest.

"I heard everything before."

My mother wiped her face.

"Lily, sweetheart, this isn't something you should have heard."

She shook her head.

"It was about Mommy."

The room became silent again.

My daughter looked at me.

"I thought you should know."

Those simple words nearly broke me.

I walked toward her slowly.

She looked so small standing there.

But somehow she had been the bravest person in the room.

I hugged her carefully with one arm while holding the baby with the other.

"Thank you for telling me."

She whispered.

"I didn't want everyone to keep secrets from you."

My throat tightened.

Neither did I.

I turned back toward my mother.

"Start from the beginning."

She sat down slowly on the cream-colored sofa.

For the first time, she looked old.

Not just older.

Tired.

Like she had been carrying something for decades.

"The baby was brought to me three days ago."

I frowned.

"Three days?"

She nodded.

"A woman came to my house late at night."

Daniel looked away.

"Who was she?"

My mother hesitated.

"I don't know her name."

"You're lying."

My voice became sharper.

She looked hurt.

"I know what it sounds like."

"No, Mom."

I shook my head.

"I know when you are hiding something."

She lowered her eyes.

"The woman left the baby with me."

"Why?"

My mother's hands trembled.

"Because she said she had no choice."

Daniel finally spoke.

"She said the baby was in danger."

I turned toward him.

"You were there?"

He nodded slowly.

"I came over the next morning."

The betrayal felt deeper.

"You both knew."

"I didn't know who the baby was connected to," he said.

"But you knew there was a secret."

He looked down.

"Yes."

I felt tears forming.

Not because of the baby.

Not because of the mystery.

Because the two people I trusted most had decided together that I couldn't handle the truth.

"What makes this baby connected to my past?"

My mother looked at me.

And then she said a name I had not heard in years.

"Michael."

My breathing stopped.

The room became completely quiet.

Michael.

A name buried deep inside a part of my life I thought I had already closed.

Before Daniel.

Before marriage.

Before children.

Before I became the person everyone expected me to be.

"No."

I whispered.

My mother nodded sadly.

"Yes."

Daniel looked at me.

"You knew him?"

I turned away.

The memories came back before I could stop them.

A young man with kind eyes.

May you like

A person who made me feel understood when I was nineteen.

Someone who disappeared without an explanation.
