Possibly, but not quickly.
Would the criminal investigation continue?
That decision belonged to prosecutors.
Clara pressed her forehead against the cool glass.
She had spent most of her adult life treating self-sufficiency as morality. Her mother had been affectionate, creative, and unreliable with money. Bills accumulated in drawers. Repairs waited until they became emergencies. Clara learned to pay early, arrive early, and anticipate what other people forgot.
Adrian admired that at first. Later he called it rigidity.
The settlement offered a version of control. Money, wording, boundaries, an end date.
Refusing offered uncertainty and the possibility of losing people who had done nothing wrong.
She returned to the conference room and asked for forty-eight hours.
That evening, Clara’s firm lost its largest pending contract.
The developer gave no reason beyond a change in strategic direction. Luis forwarded the email without comment, then called. He said they could survive the loss, but not three more like it.
Clara asked whether he thought she should settle.
Luis said his opinion would be unfair because his salary was involved.
She told him that was exactly why his opinion mattered.
He paused. Then he said he did not want hush money paying his salary, but principles were easier when someone else signed the checks.
It was not the answer Clara wanted.
It was useful anyway.
The next day, a complete copy of Celeste’s messages appeared anonymously in a reporter’s inbox.
The reporter contacted Vivian for comment before publication.
Celeste denied leaking them. Adrian accused Clara through counsel. Clara had not possessed the complete set.
The messages included private conversations unrelated to the wedding: insults about Clara’s clothes, jokes about her mother’s house, sexual exchanges, arguments over money, and Adrian’s descriptions of hotel employees as replaceable.
They also included a photograph of Clara asleep on a flight, taken without her knowledge, with Adrian’s caption suggesting she looked medicated.
The article published selected excerpts but described the rest.
Public opinion shifted with violent speed. The same accounts that called Clara unstable now praised her restraint. Strangers posted the hospital photograph beside the service-entrance still. Commenters demanded Adrian’s arrest, Celeste’s ruin, and boycotts of every Vale property.
Someone found Mateo’s home address.
Someone else posted the name of his teenage daughter.
Clara’s stomach turned when Vivian showed her.
Truth had entered public space and immediately collected cruelty around it.
The hotel received threats. Elena’s personal social-media accounts filled with praise and demands for interviews. Mateo’s family left their home for several days.
Adrian’s lawyers asked the court to prevent further distribution of private materials and suggested Clara had orchestrated the leak to pressure settlement talks.
Clara was questioned again, this time by attorneys and a digital investigator. Her devices, Nora’s messages, and Vivian’s document system were reviewed. No evidence connected them to the leak.
Suspicion remained because innocence did not travel as quickly as implication.
Celeste eventually admitted she had given the full message archive to her younger brother for safekeeping. He sent it to the reporter after seeing Celeste described online as the sole architect of the plan.
He believed exposure would protect her.
Instead, the archive destroyed the narrow cooperation she had negotiated and made her the target of thousands of strangers.
Clara felt no satisfaction.
She also felt no urge to comfort her.
Both reactions seemed honest.
The prosecutor’s office informed Vivian that the investigation remained active but warned that criminal charges would depend on proof of intent, local statutes, and the driver’s testimony. Clara’s injuries were documented. The recordings were strong. The legal result was still uncertain.
Mateo agreed to an interview under a cooperation arrangement that protected him from some, but not all, consequences.
His account matched the footage with one significant addition.
Adrian had contacted him two weeks before the wedding.
The request began as a transportation favor. Adrian wanted Clara delayed after the reception so he could handle a private family issue. Later, the location changed to the west overlook. Mateo objected because of poor service and cold night temperatures.
Adrian told him the plan came from Clara.
According to Adrian, Clara wanted to stage a brief disappearance so she could avoid a private post-wedding ritual Evelyn had organized. Mateo found this odd but believable. Wealthy guests often asked hotel staff to assist with deceptions that seemed pointless from the outside.
On the wedding night, when Adrian and Celeste met him at the service entrance, Mateo realized Clara was not involved.
He should have refused.
Instead, he accepted the key card and followed the route.
He told investigators that Adrian’s influence over staffing had affected his choice. Mateo had applied twice for a supervisory position. Both times, management said Adrian had concerns about his judgment. Adrian then suggested the suite stay as a gesture of trust and hinted that cooperation could change future opportunities.
Mateo believed another vehicle would arrive.
After leaving Clara, he drove half a mile before stopping.
He sat in the sedan with the engine running and watched the dashboard clock. At six minutes, he attempted to call Adrian. No answer. At nine minutes, he called Celeste. No answer. At eleven minutes, he turned around.
Before reaching the overlook, hotel security radioed him to return by the lower road and report to the garage.
The dispatcher had received instructions from Adrian’s assistant.
Mateo obeyed.
Clara had already begun walking uphill.
This did not absolve him. It complicated him.
He had been cowardly, ambitious, frightened for his job, and slow to correct what he knew was wrong. He was not the clean victim the public wanted after deciding he was no longer the villain.
The assistant who redirected Mateo said Adrian called and claimed Clara had been collected by friends. The assistant had no reason to doubt him.

No single employee possessed the whole plan. Each received enough information to perform one small part. Adrian relied on hierarchy, habit, and the reluctance to challenge a man whose family name appeared on the building.
