Chương 6

Employees were instructed not to speak with Clara.

Mateo had been dismissed before sunrise for abandoning a passenger and violating vehicle procedures. His employee account was deactivated, and the room promised by Adrian disappeared from the reservation system.

The company’s actions were not irrational. Mateo had committed a serious violation. Elena had distributed internal surveillance footage without approval. Policies existed for reasons unrelated to Adrian.

But the speed with which the lowest-ranking people were removed created its own message.

Adrian remained employed.

Clara asked to speak with Mateo.

Vivian advised caution. He had his own lawyer through a worker advocacy organization and might consider Clara an adversary. Her injury increased his legal risk. Any direct contact could be misunderstood as pressure.

Clara accepted that and spent the morning answering questions from her staff instead.

Her office operated from the second floor of a converted print shop in Boulder. The space smelled faintly of old paper when the heat came on. Clara had chosen it because the north-facing windows gave steady light for examining materials, though Adrian often complained that the stairwell embarrassed clients.

Luis gathered the staff around the long worktable. No one knew where to look when Clara entered wearing a knit cap over her crystal-free hair and sunglasses against the concussion headache.

She told them the wedding had ended, she was physically safe, and the public reports were incomplete. She would be working reduced hours for several days. Vivian had prepared guidance for client inquiries.

One junior designer began crying.

Clara nearly comforted her, then felt a small, ugly flare of irritation. She did not want to manage someone else’s feelings about what had happened to her. The irritation passed, leaving guilt behind.

Luis noticed. He moved the meeting forward by asking practical questions about deadlines.

Two clients postponed presentations. One expressed support. Another requested written assurance that Clara remained able to perform her duties and that no Vale family dispute would affect project financing.

That client’s concern was not cruel. The Vale hospitality group had referred nearly a third of Clara’s work during the previous eighteen months.

Adrian had never given her contracts directly. He introduced her to developers, praised her work in rooms she could not enter on her own, and placed her firm on preferred-vendor lists. Clara had told herself that relationships opened doors for everyone in their industry.

Now every opened door looked conditional.

She spent the afternoon reviewing the firm’s revenue with Luis. Losing Vale-connected work would not bankrupt them immediately, but it would require cuts within six months. Clara had hired two people that year based on projects expected to begin after the wedding.

Luis asked whether those projects were still real.

Clara said she did not know.

He did not reassure her. He began listing expenses they could reduce.

His practicality steadied her more than sympathy would have.

Three days after the wedding, Celeste contacted Vivian.

She requested a private conversation with Clara and offered information about Adrian’s actions. Her lawyer said Celeste had been manipulated, feared for her safety, and wished to correct the false impression created by the hotel footage.

Clara read the request at her kitchen table while eating dry cereal from a mug. She had not returned to the apartment she shared with Adrian. Nora had brought her to the small house Clara inherited from her mother outside Boulder, where the pipes knocked whenever the shower ran and the kitchen drawer required a hip bump to close.

The house had been rented for years. Clara kept meaning to sell it.

Now it was the only place no one could ask her to leave.

She told Vivian she would not meet Celeste alone.

The conversation took place at Vivian’s office with both lawyers present. Celeste arrived in black trousers and a cream sweater, her hair pulled into a low knot. Without satin and warm hotel light, she looked less elegant and more tired. A small blemish near her chin had been covered badly.

She sat across from Clara and placed both hands around a glass of water.

Celeste did not apologize immediately. Through her lawyer, she explained that Adrian had resumed contact with her four months earlier. He told her his engagement to Clara was effectively over but that ending it publicly before the wedding would create financial and family complications. He claimed Clara refused to accept the relationship had failed and threatened to damage him professionally.

Celeste had believed some of this because Adrian supported it with selected messages.

He showed her arguments in which Clara questioned his late nights and asked whether Celeste had returned to his life. He removed his responses. He described Clara’s concern as surveillance. He told Celeste that Clara had once threatened to disappear before the wedding and embarrass both families.

Clara had said nothing of the kind.

She had once told Adrian she sometimes fantasized about driving past every exit and being unreachable for a day. The remark came after his mother revised the guest list without asking and added forty-seven people. Clara had been holding a bag of takeout noodles when she said it. Adrian laughed and told her she would become bored before reaching Wyoming.

He had turned that tired joke into evidence.

Celeste admitted she helped plan the abandonment.

She said Adrian proposed a delay of fifteen minutes. Another car would collect Clara. By the time Clara reached the chapel, the guests would be restless and Adrian would announce that the wedding could not continue because Clara was overwhelmed. Celeste believed the public confusion would allow him to end the engagement later without exposing their renewed relationship.

Clara asked why Celeste was already in the wedding suite wearing a robe.

Celeste’s fingers tightened around the glass.

She said Adrian had asked her to wait there because the lower floors were crowded. He planned to speak with Clara privately after the postponement.

Clara looked at Celeste’s lawyer.

The lawyer looked down at her notes.

Celeste corrected herself. She and Adrian had expected to spend the night together after Clara was taken to another hotel for rest.
