Chương 2

They began crossing the lawn.

Behind them, the helicopter blades turned with diminishing force. Lena remained near the aircraft, one hand against the front of her tactical winter coat, watching the entrance.

The Reynolds relatives stood in a loose line above the steps. Some looked at Kesha. Most looked at the children.

Their attention moved from one face to the next.

Noah’s steel-gray eyes.

Ethan’s crooked smile.

Sophia’s dimple.

Olivia’s expression, cautious and severe in a way Daniel’s had been whenever he tried not to laugh.

Harriet’s fingers opened.

The remaining stem of her champagne glass fell from her hand. She had somehow continued holding it after the bowl shattered. It struck the stone with a smaller sound.

Sophia flinched.

“Is she our grandmother?” she asked quietly.

Harriet heard her.

The old woman’s face changed. Not much. A tightening near the mouth. A tremor beneath one eye. Her body remained upright, dignified by habit if not by strength.

Kesha stopped at the bottom of the steps.

“Merry Christmas, Mrs. Reynolds.”

Harriet looked at her at last.

“You should not be here.”

The words were low, nearly lost beneath the slowing blades.

Kesha had expected denial. Anger. Perhaps a command for security.

She had not expected the sentence to sound like a plea.

Behind Harriet, the blonde woman in red looked from Kesha to Daniel.

“Daniel?”

Daniel did not answer.

His confident expression had disappeared. The velvet ring box remained open in his hand. The diamond inside caught the chandelier light, absurdly bright.

Kesha led the children up the steps.

Her boots pressed into snow and then touched stone. Broken crystal lay near Harriet’s silver shoes. Olivia stared at it, so Kesha guided her around the shards.

Harriet found enough control to address the guests.

“Everyone inside. Now.”

No one obeyed immediately.

An older man with a broad chest and a red bow tie lifted his phone. Lena’s voice came from the lawn, clear and official.

“Sir, put the device away.”

The man lowered it, though not before Kesha saw the red recording light.

The children entered the grand hall first.

Warmth closed around them. The room smelled of fir, wood smoke, champagne, and the faint waxy sweetness of white roses. A large Christmas tree rose nearly to the balcony, covered in gold ribbon and glass ornaments. The polished stone floor reflected hundreds of warm lights.

The guests moved backward as Kesha and the children advanced. Their silence was not complete. Fabric whispered. Someone breathed too quickly. A woman near the champagne table set down her glass with deliberate care.

Daniel stood beside the fireplace.

His girlfriend’s hand was still on his arm, but her fingers no longer rested comfortably. They had stiffened against the black cloth of his uniform.

Kesha stopped several feet from him.

Olivia tightened her grip.

Daniel looked at Kesha first. His eyes moved across her uniform, her face, the blonde hair secured in a low military bun. There was recognition, but it seemed delayed by disbelief.

Then he looked at Noah.

Noah looked back openly.

Daniel’s gaze shifted to Ethan, who stood half behind his brother.

To Sophia.

To Olivia.

He became pale so gradually that Kesha could see the blood leaving his face. His mouth opened, but nothing came out.

The blonde woman withdrew her hand from his arm.

“Daniel,” she said. “Who are they?”

His fingers loosened around the velvet box.

It fell beside his polished boots with a soft impact.

Kesha rested one hand on Olivia’s shoulder. She had prepared a dozen versions of what she might say. Some were precise. Some were cruel. One was only three words long.

None of them survived the sight of the ring on the floor.

She waited until Daniel looked directly into her eyes.

“Merry Christmas, Colonel,” she said. “Meet the four children you abandoned.”

Noah took one uncertain step toward him.

Daniel moved backward.

The movement was small, almost involuntary, but Noah saw it.

He stopped.

Kesha felt that small rejection travel through her son’s body. His shoulders pulled inward. His chin lowered. The crooked smile vanished.

Rage rose in her with such force that the room seemed to narrow.

She had promised herself she would not shout. She had promised the children that nobody would hurt them. She had promised Lena she would not turn a necessary truth into a public execution.

Then Daniel whispered, “That’s impossible.”

Noah heard that too.

Kesha turned to Lena, who had entered the hall and now stood near the doorway.

“Take them to the side room.”

“I want to stay,” Sophia said.

“You’re going with Officer Brooks.”

“But he’s—”

“Kesha,” Daniel said.

She looked at him.

He had spoken her name as if it belonged to another life.

Lena crouched beside the children. “There’s hot chocolate through those doors. I saw marshmallows the size of golf balls.”

“That sounds dangerous,” Noah said automatically.

Lena’s mouth softened. “I’ll conduct an inspection.”

Ethan took Noah’s sleeve. Sophia resisted until Olivia moved, still watching Daniel over her shoulder. Lena guided all four children toward the library adjoining the hall.

Noah looked back once.

Daniel did not move toward him.

When the library doors closed, conversation broke across the room in frightened fragments.

Harriet stepped forward. “This gathering is over.”

The blonde woman ignored her. She stared at Daniel.

“Are they yours?”

“I don’t know.”

“They look exactly like you.”

“Elise—”

“Do not say my name like I am embarrassing you.”

Daniel bent to retrieve the ring box. His hand missed it the first time.

Kesha watched him close the lid. That practical movement, performed while four children waited in the next room to learn whether their father wanted them, was somehow worse than his disbelief.

Harriet faced Kesha.

“You brought children into this house to stage an accusation.”

“I brought Daniel’s children to meet their family.”

“You arrived in a government helicopter.”

“I arrived as an invited guest at a registered landing site following an official ceremony. My transportation was authorized.”
