Chương 8

Sometimes it meant everything was happening carefully.
Adrian moved slowly toward the wall beside the door.
He did not reach for the handle.
He waited.
Whoever was outside expected someone to react.
The easiest way to lose was to behave exactly as the other person predicted.
A few seconds passed.
Then the door handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
Whoever was outside was not trying to force it open.
They were checking whether it was locked.
Adrian looked at Elena.
Her face had gone pale.
Not because of the person outside.
Because she knew something.
"Who is it?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
"That's not an answer."
"It is."
Her voice cracked slightly.
"I don't know who is on the other side."
The handle stopped moving.
Then a voice came through the door.
"Elena."
She closed her eyes.
The reaction was immediate.
Adrian saw it.
Recognition.
Fear.
Memory.
The voice was male.
Older.
Controlled.
"Open the door."
Elena stepped back.
Claire looked at her.
"You know him."
Elena did not answer.
"Elena," the voice repeated.
"Don't make this harder."
Adrian felt something shift.
Not because of the threat.
Because of the way the man spoke.
He was not angry.
He sounded disappointed.
That was more dangerous.
People who were angry often lost control.
People who were disappointed usually believed they had earned the right to control others.
"Who is he?" Adrian asked.
Elena swallowed.
"Daniel."
The name settled over the room.
Adrian looked toward the door.
The man outside was the same person Elena had described.
The person who was supposed to be loyal.
The person connected to Marcus.
"Daniel," Adrian called.
Silence.
Then:
"Adrian."
Hearing his name spoken by someone who should not have known he was there made the room colder.
"You know I'm here."
"I know."
"How?"
Daniel did not answer.
Adrian almost smiled.
Of course.
The man had always been careful.
Even twenty years ago, Daniel had never volunteered information.
He only gave people what he wanted them to have.
"Open the door," Daniel said.
"Why?"
"Because we need to talk."
"People who need to talk usually don't cut the lights."
A pause.
Then Daniel replied:
"I didn't cut the lights."
Adrian looked at Claire.
She looked back.
Neither believed him.
But neither ignored it.
"Then who did?" Adrian asked.
Another pause.
Longer this time.
"That's why you need to open the door."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Tell me something first."
"What?"
"Where is Marcus?"
The hallway became silent.
Completely silent.
Even Daniel stopped breathing for a second.
That was the answer.
Not a confession.
Not proof.
A reaction.
A reaction Adrian had spent years waiting for.
"You shouldn't ask questions you don't want answered," Daniel said.
Adrian felt anger rise.
Not explosive.
Something quieter.
Something older.
"You don't get to say that."
"I do."
"No."
Adrian's voice hardened.
"You lost that right when you disappeared."
Behind him, Claire watched him carefully.
She had never seen him like this.
Not angry.
Not threatening.
Something else.
A wound that had learned how to speak.
Daniel remained quiet.
Then:
"Adrian, Marcus made choices."
The sentence almost made Adrian laugh.
Almost.
"That's what everyone said."
"Because it's true."
"You weren't there."
"I was."
The words stopped him.
Adrian did not move.
Neither did Claire.
Neither did Elena.
Daniel continued.
"That is what you never understood."
The door remained closed between them.
"Marcus wasn't betrayed by strangers."
Adrian's hand tightened.
"Who?"
Daniel did not answer immediately.
That was worse.
Because the delay suggested he was choosing what damage to cause.
"Open the door."
"No."
"Then you will never know."
"Maybe."
Adrian looked at the lock.
"But you are still outside."
The silence that followed was different.
A small shift.
A change in power.
Daniel had expected curiosity to bring Adrian closer.
Instead, Adrian had chosen distance.
For the first time, Daniel had to react.
"You're more like him than you think."
Adrian felt the words hit harder than he wanted.
"Don't compare me to him."
"Why?"
"Because you don't get to."
Daniel sighed.
A tired sound.
Almost human.
That bothered Adrian more than cruelty would have.
"I didn't want tonight to happen this way."
Adrian looked at Elena.
"What does that mean?"
She looked away.
A small movement.
But enough.
She knew something else.
"Elena."
She said nothing.
"Look at me."
Slowly, she did.
"How long have you known Daniel was here tonight?"
Her face changed.
And Adrian understood.
She had not just discovered the trap.
She had been running from it.
"I didn't know he would come here."
"That isn't what I asked."
She looked down.
"I knew he was watching."
Claire stepped back slightly.
The betrayal on her face was visible.
"You let us walk into this?"
Elena shook her head.
"No."
"Then explain."
"I tried to stop it."
"By giving him a napkin?"
"I didn't know what else to do."
Her voice broke.
"I am not like you two."
The words came out sharper than she expected.
She wiped at her face quickly, embarrassed by the emotion.
"I don't have people who answer when I call."
Nobody responded.
Because it was true.
Adrian had spent so much time judging choices from positions of power that he sometimes forgot what desperation looked like from below.
Daniel knocked once on the door.
The sound brought them back.
"Adrian."
The calm voice returned.
"If you leave through that hallway, you won't make it past the stairs."
Adrian looked toward the ceiling.
Daniel knew the building.
He knew where they were.
He knew how they would move.
"Why tell me?"
"Because I don't want you dead."
"That is supposed to comfort me?"
"No."
Daniel's voice lowered.
"It is supposed to make you understand that the people who put you here are not the people you think they are."
Adrian stared at the door.
The words were designed to create doubt.
But doubt was not the same as truth.
May you like
He had learned that lesson from Marcus.
The hardest lies were the ones built around something real.
