Chương 2

That worried him more than the note.
A person who wanted attention would have waited.
A person who was afraid would have disappeared.
Elena was doing neither.
She was trying to survive.
"Who is she?" Claire asked.
"Who?"
"The waitress."
"I don't know."
Claire looked toward Elena.
"She knows you."
"No."
"She knows enough to risk something."
Adrian looked at the napkin again.
The handwriting was uneven.
Not rushed.
Not careless.
Someone had taken time to write it.
Someone had expected him to receive it.
The warning was not a rescue.
It was an invitation to react.
And someone wanted to see what he would do.
The lights flickered above them.
The restaurant went quiet for half a second.
Then people laughed nervously.
A child near the back table asked his mother if the power was going out.
The mother told him no.
She sounded like she was trying to convince herself.
Adrian looked toward the hallway.
The emergency exit sign glowed above the door.
The night exit.
The door everyone would ignore unless they were trying to leave unseen.
Two men near the entrance shifted at the same time.
They were not looking at Adrian.
That was the problem.
People watching a target usually looked at the target.
People controlling a situation watched everything around the target.
Claire noticed them too.
Her face lost color.
Only slightly.
But enough.
"Adrian."
He looked at her.
"Do not go through that door."
The words were quiet.
Not a warning.
A request.
That difference bothered him.
"What happens if I don't?"
Claire opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
A second later, someone in the kitchen dropped a tray.
The crash echoed through the restaurant.
Several guests turned toward the sound.
The two men near the entrance moved.
Not quickly.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
Adrian stood.
Every instinct in his body told him not to.
Every instinct in his career told him that following the expected move was how people ended up dead.
He looked at Elena across the room.
She was frozen beside a table, holding an empty tray against her chest.
She looked terrified.
Not because Adrian had noticed her.
Because someone else had.
The restaurant suddenly felt smaller.
The exits felt farther away.
The people around him were no longer strangers enjoying dinner.
They were pieces on a board Adrian had not realized he was standing on.
And somewhere inside the building, someone was waiting for him to make the first move.
The first move came from the man near the entrance.
He reached toward his jacket, not fast enough to look like panic, but fast enough to confirm Adrian's suspicion that the room had already changed.
Adrian stepped away from the table instead of toward the exit.
The decision created a small ripple through the restaurant.
A waiter carrying plates stopped halfway between two tables.
A woman near the bar looked up from her phone.
Claire remained seated for one extra second, watching Adrian as if she was trying to understand whether he was protecting himself or testing everyone else.
"Sit down," she whispered.
Adrian did not look at her.
"That would be what they expect."
"Maybe because it's the smart thing."
"Smart things get predictable."
Claire pushed her chair back slowly.
For the first time that evening, she looked like someone who had forgotten how to perform confidence.
The men near the entrance noticed her movement.
That was enough.
Adrian saw it.
Their attention shifted toward Claire before returning to him.
The connection was brief.
But it existed.
"Stay here," Adrian said.
Claire's eyes narrowed.
"You think I am safer at the table?"
"No."
The honesty surprised her.
"You are safer where I can see you."
The answer bothered her because it sounded less like protection and more like possession.
She opened her mouth to argue, but the sound of a glass breaking near the kitchen interrupted her.
The lights flickered again.
This time, they did not return immediately.
The restaurant fell into darkness.
Not complete darkness.
The emergency lights along the floor turned on, casting everyone in a strange red glow.
People reacted the way people always reacted when a comfortable place suddenly became uncertain.
Some laughed.
Some froze.
Some reached for the person beside them.
A few stood up and moved without knowing where they were going.
Adrian moved with purpose.
He grabbed Claire's arm and pulled her away from the open space between tables.
She resisted for half a second.
Then she felt the seriousness in his grip and followed.
"Where are we going?" she asked.
"Somewhere with fewer people."
"That's exactly what the person setting this up wants."
Adrian stopped.
The fact that she had said it immediately made him look at her differently.
"Good."
"Good?"
"You are thinking."
Claire stared at him.
"You say that like you expected me not to."
"I expected you to panic."
"I am panicking."
Her voice remained quiet.
That was what made it believable.
"I'm just not giving you the satisfaction of seeing it."
For a moment, Adrian almost respected her.
Almost.
Then a voice came from behind the bar.
"Mr. Voss."
The restaurant manager stood there holding a flashlight.
His face was pale.
"I need you to come with me."
Adrian did not move.
"Why?"
"There is a situation in the back."
"What situation?"
The manager looked toward the kitchen.
Then back at Adrian.
The hesitation was too long.
Adrian released Claire's arm.
"Nobody goes anywhere."
The manager swallowed.
"I don't think you understand."
"No."
Adrian looked around the darkened restaurant.
"I think you don't understand."
The manager lowered his voice.
"Your security team isn't answering."
The information landed differently.
Adrian had expected an attack.
He had expected pressure.
He had expected someone to try to force him into a bad decision.
He had not expected his own people to disappear from the equation.
That changed the shape of the problem.
Claire noticed.
"What is it?"
May you like
Adrian did not answer immediately.
He looked toward the front windows.
