Chương 4
Lily shrugged.
"People ignore things until they can't."
Mara carried that sentence with her all the way home.
Later that night, after Lily was asleep, Mara opened the email again.
This time she noticed something she had missed before.
The message had been sent from Daniel's personal account.
Not his company address.
And beneath his name was a signature line that had been removed halfway through.
There was no title.
No CEO.
No mention of Vale Holdings.
Just Daniel Vale.
For the first time in years, Mara wondered if Daniel was not contacting her as the man who controlled the company.
She wondered if he was contacting her as someone who was afraid of what the company had become.
The thought did not make her trust him.
It only made the situation more dangerous.
Because if Daniel was afraid, then whatever was hidden was bigger than a missing document.
And somewhere inside Vale Holdings, someone had already noticed Mara Ellis had started looking.
Mara did not sleep well that night.
She woke twice because of sounds that were not actually there.
The first time, she thought someone had knocked on the apartment door.
The second time, she thought she heard Lily crying.
Both times, she found the apartment quiet.
Lily was asleep.
The hallway was empty.
The only thing waiting for her was the feeling that something had shifted and would not move back into place.
By morning, the feeling had turned into a decision.
Mara called her bank before work and asked about her savings account.
Not because she expected anything.
Because she needed to know what she could survive if everything around her became unstable.
The woman on the phone spoke in the careful voice of someone who answered hundreds of calls a week.
"Your account is active."
"Has there been any unusual activity?"
"No."
Mara stared at the kitchen counter while she listened.
A bowl of cereal sat untouched because Lily had gotten distracted drawing a picture on a napkin.
"What would happen if I needed to move money quickly?"
The woman explained the process.
Nothing dramatic.
Nothing suspicious.
Just normal banking procedures.
But after the call ended, Mara stood there for a while.
She hated that fear could make ordinary things feel like preparation for a disaster.
Lily walked into the kitchen carrying her backpack.
"Are you mad?"
Mara looked over.
"What?"
"You have your serious face."
"I have a serious face?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Usually when you are pretending you aren't worried."
Mara smiled despite herself.
"Is that what I do?"
"Yeah."
Lily sat down and pushed her cereal bowl away.
"You do this thing with your eyebrows."
Mara touched her forehead.
"I do not."
"You do."
For a moment, Mara forgot about Daniel.
She forgot about missing documents and old partnerships.
She was just a mother arguing with her daughter about whether her face gave away her feelings.
Then her phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
She almost ignored it.
Then she answered.
"Ms. Ellis?"
"Yes."
"This is Robert Kane from Vale Holdings' compliance office."
Mara went still.
"How did you get my number?"
"It is in company records."
"I have never worked for Vale Holdings."
"No."
The pause that followed felt deliberate.
"But your family has a longer connection to the company than you may realize."
Mara looked at Lily.
Her daughter was watching her.
"I can't talk right now."
"That's understandable."
"Why are you calling?"
"I wanted to inform you that there may be misunderstandings regarding documents you recently received."
"Misunderstandings?"
"Yes."
"What kind?"
Another pause.
The kind people used when they wanted to say something without being responsible for saying it.
"Some records are incomplete."
"According to who?"
"Ms. Ellis."
"According to who?"
The man exhaled softly.
"I think it would be better if we discussed this privately."
Mara almost ended the call.
Instead, she asked, "Are you warning me or threatening me?"
The answer came quickly.
"No."
Too quickly.
"I am trying to prevent unnecessary harm."
The words bothered her.
Not because they sounded threatening.
Because they sounded practiced.
"Thank you for your concern," Mara said.
She did not have an attorney.
Not yet.
But the silence after she said it told her something.
Robert Kane did not sound surprised.
When she hung up, Lily was still watching.
"Who was that?"
"Someone from Uncle Daniel's company."
"Are you in trouble?"
Mara hated that her daughter asked the question so calmly.
"No."
It came out automatically.
Then she corrected herself.
"I don't know."
Lily nodded slowly.
Mara wondered when her child had become old enough to recognize uncertainty.
At work, she barely finished anything.
She opened documents and read the same lines repeatedly.
She answered emails and forgot what she had written.
Her coworker Jenna stopped beside her desk around lunch.
"You okay?"
Mara looked up.
Jenna had worked beside her for four years.
She was one of the few people who knew when Mara was pretending.
"Yeah."
Jenna raised an eyebrow.
"That was the least convincing yeah I've heard this week."
Mara almost told her everything.
Almost.
But she stopped.
Not because she did not trust Jenna.
Because saying something out loud made it real.
"I have a family situation."
Jenna nodded.
She did not push.
That was one of the reasons Mara liked her.
"Need anything?"
"No."
"Okay."
Jenna started walking away, then turned.
"And for the record, your serious face thing is real."
Mara laughed quietly.
"Apparently everyone knows."
"Everyone except you."
The small conversation helped.
Not enough to solve anything.
But enough to remind her that not every person around her was waiting to judge.
After work, Mara met Daniel at a public restaurant near his office.
She chose the location.
Not him.
That mattered.
Daniel was already seated when she arrived.
He had chosen a table near the back.
Away from the windows.
Away from other customers.
Mara noticed.
"So this is private."
Daniel looked up.
"I thought you would prefer it."
May you like
"I prefer honesty."
He looked down briefly.
