Chương 2

The apartment was quiet except for the refrigerator.

She picked up her phone and searched the number printed at the bottom of the letter.

It belonged to a law firm in Manhattan.

Not a random office.

Not a collection agency.

A firm that handled corporate disputes.

Mara's first thought was that Daniel had found another way to pressure her.

Her second thought was that there was a reason he had looked uncomfortable when she mentioned the card.

She pushed that thought away.

She did not want to build stories from pieces she did not understand.

That was how people got hurt.

Her mother had always told her that.

Trust what people do, not what you hope they mean.

The next morning, Mara called the number.

A woman named Evelyn Hart answered.

"Mara Ellis?"

"Yes."

There was a pause.

Not a long one.

Just long enough for Mara to notice.

"I was expecting you to call sooner."

Mara sat at her desk at work, staring at the spreadsheet open on her computer.

"What is this about?"

"Before I discuss details, I need to confirm something."

"Okay."

"Your mother's full name was Caroline Ellis?"

Mara stopped moving.

The office noise around her faded into a dull blur.

"Yes."

"And your father's name was Thomas Ellis?"

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

"Why?"

Evelyn did not answer immediately.

"Because your parents were listed in records connected to Vale Holdings before Daniel Vale became CEO."

Mara looked toward the glass wall separating her desk from the rest of the office.

People walked by carrying coffee and talking about deadlines.

A normal morning.

A normal life.

Except suddenly she was hearing a sentence that did not fit anywhere in the life she knew.

"My parents never had anything to do with Vale Holdings."

"That is what the current records suggest."

The word current stayed with her.

Not old.

Not original.

Current.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying there are documents that appear to have been removed from the company archives."

Mara stood slowly.

"Removed by who?"

"I don't know."

"You called me."

"I called you because your name is attached to them."

Mara looked at the unopened folder beside her desk.

For years she had believed Daniel's success had nothing to do with her.

She had believed she was the person who left behind a family that never wanted her around.

Now someone was telling her that the story she had been given might have missing pages.

"What kind of documents?"

Evelyn lowered her voice.

"Documents involving ownership."

Mara closed her eyes.

The image that came back was not Daniel's face.

It was Lily at the dinner table.

Holding herself still.

Waiting to see whether her mother would protect her.

"When can we meet?" Mara asked.

"Tomorrow afternoon."

"Why not today?"

Another pause.

"Because after last night, I believe Daniel already knows you received this letter."

Mara felt the room tilt slightly.

"How would he know?"

Evelyn did not answer.

And that silence told Mara more than words could have.

That evening, Daniel Vale appeared outside her apartment building.

He stood beneath the entrance light without an umbrella, his expensive coat darkened by rain.

Mara stopped before opening the door fully.

Lily was inside doing homework.

Daniel looked past Mara toward the apartment.

"Can we talk?"

Mara kept one hand on the door.

"About what?"

His jaw tightened.

For the first time in years, he did not look like the man who controlled every room he entered.

He looked like someone who had arrived too late.

"About what you found."

Mara felt her heartbeat change.

She had not told him anything.

The rain continued falling between them.

And Daniel realized from her expression that he had just revealed more than he intended.

Daniel realized from her expression that he had just revealed more than he intended.

Mara did not move aside.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

The hallway light above them flickered once, and somewhere on the second floor a child laughed behind a closed apartment door.

The ordinary sound made the moment feel even stranger.

Daniel looked older than he had at dinner.

Not weaker.

Mara had known him too long to mistake discomfort for vulnerability.

But the certainty he usually carried was gone.

"You know about the letter," she said.

Daniel looked down briefly.

"I know Evelyn Hart contacted you."

"That wasn't my question."

His eyes returned to hers.

"You always did that."

"Did what?"

"Asked the question you wanted answered, not the one people tried to give you."

Mara almost laughed.

It was such a Daniel thing to say.

Even now, standing outside her apartment after letting something slip, he still sounded like he was evaluating her.

"I want you to leave."

"Mara."

"No."

Her voice surprised both of them.

It was not loud.

It did not need to be.

Daniel glanced toward the apartment door.

"Is Lily here?"

The way he asked bothered her more than if he had demanded something.

"Why?"

"Because this isn't a conversation for a child to overhear."

Mara stepped closer.

"Funny."

Daniel looked at her.

"What's funny?"

"You were perfectly comfortable humiliating her in front of a room full of adults."

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But she saw it.

A flash of irritation followed by something else.

Something closer to regret.

"I shouldn't have said what I said."

Mara waited.

She hated that part of herself still wanted the apology.

Not for her.

For Lily.

But Daniel only stood there with rain dripping from his hair, and the silence between them became another choice.

"You shouldn't have," she said.

Then she closed the door.

For the next hour, Mara did almost nothing.

She sat at the kitchen table while Lily worked through a math assignment nearby, occasionally erasing numbers so aggressively that the paper tore.

Mara watched her daughter press a finger against the small rip and smooth it flat.

"Need help?" Mara asked.

Lily shook her head.

"No."

May you like

A minute passed.

"Actually, maybe."
