Chương 6

“What about it?”
Daniel spoke carefully.
“Your father placed certain documents and financial protections through it.”
“And Thomas knows?”
“He suspects.”
Mara looked at Claire.
“And you?”
Claire shook her head.
“I didn’t know about any of this.”
Daniel believed her.
Mara noticed.
That mattered.
Because Daniel had questioned Claire before.
But now he did not.
“Why show up at the wedding?” Mara asked.
Daniel looked at the watch.
“Because this was the last place I could reach her before the transfer.”
“What transfer?”
“The legal transfer that happens when she signs the marriage documents.”
Claire stared.
“That’s not true.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Isn’t it?”
Claire went still.
Mara noticed.
She always noticed.
“What did you sign?”
Claire looked down.
“Nothing important.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“It was paperwork for the wedding.”
“What paperwork?”
Claire did not speak.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
“What did you sign, Claire?”
Claire’s eyes moved around the room.
At the dress.
The flowers.
The watch.
The people who had come to celebrate.
“I signed a document Thomas said was related to combining our financial planning after marriage.”
Mara felt cold.
“You signed something without reading it?”
“I read it.”
“Then why are you scared?”
Claire had no response.
Daniel reached into his jacket again.
This time he removed a folded copy of a document.
“I thought this might happen.”
Claire looked at him.
“You brought it?”
“I made a copy before you signed.”
Mara took it from him.
She did not know exactly what she was looking at.
Legal language blurred together.
Names.
Dates.
Clauses.
But one line caught her attention.
A line Claire had underlined.
Transfer of authority.
“Claire.”
Her sister looked away.
“I thought it meant something else.”
Mara looked at her.
“You thought?”
Claire’s voice broke.
“I wanted it to mean something else.”
That was the first time Mara saw the truth of her sister’s mistake.
Not stupidity.
Not carelessness.
Hope.
Hope had made Claire ignore the things fear would have forced her to see.
Another knock came.
This time nobody moved.
Then Thomas spoke from the other side of the door.
“Claire.”
Her entire body went still.
His voice was warm.
Familiar.
The same voice that had made everyone trust him.
“I know Daniel is here.”
No one breathed.
“I think we need to talk.”
Mara looked at her sister.
Claire looked at the door.
And for the first time that morning, she looked like she was afraid of the person she was supposed to marry.
Claire did not move toward the door.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The silence was so complete that Mara could hear the faint scrape of Thomas’s shoes on the other side of the wood.
He was waiting.
That was what unsettled her most.
Not the fact that he was there.
Not even the fact that he knew.
It was the patience.
Thomas had always been patient.
Mara remembered that now.
He never interrupted anyone.
He never raised his voice.
He always waited until people finished explaining themselves, and then he responded with exactly the right amount of concern.
At the time, she had called it maturity.
Now she wondered if it had been control.
Claire walked toward the door slowly.
“Mara,” Evelyn whispered.
It was not a command.
It was a warning.
Mara reached out and grabbed her sister’s arm.
Claire stopped.
“You don’t have to do this alone.”
Claire looked at her.
The expression on her face almost broke Mara’s anger.
Because Claire looked relieved.
Not because the problem was solved.
Because for the first time in years, she did not have to stand in front of it by herself.
Thomas knocked again.
“Claire.”
His voice remained gentle.
That almost made it worse.
“Open the door.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“What do I say?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Do not lie.”
Claire gave a small, bitter smile.
“That advice would have been useful three years ago.”
Daniel accepted the criticism.
“I know.”
Mara noticed something between them.
A history that was not just about secrets.
A history of two people who had both made mistakes and were now trapped by them.
Claire opened the door.
Thomas stood in the hallway wearing the suit Mara had complimented an hour earlier.
The same dark jacket.
The same perfectly arranged hair.
The same calm expression she had trusted.
But something was different.
His eyes moved through the room quickly.
He saw Daniel.
The watch.
The document.
Then Mara.
He understood exactly what had happened.
“Claire,” he said quietly.
“You brought them into this.”
The words surprised Mara.
Not because of what he said.
Because of who he blamed first.
Claire looked at him.
“I didn’t bring anyone.”
Thomas stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
“You should have told me Daniel was coming.”
Mara stared at him.
“You should have told her why Daniel was coming.”
Thomas looked at Mara.
For the first time, she saw irritation beneath the calm.
Only for a second.
But it was there.
“I understand why you’re upset.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Mara.”
The way he said her name bothered her.
Like he was trying to calm a child.
“Don’t do that.”
Thomas paused.
“Do what?”
“Act like you’re the reasonable one because you speak quietly.”
The room went still.
Claire looked at Mara.
Not angry.
Surprised.
Thomas’s expression changed slightly.
“I think everyone is emotional right now.”
“That’s convenient.”
“What is?”
“Calling people emotional when they start asking questions.”
Thomas looked at Claire.
“You see what’s happening?”
Claire frowned.
“What?”
“He’s making you suspicious of everyone.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Do not turn this around.”
Thomas looked at him.
“Still protecting them?”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“I’m trying to stop you from repeating what happened before.”
The sentence changed Thomas’s face.
Only slightly.
But Mara saw it.
A crack.
A reaction too fast to hide.
“What does that mean?” she asked.
Thomas looked at her.
May you like
“It means Daniel has spent years blaming himself for something he couldn’t control.”
Daniel’s expression tightened.
