Chương 5

“He’s been calling me for the last twenty minutes.”
Claire stared at the screen.
“He knows.”
Daniel did not answer.
He did not need to.
A second later, Claire’s own phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at it.
The message was from Thomas.
Claire opened it slowly.
Her face changed as she read.
“What does it say?” Mara asked.
Claire handed her the phone.
The message was only one sentence.
I know Daniel is there, and I know what he brought.
Mara felt the room tilt.
The wedding downstairs continued.
The music played.
People waited.
And somewhere below them, the man Claire was supposed to marry already knew the secret they had spent years trying to hide.
Claire stared at the phone as if the words might rearrange themselves if she waited long enough.
They did not.
Mara watched her sister’s face carefully.
She expected anger.
She expected panic.
Instead, Claire looked tired.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Just tired.
“How long have you known he was watching?” Mara asked.
Claire looked up.
“I didn’t.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Claire opened her mouth and closed it again.
Daniel stepped in.
“Thomas has always been careful.”
Mara turned toward him.
“You keep saying things like that.”
“Because they’re true.”
“No, because they’re convenient.”
Daniel accepted that without argument.
Mara hated that.
She wanted him to defend himself.
She wanted someone to make this easier by being obviously wrong.
Instead, everyone in the room seemed to be carrying a piece of a disaster they had created together.
Evelyn looked at Claire’s phone.
“Did he threaten you?”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“Then what does he want?”
Claire looked at the message again.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel looked toward the door.
“Yes, you do.”
The accusation was quiet.
Claire’s eyes hardened.
“You don’t know what I know.”
“No.”
Daniel paused.
“But I know what your father knew.”
The mention of her father changed something in Claire.
Her shoulders dropped.
Like she had spent years pretending she was strong enough to hold a weight that had always been too heavy.
Mara noticed the wedding ring on Claire’s finger.
The diamond caught the light.
A beautiful thing.
A thing that suddenly looked like a question.
“Take it off,” Mara said.
Everyone looked at her.
Claire blinked.
“What?”
“If you think there’s even a chance Thomas is involved, take it off.”
Claire stared at the ring.
Her hand moved slightly.
Then stopped.
“You don’t understand.”
“You’re right.”
Mara’s voice softened.
“I don’t.”
Claire looked away.
“I spent three years trying to prove he wasn’t like them.”
“Who?”
“My father’s enemies.”
The answer surprised Mara.
Not because it made sense.
Because it revealed how long Claire had been living inside this nightmare.
While Mara had been building a normal life.
While Mara had been complaining about work and apartment repairs and forgetting to call their mother back.
Claire had been investigating the man she planned to marry.
“You were testing him,” Mara said.
Claire nodded.
“At first.”
“And then?”
Claire touched the ring.
“Then I fell in love with him.”
The honesty created an uncomfortable silence.
Daniel looked down.
Evelyn turned away.
Mara understood why.
Because love was inconvenient.
It complicated every clean answer.
If Thomas was a monster, Claire could leave.
If Thomas was innocent, Daniel’s arrival had destroyed a wedding.
If the truth was somewhere in between, nobody knew what they were supposed to do.
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
It was Daniel’s.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Who is it?” Evelyn asked.
Daniel did not answer.
He stepped away and answered.
“Hello.”
The room stayed silent.
Mara watched his face.
She could not hear the person on the other end.
She could only see the effect of the words.
A tightening around his eyes.
A small movement of his jaw.
Then Daniel ended the call.
“What?”
Claire sounded afraid.
Daniel looked at her.
“Your father’s old office was searched this morning.”
Mara frowned.
“What office?”
“The one nobody knew about.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“You found it.”
Daniel looked at her.
“No.”
His voice was low.
“Someone else did.”
Mara felt the pattern forming.
Every answer opened another door.
Every door led somewhere darker.
“What was in the office?” she asked.
Daniel hesitated.
“Records.”
“What kind of records?”
“The kind your father died trying to protect.”
Nobody spoke.
The word hung there.
Died.
Not disappeared.
Not left.
Died.
Mara looked at Claire.
Her sister had used different words for years.
Gone.
Lost.
Taken.
Never once had she said dead.
“You knew,” Mara whispered.
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I knew there was a chance.”
“A chance?”
Mara stepped back.
“You let me believe he was somewhere out there.”
“I wanted that to be true.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“No.”
Claire wiped her face.
“It isn’t.”
The honesty did not fix anything.
But it made the room feel less like a courtroom and more like a family falling apart.
Downstairs, applause erupted.
Someone must have entered the ceremony area.
Guests were taking their seats.
The sound traveled upward through the floor.
A reminder that time had not stopped for them.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“You cannot marry him today.”
Claire stared at him.
“You don’t get to decide that.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“But you need to understand what happens if you do.”
“And what happens?”
Daniel looked at the phone in his hand.
“Thomas gains access to everything connected to you.”
Claire’s face changed.
“What does that mean?”
“It means your family records.”
Mara looked between them.
“Why would marrying her give him access?”
Daniel did not answer immediately.
That pause told Mara the answer was worse than she expected.
“Because of the foundation.”
Claire looked confused.
“What foundation?”
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn’s face went pale.
“The family foundation,” Mara said.
She remembered.
Barely.
A name on old paperwork.
A charity her father created before he disappeared.
May you like
She had never understood why it existed.
It was just another adult thing she ignored as a child.
