Chương 3

The golden lights above the banquet room continued glowing, creating a strange contrast between the beautiful surroundings and the painful reality unfolding beneath them.

Emma looked at Daniel.

“There are things you need to hear from me.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Then tell me.”

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“No.”

The single word carried a warning.

Emma looked at him.

“Why?”

Richard said nothing.

That silence answered more than words could.

Daniel noticed.

His expression changed from confusion to suspicion.

“You knew.”

Richard looked away.

“You don’t understand.”

Daniel laughed softly, but there was no humor in it.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

He looked around the room.

“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle and what I cannot know.”

Emma felt a deep sadness hearing those words.

Because he was right.

Too many people had made choices for him.

Too many people had protected their own fears by keeping him in the dark.

She stepped closer.

“I am sorry.”

Daniel looked at her.

“For what?”

“For not being brave enough sooner.”

The honesty in her voice affected everyone listening.

Richard’s expression became colder.

“You think an apology fixes everything?”

Emma faced him.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“But admitting the truth is where fixing things begins.”

Margaret gently squeezed Daniel’s shoulder.

“You deserve the whole story.”

Daniel looked at her.

“And I am going to hear it.”

Richard watched as the room slowly turned against the control he once held.

The guests were no longer waiting for him to reveal something.

They were waiting for Emma to speak.

For years, Richard had believed he owned the story.

Tonight, he realized he had only been hiding the first chapter.

Emma stood beneath the lights, surrounded by strangers and people from her past, knowing there was no way back to silence.

She looked at Daniel one more time.

Then she began to tell him everything.

The first words were difficult.

They carried years of pain.

But once they left her mouth, they could never be taken back.

The first thing Emma told Daniel was not a name, a date, or a shocking revelation.

It was an apology.

“I am sorry that you had to find out this way,” she said.

Her voice was quiet, but every person in the room could hear the pain behind it.

“I am sorry that your life was changed tonight because someone decided the truth should be a weapon instead of something shared with honesty.”

Daniel stared at her.

He wanted to be angry.

He wanted to walk away.

He wanted to reject every word before she even said it.

But something stopped him.

Maybe it was the sadness in her eyes.

Maybe it was the fact that she looked less like someone hiding something and more like someone who had been carrying something impossible for far too long.

Richard watched them carefully.

He was searching for the moment when Daniel would turn against Emma.

He was waiting for the anger he had expected.

But it never came.

Not immediately.

“Tell me everything,” Daniel said.

Emma nodded slowly.

She looked toward the large windows at the far end of the banquet room.

Beyond the glass, the night was dark and still.

The reflection of the guests appeared behind her, creating the feeling that the entire room was trapped inside this moment.

“Years ago, before you knew any of this, there were choices made for you,” she began.

“Choices made by people who thought they were protecting you.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Who?”

Emma looked at Richard.

The silence answered before she spoke.

“Richard was one of them.”

A wave of whispers moved through the guests.

Richard immediately shook his head.

“Be careful.”

Emma looked back at him.

“For years, that was what everyone told me.”

Her expression hardened.

“Be careful.

Stay quiet.

Do not ruin everything.”

Margaret listened closely.

She remembered pieces of the past, but not all of them.

She remembered Emma arriving years ago with fear in her eyes and questions she refused to answer.

She remembered Richard insisting that certain conversations should never happen.

At the time, she thought he was protecting the family.

Now she wondered if he had only been protecting himself.

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Is she lying?”

Richard did not answer immediately.

That hesitation was enough.

Daniel took a step backward.

The person he had trusted most in the room was suddenly the person he understood the least.

Richard finally spoke.

“You are hearing one side of the story.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Then tell me yours.”

Richard opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

For a man who always had an answer, the silence was unexpected.

Emma continued.

“When Daniel was younger, there were things he was not told because people were afraid of what would happen if he knew.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What things?”

Emma swallowed.

“The truth about where he came from.”

The room became completely silent.

Richard’s expression changed.

For the first time, his anger was replaced by fear.

“Emma.”

But she kept going.

“I spent years believing that staying quiet would protect him.”

Daniel’s breathing became heavier.

“Protect me from what?”

Emma looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“From being caught between people who loved you and people who wanted control.”

Richard stepped forward.

“That is not fair.”

Emma turned toward him.

“Fair?”

Her voice rose slightly.

“You want to talk about fair?”

The guests watched as years of pain finally broke through.

“You brought me into this room and humiliated me in front of everyone.”

Her hand touched the mark on her cheek.

“You wanted everyone to believe you were the one brave enough to reveal the truth.”

She shook her head.

“But you never wanted them to know why I was silent.”

Richard’s face tightened.

“You made your choices.”

“Yes,” Emma replied.

“I did.”

She looked at Daniel.

“And I have regretted some of them every day.”

Daniel looked overwhelmed.

The information was coming too quickly.

The room felt smaller.

The lights felt brighter.
