Chương 1

"The first sound that broke the elegant silence of the banquet room was not a scream but the sharp crack of a hand striking skin.

Every conversation vanished in an instant as dozens of guests turned toward the center of the room.

Emma had been standing beneath the warm golden lights, her cream-colored dress flowing softly against the dark polished floor, believing she had finally escaped the weight of the past.

She had spent years building a life where no one could see the fear hidden behind her careful smile.

But as she looked into Richard’s cold eyes, she realized the secret she had protected was no longer hers to carry alone.

Richard stood only a few feet away, his dark suit perfectly pressed, his expression unreadable except for the anger tightening his jaw.

At sixty years old, he had mastered the ability to control every room he entered.

People listened when he spoke.

People moved when he walked.

And tonight, everyone in the banquet hall felt the pressure of his silence before he even said a word.

Emma’s hands trembled at her sides.

She looked around at the familiar faces watching her, searching for someone who might understand, someone who might step forward.

Nobody moved.

The guests remained frozen near the large dining tables, their formal clothing and expensive jewelry suddenly feeling meaningless against the tension filling the room.

Richard reached forward and grabbed her arm.

Emma gasped as his fingers tightened around her wrist.

“Richard, stop,” she whispered, her voice barely carrying through the silence.

But he did not listen.

His eyes remained fixed on her face.

“You really thought you could hide this forever?” he said, his voice deep and filled with disappointment.

Emma’s breathing became uneven.

“What are you doing?” she asked, her voice shaking with disbelief.

For a moment, the entire room seemed to hold its breath.

Then Richard pulled his arm back.

The movement was sudden enough that several guests stepped away in fear.

Emma’s eyes widened as she realized what was coming.

The slap landed across her cheek before she could react.

The sound echoed between the walls of the luxurious banquet room.

Her head turned from the impact, her blonde hair sweeping across her face as her body stumbled backward.

The carpet softened her fall, but the shock remained.

For several seconds, she could not move.

Her hand slowly rose to cover the burning side of her face.

Her eyes filled with tears, not only from the pain but from the humiliation of having everyone witness the moment.

A red mark began forming on her cheek as she looked up at Richard.

The man she once trusted now looked like a stranger.

A quiet gasp traveled through the crowd.

An older woman near the fireplace covered her mouth with both hands.

Margaret had known Emma for years.

She had watched her grow from a nervous young woman into someone who fought desperately to create a better future.

Now she saw the fear in Emma’s eyes and immediately understood that something much deeper was happening.

Richard took a slow step forward.

His shoes tapped against the wooden floor.

Each sound felt louder than the last.

Emma remained on the ground, trying to steady her breathing.

She wanted to speak.

She wanted to defend herself.

But the words refused to come.

“You don’t get to pretend anymore,” Richard said.

His voice was controlled, almost calm, which made his anger feel even more dangerous.

“Everyone deserves to know the truth.”

The guests exchanged confused looks.

Nobody knew exactly what truth he was talking about.

Whispers began spreading around the room.

“What happened?”

“Why would he do that?”

“Who is that young man?”

Emma followed their eyes toward the far side of the banquet room.

Near the gift table covered with white and blue boxes, another figure had appeared.

A young man in formal clothing stood there, frozen under the attention of the entire room.

His expression was filled with fear and confusion.

Emma’s face changed the moment she saw him.

The color drained from her cheeks.

Richard noticed.

That was the reaction he had been waiting for.

“You recognize him,” Richard said quietly.

Emma looked away.

Her lips trembled.

“No,” she whispered.

But everyone heard the fear in her voice.

Margaret slowly moved away from the guests and walked toward the young man.

She noticed how pale he looked and how his hands shook as he tried to remain standing.

She lowered herself beside him and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.

“Are you okay?” she asked softly.

The young man looked at her but did not answer.

His eyes kept moving between Emma and Richard.

He looked like someone who had suddenly been pulled into a storm he never expected.

The entire banquet room had changed.

What was supposed to be a celebration had become a place where hidden emotions were finally breaking through.

The beautiful decorations, the expensive flowers, and the glowing lights no longer mattered.

Everyone was focused on the painful scene unfolding in front of them.

Emma slowly pushed herself up from the carpet.

Her legs felt weak, but she refused to stay down.

She adjusted her dress with shaking hands and looked directly at Richard.

For the first time that night, the fear in her eyes began turning into strength.

“You don’t know everything,” she said.

Her voice was quiet, but it carried farther than she expected.

Richard stared at her.

“You think you can still control this?”

Emma swallowed hard.

“I think you are afraid that people will hear my side.”

A few guests looked surprised.

They had expected Emma to remain silent.

They had expected her to accept the accusation without fighting back.

But something inside her had changed.

The years of hiding had taken enough from her.

Richard’s expression hardened.

He stepped closer.

“This ends tonight.”

The words fell heavily over the room.

The music playing softly in the background stopped completely.

The only sounds left were breathing, footsteps, and the distant movement of people who did not know whether to stay or leave.
