Chương 7

Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.
"The child your mother lost was not gone."
Emily froze.
"She was hidden."
A terrible realization moved through her.
The same word.
The same pattern.
Hidden.
Her family had been built on secrets.
And every secret had taken someone away.
Emily looked at the photograph again.
"Who was the child?"
Daniel looked at her.
His silence was an answer before his words came.
"The child was your sister."
"The child was your sister."
Emily stared at Daniel.
The words refused to settle in her mind.
Her sister.
A person she never knew existed.
A person who had been hidden from her entire life.
She looked down at the photograph again.
The baby in her mother's arms looked peaceful.
Unaware that her entire existence would become a secret.
"How?" Emily whispered.
Daniel looked at the old papers spread across the desk.
"Your mother was young when it happened."
Emily shook her head slowly.
"My mother never told me she had another child."
"Because she was afraid."
Emily looked at him.
"Afraid of what?"
Daniel's expression became heavier.
"Afraid of losing everything."
Margaret sat down in the corner of the room.
Her hands trembled.
"I should have told you years ago."
Emily turned toward her.
"Yes."
The simple answer hurt more than anger.
Margaret lowered her eyes.
"I thought keeping the truth hidden would protect you."
Emily looked around the room.
A room full of hidden truths.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
Her voice cracked.
"But nobody ever asks what it does to the people who are left behind."
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody had an answer.
Emily walked toward the photograph.
She touched the edge carefully.
"Who was she?"
Daniel looked at the picture.
"Her name was Claire."
Emily repeated the name silently.
Claire.
A name that had never existed in her memories.
A name that somehow belonged to her family.
"What happened to her?"
Daniel took a slow breath.
"Your mother gave her away."
Emily felt a sudden sadness.
Not just for herself.
For the baby who never got to know her family.
"Why?"
Margaret answered this time.
"Because your mother believed she had no other choice."
Emily looked at her.
"That is not an answer."
Margaret nodded.
"You are right."
She looked at the photograph.
"Your mother became involved with dangerous people after Claire was born."
Emily frowned.
"What people?"
"The same people your father was investigating years later."
The pieces began connecting.
Lily.
The records.
The missing documents.
The threats.
The lies.
Everything seemed to lead back to the same hidden world.
Emily looked at Daniel.
"So Lily was connected because of Claire?"
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
"How?"
Daniel pointed to the documents.
"Your mother spent years trying to erase Claire's existence."
Emily looked confused.
"But why would Lily matter?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Because Claire had a daughter."
Emily froze.
The room became silent.
She already knew.
She did not want to believe it.
But she knew.
"Claire had a child?"
Daniel nodded.
"And that child was Lily's biological mother."
Emily stepped back.
The truth felt too large.
Lily was not only connected to her.
She was connected to the sister she never knew.
A family member who had been erased before Emily even had the chance to know her.
"So Lily..."
Daniel finished the sentence.
"Lily is your niece."
Emily covered her mouth.
The emotions came all at once.
Shock.
Confusion.
Love.
Grief.
She thought she had spent ten years searching for her daughter.
But she had been searching for a piece of a family that had been broken long before she understood it was broken.
A quiet sound came from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
Lily was standing there.
Emily's heart dropped.
She had heard.
The little girl's eyes were filled with confusion.
"What is a niece?"
Emily immediately walked toward her.
"Lily."
The girl looked up.
"Is my family bigger than I thought?"
Emily knelt down.
"Yes."
Lily looked toward the photograph.
"Is that my family?"
Emily did not know how to explain years of secrets to a child.
So she chose the simplest truth.
"Yes."
Lily looked at the picture.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"
Emily felt tears in her eyes.
Because that was the same question she had been asking her entire life.
"I don't know."
Lily looked down.
"Nobody tells the truth."
The sentence was quiet.
But it carried years of pain.
Emily pulled her into a gentle hug.
This time, Lily did not hesitate.
She held onto Emily tightly.
For the first time, Emily felt like she was truly holding her daughter.
Not a memory.
Not a dream.
Her child.
Daniel watched them silently.
Emily eventually looked at him.
"You knew all of this."
Daniel nodded.
"Not everything."
"But enough."
"Yes."
Emily stood.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Daniel looked away.
"Because your father asked me not to."
Emily's expression hardened.
"My father is dead."
"I know."
"So why are you still protecting his secrets?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Because before he died, he made me promise one thing."
Emily waited.
"He told me if I ever found you again, I had to make sure Lily was safe first."
Emily looked at Lily.
The little girl was holding onto her sweater.
"What happened to my father?"
Daniel's face changed.
"He was killed."
Emily became still.
She had always believed her father died in an accident.
Everyone told her that.
"What are you saying?"
Daniel looked at Margaret.
Margaret closed her eyes.
"He was not supposed to die that night."
Emily felt cold.
"Someone killed him?"
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
The house suddenly felt different.
Not like a place hiding old memories.
Like a place hiding danger.
"Who?"
Daniel looked toward the window.
"I do not know."
Emily stared at him.
"Another secret."
"I know."
"Another person making choices for me."
"I know."
Daniel's voice became quiet.
"But this time, I am telling you everything."
May you like
Emily wanted to believe him.
But trust was something she could not give away anymore.
