Chương 4

Friends.

Family.

People who knew about Lily.

People who knew about the pregnancy.

People who knew everything.

A cold feeling moved through her.

She turned another page.

The next letter was shorter.

I made a decision I regret every day.

I took Lily somewhere safe.

I changed her name.

I kept her hidden.

But I never stopped loving my daughter.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

The words hurt because they sounded like the truth.

Her father had made an unforgivable choice.

But maybe it came from fear.

Maybe it came from love.

Maybe both things could exist at the same time.

Lily looked at the papers.

"Is that about me?"

Emily immediately folded the letter slightly.

She did not want Lily to carry the weight of adult mistakes.

"Yes."

The girl looked nervous.

"Did he hate me?"

Emily's heart broke.

"No."

She knelt down.

"He was scared."

Lily looked at her.

"People always say they are scared when they leave."

Emily felt the pain behind those words.

She reached out and held Lily's hands.

"But I am here now."

Lily stared at her.

"You promise?"

Emily nodded.

"I promise."

For a moment, the room became quiet.

A child who had spent years waiting finally allowed herself to believe.

Margaret watched them with tears in her eyes.

Then Emily noticed something on the desk.

A small envelope hidden beneath the papers.

Unlike the others, this one had no name.

Only four words written on the front.

For Emily, when she knows.

Emily picked it up.

Margaret's face changed.

"What is it?"

Margaret looked frightened.

"You should not open that."

Emily stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because I don't know what is inside."

Emily looked at the envelope.

"If my father wanted me to have it, I am opening it."

She carefully broke the seal.

Inside was a single photograph.

Emily pulled it out.

Her body went completely still.

It was a picture of her father standing outside a house.

But he was not alone.

Standing beside him was another person.

Someone Emily recognized immediately.

Her face turned pale.

"No."

Margaret stepped closer.

"What?"

Emily held up the photograph.

The person beside her father was Daniel Reed.

Her former fiancé.

The man who had comforted her after Lily disappeared.

The man who told her he understood her pain.

The man who helped her search for answers.

The man who always said he wanted to help her rebuild her life.

Emily stared at the photograph.

The date was written on the back.

Three days after Lily disappeared.

Her hands began to shake.

"Daniel knew."

Margaret looked confused.

"Knew what?"

Emily looked at the picture.

"He knew where Lily was."

The realization hit harder than any secret before.

Daniel had not been searching with her.

He had been hiding something from her.

Every conversation.

Every moment he held her while she cried.

Every time he promised they would find the truth.

Maybe he had known the truth all along.

Lily noticed Emily's expression.

"Who is that man?"

Emily looked at her.

She wanted to protect her.

But she could not protect her by hiding the truth.

"Someone I trusted."

Margaret stepped toward the desk.

"There is more."

Emily looked at her.

"What?"

Margaret pointed to another folder.

"Your father kept records of every person connected to Lily's disappearance."

Emily opened it.

Inside were names.

Dates.

Meetings.

Photographs.

And one name appeared again and again.

Daniel Reed.

Emily felt the room spinning.

"Why would he do this?"

Margaret looked at the evidence.

"Maybe because he wanted Lily."

Emily looked up sharply.

"No."

The answer came immediately.

Because a part of her still remembered Daniel as the person who held her hand through her darkest moments.

But another part of her knew something had been wrong.

Something she refused to see.

Emily looked down at Lily.

The little girl was watching her with frightened eyes.

She had already lost so much.

Emily could not let another person take away her sense of safety.

She closed the folder.

"We are leaving."

Margaret looked surprised.

"You cannot leave yet."

Emily stared at her.

"Why?"

Margaret walked toward the window.

"Because if Daniel knows Lily has been found, he will come."

A sudden sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Everyone froze.

Lily grabbed Emily's hand.

Margaret's face lost all color.

Emily slowly turned toward the window.

Through the glass, a figure stood near the front yard.

A man.

Watching the house.

Watching them.

Emily recognized him instantly.

Daniel Reed.

After ten years of searching for answers, the person who had been hiding them was finally standing right outside.

Emily recognized him instantly.

Daniel Reed.

After ten years of searching for answers, the person who had been hiding them was finally standing right outside.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The house seemed to hold its breath.

Lily pressed closer to Emily, sensing the sudden change in the room.

"Is he the bad man?" Lily whispered.

Emily looked down at her.

She wanted to answer quickly.

She wanted to say yes.

She wanted to give Lily a simple explanation where good people were good and bad people were easy to recognize.

But life had never been that simple.

"I don't know," Emily said softly.

Daniel's shadow moved across the window.

He was walking toward the front door.

Margaret immediately stepped back.

Her face showed fear.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Emily noticed.

"You knew he might come."

Margaret looked at the floor.

"Your father always said Daniel would eventually find out."

Emily felt anger rising again.

"Then why didn't anyone warn me?"

Margaret looked at her.

"Because nobody knew who could be trusted."

The sound of footsteps approached the porch.

Emily stood between Lily and the door.

Her body moved before her mind could think.

Protecting Lily was no longer a choice.

It was instinct.

The door handle moved.

A second later, three slow knocks echoed through the house.

Daniel's voice came from outside.

"Emily."

May you like

Her entire body became tense.

His voice was exactly the same.
