Chương 2

“You knew this day would come.”
The door opened.
A female police officer stepped inside.
Her dark hair was tied back neatly, and her expression was serious as she looked around the room.
She saw Ethan.
She saw Claire.
She saw Margaret.
The pieces began connecting in her mind.
“What happened here?” the officer asked.
Nobody answered immediately.
The truth was finally standing in front of everyone.
The officer slowly moved closer.
Her eyes remained focused on Ethan.
“This changes everything.”
Ethan looked around the room.
For the first time in his life, he had nowhere left to escape.
The locked door he had feared for years was no longer hiding a secret.
It was revealing one.
And everyone was finally ready to hear it.
Ethan looked at the officer standing in front of him and realized that the years of carefully constructed lies around him were beginning to collapse.
The room that once protected his secrets now felt like a cage.
The young woman he had tried to forget was standing only a few feet away, carrying every unanswered question he had buried.
The officer slowly lowered her hand from her radio and studied the faces around her.
“I need everyone to stay where they are,” she said.
Her voice was calm, but her eyes showed that she understood something serious had happened.
Margaret nodded quietly.
She had not called the police because she wanted revenge.
She had called because the truth needed witnesses.
Ethan looked at her with disbelief.
“You planned this.”
Margaret held his gaze.
“No, Ethan.”
“I waited for this.”
The difference between those two sentences frightened him more than any accusation.
Claire stood near the wall, holding her arms around herself as if trying to protect herself from memories she had spent years escaping.
The officer noticed her fear immediately.
“Are you Claire Hale?” she asked.
The young woman hesitated.
Then she slowly nodded.
“Yes.”
The officer looked down at the information on her phone.
“We received a report connected to this location.”
Claire looked toward Margaret.
Margaret gave a small nod.
“It is time.”
Ethan shook his head.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
The officer turned toward him.
“Then explain it.”
For the first time, Ethan had no immediate answer.
He had always been able to control conversations.
He knew how to change the subject, create doubt, and make people question their own memories.
But tonight, every person in the room knew too much.
“You’re all making a mistake,” Ethan finally said.
His voice was lower now.
Less confident.
Claire stared at him.
“You said that the night you left me.”
The words froze him.
Margaret looked at Claire with sadness.
She knew this was the moment Claire had carried inside for years.
“You remember everything,” Ethan whispered.
Claire swallowed.
“I remember enough.”
The rain continued pounding against the roof.
Each drop sounded like a countdown.
Ethan stepped closer, but the officer immediately raised her hand.
“Stay back.”
He stopped.
The command was simple.
But it was something he had not heard in a long time.
A command he could not ignore.
Claire looked at the floor.
“I was seventeen when it happened.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Even after all these years, hearing those words still hurt.
“I trusted him,” Claire continued.
“I thought he was helping me.”
Ethan looked away.
“You don’t know the whole story.”
Claire’s eyes filled with anger.
“Then tell it.”
Silence filled the room.
The officer watched him carefully.
“Now is the time to explain.”
Ethan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because every explanation required admitting the first lie.
And every lie after that had been built on the one before it.
Margaret stepped forward.
“He promised her he would protect her.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Stop.”
“He promised her she would be safe.”
“Stop.”
“He told her nobody would ever find out.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
The officer noticed.
The reaction was not anger.
It was recognition.
“You knew about this,” the officer said.
Ethan looked at her.
“I knew what happened.”
The words came out before he could stop them.
Everyone became silent.
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
Claire looked like the air had been taken from the room.
The officer slowly reached for her notebook.
“Keep talking.”
Ethan realized his mistake.
His face tightened.
“I meant I knew there were rumors.”
Margaret let out a painful laugh.
“Still doing it.”
Ethan looked at Claire.
“You don’t know what I was trying to do.”
Claire wiped away a tear.
“I know what you did.”
“You disappeared.”
“I was scared.”
“You left me alone.”
“I thought I was protecting you.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
The words hit him harder than the slap.
Because they were true.
The officer looked between them.
“Claire, can you tell me what happened that night?”
Claire hesitated.
Her breathing became uneven.
Margaret moved beside her.
“You do not have to force yourself.”
Claire looked at her.
“I have spent years being afraid of that night.”
She turned back to Ethan.
“But I am more afraid of letting him keep the story.”
The room became completely quiet.
Claire slowly began speaking.
“It started with a phone call.”
Ethan’s eyes changed.
He knew exactly which call she meant.
“My mother was missing,” Claire said.
“She had been searching for answers about something she discovered.”
Margaret looked down.
“She found documents.”
The officer looked at her.
“What documents?”
Margaret took a deep breath.
“Records that proved Ethan had been hiding information about our family.”
Ethan immediately interrupted.
“That is not what happened.”
The officer looked at him.
“Then what happened?”
He had no answer.
Claire continued.
“My mother confronted him.”
“She told him she knew the truth.”
Ethan’s hands tightened.
The officer noticed.
“What truth?”
Claire looked directly at Ethan.
“The truth that he had been lying about my identity.”
The room seemed to stop.
May you like
Margaret closed her eyes.
Even though she knew the truth, hearing it spoken aloud still carried weight.
