Chương 1

""The rain had been falling for hours, turning the abandoned yard behind the old wooden storage building into a field of mud, broken branches, and forgotten memories.
Ethan Cole stood beneath the gray sky with water dripping from his dark hair, his expensive suit soaked and ruined, his hands shaking as he stared at the woman blocking his path.
He had spent years believing he was untouchable.
He believed every secret could be buried, every mistake could disappear, and every person could eventually be convinced to stay silent.
But Margaret Hale was standing in front of him with the kind of anger that only came from years of pain.
Her gray hair moved in the cold wind as she stepped closer, her eyes locked onto his face.
“You really thought you could walk away from this forever?” she said.
Ethan clenched his jaw and looked around the empty yard.
The old building behind them had always been a place nobody questioned.
It sat far from the main road, hidden behind a tall fence and surrounded by trees that blocked anyone from seeing inside.
For years, Ethan had avoided coming near it.
Tonight, he had no choice.
“Margaret, I don’t know what you think you found, but you need to stop,” Ethan said.
His voice sounded controlled, but the fear underneath it was impossible to hide.
Margaret’s expression hardened.
She had waited too long for this moment.
“You still lie the same way you did back then,” she whispered.
Ethan took a step forward.
“Move.”
Margaret did not move.
Instead, she looked at him with tears gathering in her eyes.
“You took everything from my family.”
The words hit him harder than he expected.
For a second, his confidence disappeared.
Then anger replaced it.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Margaret’s hand moved before Ethan could react.
The sound of the slap cut through the rain.
Ethan’s head turned sharply from the impact.
He stumbled backward, his shoes sliding against the wet ground.
A burning pain spread across his cheek.
His hand slowly rose to touch the mark forming on his skin.
His eyes widened.
Not because of the pain.
Because he could not believe someone had finally dared to stand against him.
“You can’t run from what you did anymore,” Margaret said.
Her voice trembled, but she refused to look away.
Ethan stared at her in disbelief.
“What are you talking about?”
Margaret stepped closer.
“The truth has been locked away long enough.”
The old wooden door behind Ethan suddenly seemed different.
For years it had been nothing more than a forgotten entrance.
Now it felt like a warning.
Ethan turned toward it.
A dark metal lock hung across the door, covered with rust from years of rain and neglect.
His breathing became heavier.
“Who is in there?” he asked.
Nobody answered.
The silence was worse than any accusation.
Ethan walked toward the door.
Every step sounded louder against the wet ground.
Margaret watched him carefully.
She knew what waited beyond that door.
She knew the moment he saw the truth, his entire world would collapse.
Ethan reached for the lock.
His fingers touched the cold metal.
For a brief moment, he hesitated.
Then he pulled.
The lock gave way.
The wooden door opened with a long, painful creak.
Inside was darkness.
The smell of old wood and dust escaped into the cold night air.
Ethan stood at the entrance, staring into the room.
“Who is here?” he demanded.
His voice echoed through the building.
Then he saw her.
A young woman sat in the corner of the room, partially hidden by the shadows.
She looked exhausted.
Her blonde hair was messy.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes widened the moment she recognized him.
Ethan froze.
The world around him seemed to disappear.
The young woman slowly stood.
Fear controlled every movement.
She looked like someone who had spent too long waiting for a moment she never wanted to experience.
“You were never supposed to see me,” she said softly.
Ethan stared at her.
He searched her face for an explanation.
For a reason.
For anything that could make sense.
But instead, he found a familiar expression.
A look he had seen before.
A look connected to a past he had tried to erase.
“No,” Ethan whispered.
Margaret entered the room behind him.
Her footsteps were slow and deliberate.
“You recognize her,” she said.
Ethan turned around.
His anger returned.
“This is another one of your games.”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“This is the truth.”
The young woman stepped forward.
“My name is Claire.”
Ethan looked at her.
He had heard that name before.
A memory he had buried began forcing its way back into his mind.
A night years ago.
A promise he had broken.
A choice he had made that changed other people’s lives forever.
“No,” he said again.
Claire’s eyes filled with pain.
“You knew someone was looking for me.”
Ethan remained silent.
“You knew what happened,” she continued.
The room felt smaller with every word.
Margaret watched his face carefully.
She had spent years wondering if he would ever admit what he had done.
Now she saw the answer.
He was afraid.
“You left her there,” Margaret said.
Ethan looked away.
“I did what I had to do.”
Claire’s expression changed.
The fear in her eyes became disappointment.
“You still believe that?”
Ethan stepped closer.
“You don’t understand.”
Claire moved backward.
Margaret immediately stepped between them.
“Don’t go near her.”
The tension exploded.
Ethan’s fists tightened.
“I am trying to fix this.”
Margaret laughed bitterly.
“Fix this?”
Her voice echoed through the wooden room.
“You destroyed lives and called it fixing.”
Ethan reached toward the door frame, trying to steady himself.
The rain outside became louder.
Then a sound came from outside.
A vehicle approaching.
Everyone stopped.
Blue lights reflected through the cracks in the old wooden walls.
Ethan looked toward the entrance.
May you like
Fear crossed his face.
Margaret did not look surprised.
